The D-Link AirPlus DWL-700AP Wireless Access Point is an 802.1x wireless access point. With a second level of security that is not offered with other conventional 802.11b standard-compatible Access Points, the DWL-
700AP ensures a more secure wireless network than ever before. In addition to WEP encryption, the DWL-700AP offers an Authentication capability when used with 802.1x compatible devices. This extra layer of protection will ensure a safer and more secure wireless network than has previously been available. Like most 802.11b Access Points, the DWL-700AP is capable of data transfer speeds of up to 11 Mbps when used with other D-Link AirPlus products such as the DWL-650 Wireless Cardbus Adapter. After completing the steps outlined in the Quick Installation Guide (included in your package) you will have the ability to share information and resources, such as files and printers, and enjoy the freedom that wireless networking delivers. You will be able to enjoy the freedom that wireless networking delivers. A wireless local area network (WLAN) is a cellular computer network that transmits and receives data with radio signals instead of wires. Wireless LANs are used increasingly in both home and office environments, and public areas such as airports, coffee shops and universities. Innovative ways to utilize WLAN technology are helping people to work and communicate more efficiently. Increased mobility and the absence of cabling and other fixed infrastructure have proven to be beneficial for many users. Wireless users can use the same applications they use on a wired network. Wireless adapter cards used on laptop and desktop systems support the same protocols as Ethernet adapter cards. Under many circumstances, it may be desirable for mobile network devices to link to a conventional Ethernet LAN in order to use servers, printers or an Internet connection supplied through the wired LAN. A Wireless Access Point (AP) is a device used to provide this link. People use wireless LAN technology for many different purposes:
Mobility - Productivity increases when people have access to data in any location within the operating range of the WLAN. Management decisions based on real-time information can significantly improve worker efficiency. Low Implementation Costs WLANs (Wireless Local Area Networks) are easy to set up, manage, change and relocate. Networks that frequently change, both physically and logically, can benefit from WLANs ease of implementation. WLANs can operate in locations where installation of wiring may be impractical. Installation Speed and Simplicity - Installing a wireless LAN system can be fast and easy and can eliminate the need to pull cable through walls and ceilings. 6 Wireless Basics Network Expansion - Wireless technology allows the network to go where wires cannot go. Reduced Cost-of-Ownership - While the initial investment required for wireless LAN hardware might be higher than the cost of wired LAN hardware, overall installation expenses and life-cycle costs will be significantly lower. Long-term cost benefits are greatest in dynamic environments requiring frequent moves, adds, and changes. Scalability Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) can be configured in a variety of topologies to meet the needs of specific applications and installations. Configurations are easily changed and range from peer-to-peer networks suitable for a small number of users to full infrastructure networks of thousands of users that allow roaming over a broad area. (DWL-650) 2.4GHz Wireless PCI cards used with desktop computers (DWL-520) 2.4GHz Wireless Access Points (DWL-700AP) 2.4GHz Wireless Broadband Router (DI-604) Standards - Based Technology The IEEE standard-based technology assures that the D-Link AirPlus Products are interoperable with existing compatible 2.4GHz wireless technology. This means you will be able to transfer large files quickly or even watch a movie in MPEG format over your network without noticeable delays. The technology works by using multiple frequencies in the 2.4GHz range at speeds up to 11 Mbps. D-Link AirPlus products will automatically sense the best possible connection speed to ensure optimal network performance. The DWL-700AP Wireless Access Point is 802.1x compatible. The 802.1x standard solves the problem of ensuring the safety of wireless networks by allowing for an additional layer of security. With two levels of 7 security, Authentication and Data Encryption, the 802.1x wireless network is more impervious to intruders than has previously been possible. The Authentication protocol in 802.1x provides the frontline of defense against network intrusion. EAP (Extensible Authentication Protocol) is the protocol used for authentication. Windows XP allows you to select the type of EAP you wish to use. All the clients, access points, and severs must share the same type of EAP in order to communicate and ensure that the network is secure. If you are not using Windows XP, you can purchase EAP software to install for the wireless clients in your network. The second level of security in the 802.1x wireless network is WEP data encryption. Depending on the radius server deployed in your network, you can distribute the certificate automatically and change Encryption keys in the wireless network. This network feature will greatly reduce the amount of time needed to ensure secure networking by automatically changing WEP keys periodically, thus relieving administrators of the onerous task of manually changing keys on a multitude of workstations. Installation Considerations Designed to go up to 1,312 feet (400 meters) outdoors and up to 328 feet
