uct. Read this safety instructions carefully before installing the computer. Installing the computer Do not operate your computer near water for example, in a bathroom. The computer may not function correctly, and there is a risk of electric shock. Operate the computer within a temperature range of 5 ~ 15 and 30 ~ 80% of relative humidity. Safely dispose of the packing materials, such as desiccant and plastic bags. Children may swallow desiccant or suffocate from plastic bags. Keep your computing environment clean and free of dust. There is a risk of dysfunction to the computer. Do not place any object within 15cm of the computer. The computer may overheat and result in fire or injuries. Keep your computer away from electromagnetic fields. Exposure to the electromagnetic field may result in loss of data in the hard disk drive and/or damage to the monitor. 2 Important Safety Instruntions Connecting to the power Do not use loose or damaged power plugs. There is a risk of electric shock or fire. Use a correct voltage outlet. There is a risk of fire or electric shock. Use properly grounded outlet. Connecting the computer to an outlet without proper grounding may result in electric shock and damages to your computer. Use your computer at the proper voltage/current level indicated. There is a risk of fire or electric shock. Do not touch or grab the power plug with wet hands. There is a risk of fire or electric shock. If you hear a noise from the power cord or outlet, unplug the power cord imme-
diately, and contact the customer service for help. There is a risk of fire or electric shock. Hold the plug body when removing the power cord from an outlet. There is a risk of fire and damages to the computer. Make sure the power plug fits snugly into the electrical outlet. Loose fit may result in fire. Keep near the power cable and power cord clean. There is a risk of fire. If an object or liquid enters the computer or an adaptor, remove power cord, battery, and any other cables from the computer, and contact the customer service for help. There is a risk of an electric shock, fire, or damage to the computer. Important Safety Instruntions 3 Use properly grounded outlet. Connecting the computer to an outlet without proper grounding may result in electric shock and damages to your computer. Use your computer at the proper voltage/current level indicated outlet. There is a risk of fire or electric shock. Do not bend or place a heavy object on top of the power cord. Keep the chil-
dren and pets from damaging the power cord. Damaged power cord may result in electric shock or fire. Using the computer For cleaning your computer, use mild detergent or computer cleaning products. Be sure to dry completely before using the computer. Using the computer without completely drying it may result in electric shock or fire. During a lightning storm, disconnect the power cord, telephone line, and LAN cable from the computer. There is a risk of electric shock or fire. Do not place water, chemicals, or liquid of any kind on the computer. Liquid of any kind entering inside the computer may result in an electric shock, fire, or dam-
age to the computer. Do not connect the modem directly to a multi-line telephone. There is a risk of fire or damage to the computer. If you drop your computer, remove the power cord and battery pack, and then contact the customer service for check. There is a risk of electric shock or fire. Do not expose your computer to the direct sunlight. The computer may overheat and result in fire or injuries. 4 Important Safety Instruntions Do not place a burning candle or cigarette on the computer. There is a risk of fire or damage to the computer. If you see or smell smoke from the computer or adaptor, turn off the computer, remove the power cord, and then contact the customer service for help. There is a risk of fire. Upon completion of any service or repairs, ask service technician to perform safety checks. Ignoring safety checks may result in electric shock or fire. Keep the computer away from heat. The computer may deform and there is the risk of fire. Turn on the external devices first and then in order of. There is a risk of damage to the computer. Turn off the external devices first and then in order of. There is a risk of damage to the computer. Use only the proper devices to the connector. There is a risk of damage to the computer. Do not use any damaged CD or floppy disk. There is a risk of damage to the computer or injuries. Use the Wireless LAN at least 5meters away from a microwave oven or plasma lamp. When using the Wireless LAN near a plasma lamp, use the channel 11, 12, or 13. The connection can be unavailable or slow. Do not press eject button while the CD-ROM or floppy drive is in use. Data can be lost and there is a risk of injuries. Place the memory card in a correct position when inserting it. There is a risk of damage to the memory. Do not drop the parts of computer. There is a risk of injuries or damage to the computer. Important Safety Instruntions 5 Carrying and storing the computer Before moving the computer, turn the power off and remove all the cables. You may trip over the loose cables and fall. Upgrading the computer Keep screws and other small parts away from children. Children may choke on a screw or other small part. If a child swallows a small part, receive a medical care. Do not disassemble the power supply devices. There is a risk of an electrical shock. Before disassembling the computer for upgraing purposes, turn off the power and remove the power cord, phone line and battery pack. There is the risk of electric shock or fire. If you need to open the computer cover, contact the Technical support for help. There is a risk of damage to the computer. 6 Important Safety Instruntions Preventing data loss (handling hard disk drives) Be cautious when handling the hard disk drive.
The hard disk drive is very delicate to any physical impact. Always make backups for your data