(100 meters) indoors, D-Links AirPlus DWL-700AP lets you access your network using a wireless connection from virtually anywhere. Keep in mind, however, that the number, thickness and location of walls, ceilings or other objects that the wireless signals must pass through may limit the range. Typical ranges vary depending on the types of materials and background RF
(radio frequency) noise in your home or business. The key to maximizing wireless range is to follow these basic guidelines:
1. Keep the number of walls and ceilings between the wireless Access Point and your receiving device (e.g., the DWL-650) to a minimum -
Each wall or ceiling can reduce your D-Link AirPlus Wireless products range from 3-90 feet (1-30 meters.) Position your Access Points, Residential Gateways, and computers so that the number of walls or ceilings is minimized. 2. Be aware of the direct line between Access Points, Residential Gateways (routers) and computers. A wall that is 1.5 feet thick (.5 meters), at a 45-degree angle appears to be almost 3 feet (1 meter) thick. At a 2-degree angle it looks over 42 feet (14 meters) thick! Try to make 8 sure that the Access Points and adapters are positioned so that the signal will travel straight through a wall or ceiling for better reception. 3. Building Materials make a difference - A solid metal door or aluminum studs may have a negative effect on range. Try to position Access Points, and computers with wireless adapters so that the signal passes through drywall or open doorways and not other materials. 4. Make sure that the devices antenna is positioned for best reception by using the software signal strength tools included with your product. 5. Keep your product away (at least 3-6 feet or 1-2 meters) from electrical devices or appliances that may generate extreme RF noise. For the average home, signal range should not be an issue. If you experience low or no signal strength in areas of your home that you wish to access, consider positioning the Access Point in a location directly between the computers with wireless adapters. Additional Access Points can be connected to provide better coverage in rooms where the signal does not appear as strong as desired. 9 4. Getting Started Right out of the box, with its default settings, the DWL-700AP will automatically connect with other D-Link Air or AirPlus products. For the price of a single IP Address from your Broadband Internet Service provider you can share the Internet with all the computers on your local network, without sacrificing speed or security, using D-Link AirPlus networking products. If you need to assign IP Addresses to the computers on the IP Address for each network, please remember computer must be in the same IP Address range as all the computers in the network, and the Subnet mask must be exactly the same for all the computers in the network. For example: If the first computer is assigned an IP Address of 192.168.0.2 with a Subnet Mask of 255.255.255.0, then the second computer can be assigned an IP Address of 192.168.0.3 with a Subnet Mask of 255.255.255.0, etc. IMPORTANT: If computers or other devices are assigned the same IP Address, one or more of the devices may not be visible on the network. An Infrastructure network contains an Access Point. The Infrastructure Network example shown on the next page contains the following D-Link network devices:

After an RMA number is issued, the defective product must be packaged securely in the original or other suitable shipping package to ensure that it will not be damaged in transit, and the RMA number must be prominently marked on the outside of the package. Using the Configuration Utility- learn the settings you must use on each computer in your network for successful communication. Troubleshooting- learn how to check for the network adapters drivers and other tips for troubleshooting the network. installation of the proper 700AP Please remember that D-Link AirPlus wireless devices are pre-configured to connect together, right out of the box, with the default settings. You will need a broadband Internet access (Cable/DSL) subscription. Consult with your Cable/DSL provider for proper installation of the modem. Connect the modem to an Ethernet Broadband Router (such as the D-Link DI-604) See the Quick Installation Guide included with the DI-604. Connect the router to the D-Link AirPlus DWL-700AP. Refer to the Quick Installation Guide for setting up the DWL-700AP. If you are connecting a desktop computer in your network, you can install the D-Link AirPlus DWL-520+ wireless PCI adapter into an available PCI slot. See the Quick Installation Guide included with the DWL-520+. Install the drivers for the wireless cardbus adapter (D-Link AirPlus DWL-650+) into the laptop computer. See the Quick Installation Guide included with the DWL-650+ for installation instructions. 11 Getting Started Setting Up an 802.1x Network 700AP 700AP Here is a sample of a network setup using the 802.1x compliant DWL-700AP access point.Your network may look different. For successful communication, you will need 802.1x compliant devices, including 802.1x compliant wireless network adapters. If you are using two or more access points in conjunction for load-balancing or backup, please remember to keep the ethernet cable connection between the access points. An ethernet connection is needed so that IAPP (Inter Access Point Protocol) can be used to enable these functions. Please read through the configuration section of this manual to learn about the settings you will need for your devices to achieve a faster, safer and more effective wireless net-
work than you have previously experienced. 12 5. Using the Configuration Menu The Configuration Menu for the DWL-700AP is web-based. When using the configuration program, please consider the following:
You will need a JavaScript-enabled web-browser such as Internet Explorer 4.0 or higher, or Netscape Navigator 4.0 or higher. The computer that you are using for initial configuration must have an IP Address within the same range as the IP Address of the DWL-700AP. The DWL-700AP has a default IP Address of 192.168.0.50 with subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 If you are using a D-Link router in your network, such as the DI-604, with the factory default settings, you will not need to assign a static IP Address to the computer that you are using to configure the Access Point. (Skip to Fig. 5.1:
entering the IP address) If you are not using a D-Link router in your network, you will need to assign a Static IP Address to the computer that you are using to configure the DWL-
700AP, with in the IP Address Range of the DWL-900AP+. Assign a static IP address of 192.168.0.2 with subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 (Please see Networking Basics in this manual for information on Assigning a Static IP Address.) Note: Please write down the current IP address settings of the computer. You may need to revert back to these settings after configuring the DWL-900AP+. After you have assigned a Static IP Address to the computer you are using for configuration (if necessary), next you will assign the DWL-7000AP an IP Address within the range of your existing network. After changing the IP Address of the DWL-700AP you will need to enter the IP into the address bar of your web browser to access the configuration page of the DWL-700AP If the computer had a static IP address, re-input that same address. If the computer had a dynamic IP Address (i.e., a DHCP capable router automatically assigns the IP Address) then change the setting of your network adapter to receive a Dynamic IP Address. The DWL-700APs default IP Address is shown below:

(The IP Address shown in the example above is the default setting. Use this IP address when connecting to a network consisting of other D-Link devices set to their default settings. If you have changed the IP Address of the DWL-700AP to conform to a network other than one with D-Link devices, then input that IP Address in the web browser, instead of the default IP Address shown.) AP name SSID Channel WEP Encryption Key Type Fig. 5.3 14 Using the Configuration Menu (continued) AP Name: You may choose to rename your Access Point, especially if you have more than one Access Point on your network. SSID: (Service Set Identifier) default is the default setting. The SSID is a unique name that identifies a network. All devices on a network must share the same SSID name in order to communicate on the network. If you choose to change the SSID from the default setting, input your new SSID name in this field. The SSID can be up to 32 characters in length. Channel: Channel 6 is the default channel. Input a new number if you want to change the default setting. All devices on the network must be set to the same channel to communicate on the network. WEP Encryption: Select Enable Encryption to use WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) on the network. All devices on the network, and the Access Point, must share the same WEP selection either Enable or Disable, and they must share the same WEP key. The WEP key is generated from ASCII or Hexadecimal entries that are either 64, 128, or 256 bit in length. When enabling encryption, select the Key Type (ASCII or Hexadecimal) and then input the appropriate digits or letters. You can create up to 4 keys. Select the key you wish to use. Click Help at any time for more information. Click Apply if you have made any changes or additions. This window displays the default settings of the DWL-700AP. The default IP Address is 192.168.0.50. If you select Dynamic IP Address, you will obtain a dynamic IP Address from a DHCP server on your network.
(This is not advisable since it will be difficult to determine the dynamic IP address assigned to the DWL-700AP.) The Subnet Mask is 255.255.255.0. Input the IP Address of the Gateway (the router on your network.) Click Apply if you have made any changes. Hexadecimal digits consist of the numbers 0-9 and the letters A-F ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) is a code for representing English letters as numbers from 0-127 Fig. 5.4 15

(Media Access Control Address) A unique hardware address that identifies a device on a network. It is assigned at the factory and cannot be changed. Usually you will find this address on a sticker on the device or on the packaging. Advanced > Mode Fig 5.5 The DWL-700AP can be configured to perform in any one of five modes, as a wireless access point, as a point-to-point bridge with another access point, as a point-to-multi-point bridge, as a wireless client, or as a wireless repeater. Access Point: This mode is used to create a wireless LAN. Access Point is the default setting. 16 Advanced > Mode > Site Survey Using the Configuration Menu (continued) Wireless Client: Will transform any IEEE 802.3 Ethernet device into an 802.11b wireless client as long you are connecting to a DWL-700AP acting as an Access Point. The Site Survey function will allow you to scan for available wireless networks. Wireless Bridge: This mode will allow you to connect two LANs together. The wireless bridge will only work with another DWL-
700AP. Note! If you use the DWL-700AP in Wireless Bridge Mode, make sure that you enter the Ethernet MAC Address of the remote DWL-700AP unit that you want to establish a wireless connection. Multi-point Bridge: This mode will allow you to connect multiple wireless LANs together. Other wireless LANs must be using DWL-700APs. 17

Beacons are packets sent by an Access Point to synchronize a wireless network. Specify a Beacon interval value. Default
(100) is recommended. RTS Threshold: This value should remain at its default setting of 2,432. If you encounter inconsistent data flow, only minor modifications to the value range between 256 and 2,432 are recommended. Fragmentation: This value should remain at its default setting of 2,346. If you experience a high packet error rate, you may slightly increase your Fragmentation Threshold within the value range of 256 to 2,346. Setting the Fragmentation Threshold too low may result in poor performance. DTIM Interval (Beacon Rate): (Delivery Traffic Indication Message) Enter a value between 1 and 16384 for the Delivery Traffic Indication Message (DTIM.) A DTIM is a countdown informing clients of the next window for listening to broadcast and multicast messages. Basic Rates: Select the basic rate for the network TX Rates: Select the transmission rate for the network Preamble Type: Long Preamble is the default setting. (High traffic networks should use the shorter preamble type.) The preamble defines the length of the CRC block

Disabled is the default selection for 802.1x protocol. Select Enabled to enable it. Encryption Key: Select the key length, either 64 bits or 128 bits. Lifetime: Select 5, 15, 30 minutes or 1 or 8 hours, or 1 day for the authentication period. After this period expires, members of the network will have to re-logon to gain access to the network. Radius Server 1 IP: Enter the IP Address of the Radius Server. Port: Enter the port number that your Radius Server uses for Authentication. The default setting of 1812 is the port setting for many Radius Servers. Shared Secret: Enter the Shared Secret. The shared secret must be the same as the shared secret on your radius server. Radius Server 2: Optional. The saved file can be loaded back on the DWL-700AP by clicking Browse. When you have selected the settings file, click Load. Click Restore to return to Factory Default Settings. 6. Using the AirPlus AP Manager The AirPlus Access Point Manger is a Windows based program to help you manage multiple Access Points in one easy view. Please note that the AP Manger software is optional. Begin the installation by inserting the DWL-700AP CD into your CD-
ROM. The AP Manager is also available for download at support.dlink.com. Click Install AirPlus AP Manager The following screen will appear. Click Next Click Next Click Finish to complete installation. 26 Using the AirPlus AP Manager (continued) Link Information The Link Information screen displays the current settings of the selected Access Point AP Settings The AP Settings screen will allow you to change the Access Point settings for the selected Access Point. 27 Using the AirPlus AP Manager (continued) IP Settings The IP Settings screen will allow you to change the IP Address settings for the selected Access Point. WEP Settings The WEP Settings Screen will allow you to apply WEP Encryption to the selected Access Point. WEP is short for Wired Equivalent Privacy. It is a security protocol for wireless local area networks. All devices on the wireless network must share the same WEP encryption settings in order to communicate. 28

Using the AirPlus AP Manager (continued) 802.1X Setting The default setting of 802.1x is disabled. Input the IP Address of the radius server and the Shared Secret to make the 802.1x function work properly. MAC Filter Setting The MAC Filter can allow or deny wireless connection to the DWL-
700AP. Select Allow or Deny and enter the MAC address of the selected computer into the field above. Firmware Upgrade The Firmware Upgrade screen will allow you to apply new version of the firmware to selected Access Point. 29 7. Troubleshooting This chapter provides solutions to problems that can occur during the installation and operation of the DWL-700AP Wireless Access Point. We cover various aspects of the network setup, including the network adapters. Please read the following if you are having problems. Note: It is recommended that you use an Ethernet connection to configure the DWL-700AP Access Point. 1. The computer used to configure the DWL-700AP cannot access the Configuration menu. Check that the Ethernet LED on the DWL-700AP is ON. If the LED is not ON, check that the cable for the Ethernet connection is securely inserted. Check that the Ethernet Adapter is working properly. Please see item 3 (Check that the drivers for the network adapters are installed properly) in this Troubleshooting section to check that the drivers are loaded properly. Check that the IP Address is in the same range and subnet as the DWL-700AP. Please see Checking the IP Address in Windows XP in the Networking Basics section of this manual. Note: The IP Address of the DWL-700AP is 192.168.0.50. All the computers on the network must have a unique IP Address in the same range, e.g., 192.168.0.x. Any computers that have identical IP Addresses will not be visible on the network. They must all have the same subnet mask, e.g., 255.255.255.0 Do a Ping test to make sure that the DWL-700AP is responding. Go to Start>Run>Type Command>Type ping 192.168.0.50. A successful ping will show four replies. 30 2929 Troubleshooting 2. The wireless client cannot access the Internet in the Infrastructure mode. Make sure the wireless client is associated and joined with the correct Access Point. To check this connection: Right-click on the Local Area Connection icon in the taskbar> select View Available Wireless Networks. The Connect to Wireless Network screen will appear. Please make sure you have selected the correct available network, as shown in the illustrations below. Note: Screen shot were taken using Windows XP. Your screens may look similar. Default Check that the IP Address assigned to the wireless adapter is within the same IP Address range as the access point and gateway. Since the DWL-700AP has an IP Address of 192.168.0.50, wireless adapters must have an IP Address in the same range, e.g., 192.168.0.x. Each device must have a unique IP Address; no two devices may have the same IP Address. The subnet mask must be the same for all the computers on the network.) To check the IP Address assigned to the wireless adapter, double-click on the Local Area Connection icon in the taskbar > select the Support tab and the IP Address will be displayed. (Please refer to Checking the IP Address in the Networking Basics section of this manual.) If it is necessary to assign a Static IP Address to the wireless adapter, please refer to the appropriate section in Networking Basics. If you are entering a DNS Server address you must also enter the Default Gateway Address. (Remember that if you have a DHCP-capable router, you will not need to assign a Static IP Address. See Networking Basics: Assigning a Static IP Address.) 31 Troubleshooting 3. Check that the drivers for the network adapters are installed properly. You may be using different network adapters than those illustrated here, but this procedure will remain the same, regardless of the type of network adapters you are using. Resetting the DWL-700AP to Factory Default Settings After you have tried other methods for troubleshooting your network, you may choose to Reset the DWL-700AP to the factory default settings. Remember that D-Link AirPlus products network together, out of the box, at the factory default settings. To hard-reset the D-Link AirPlus DWL-700AP to Factory Default Settings, please do the following:
Locate the Reset button on the back of the DWL-700AP Use a paper clip to press the Reset button. Hold for about 5 seconds and then release After the DWL-700AP reboots (this may take a few minutes) it will be reset to the factory Default settings. 34 8. Networking Basics Using the Network Setup Wizard in Windows XP In this section you will learn how to establish a network at home or work, using Microsoft Windows XP. Note: Please refer to websites such as http://www.homenethelp.com and http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000 for information about networking computers using Windows 2000, ME or 98. Go to Start>Control Panel>Network Connections Select Set up a home or small office network When this screen appears, Click Next. 35 Networking Basics (continued) Please follow all the instructions in this window:
Click Next In the following window, select the best description of your computer. If your computer connects to the Internet through a gateway/router, select the second option as shown. Click Next 36 Networking Basics (continued) Enter a Computer description and a Computer name (optional.) Click Next Enter a Workgroup name. All computers on your network should have the same Workgroup name. Click Next 37 Networking Basics (continued) Please wait while the Network Setup Wizard applies the changes. Whether you want to add a local printer (a printer connected directly to one computer,) share an LPR printer (a printer connected to a print server) or share a network printer (a printer connected to your network through a Gateway/Router,) use the Add Printer Wizard.