Exposure to a physical shock during the disassembling or installing process
The computer is reset (rebooted), for example by power outage, while the hard disk drive is operating.

Power button Turns the power on/off the computer.
Power/ Hard disk drive status indicator Indicates whether the computer is on and the hard disk drive is in use(blinking indicates the hard disk drive is in use). Note

Power AC Power Inlet Connects to the power cord for supplying power to your computer.
Keyboard connector Connects to a PS/2 keyboard.
Mouse connector Connects to a PS/2 mouse.
USB connectors Connect to USB devices or HUB. For example, you can connect to a USB mouse, digital camera, or external hard disk drive. Note

Video connector Connects to a monitor cable. Installing the system 13 1-3. Installing the computer Installing your computer may be easier than you think. Before the installation, be sure to turn off the computer and other peripheral devices. The mouse and keyboard con-
nectors look identical; therefore, check the icons above the connectors before attach-
ing the mouse and keyboard. Your computer may be installed with different expansion cards from the picture below. Some items may look different from the picture.
Note
For USB mouse users, USB connectors are located both the front and rear of the computer.
Do not place a glass or container with water, chemicals, or liquid of any kind in it on the computer. There is a risk of electric shock and/or damage to the computer. 14 Installing the system
Connecting a keyboard The keyboard cable has a round connector with 6 pins. and the key-
board connector on the real of the computer has 6 holes. Align the pins and holes, and attach the keyboard cable to the computer as shown in the picture.
Connecting a mouse The rectangular connector on the mouse cable fits into one of the USB connectors on the front and real of the computer.The round connector on the mouse cable fits into the PS/2 connector on the real of the computer. Be sure to align the 6 pins on the cable with the corresponding holes on the connector.
Connecting to power Attach the power cord to the computer and then plug the power cord into a wall socket.

For using the monitor, refer to the user manual that comes with the monitor. When using built-in video When installing video card
Connect the monitor cable to the video card. The monitor cable sends signal from the computer to monitor.
Connect the power cable to the monitor and plug it into an electrical outlet. The power cord supplies power from the electrical outlet to monitor. You must turn on and off the monitor with the power button on the monitor. To supply to supply power to the monitor, check the power specification of the monitor before attaching the power cord to the computer. Connecting a printer(customer purchased device) The printer cable and power cord are included with the printer. For using the printer, refer to the user manual that comes with the printer.
Connect the printer cable to the parallel connector on the computer.

trical outlet. Connecting a speaker(customer purchased device) Your computer does not have built-in speakers. You must attach an external speaker to out put sound.

Installing the system 17 2.Using the system 2-1.Turning on the computer Make sure if there is nothing in Floppy disk and see if the computer is well connected to the power cable and other external device drivers. You should complete registration process. Start registration process following the instruction after turning on the com-

Pressing the power switch starts the self-diagnostic procedures; then Windows(R) XP startup screen is displayed .In a moment, a dialogue box, saying "Welcome to Microsoft Windows" appears on the screen. Then Click [Next].
After "Help protect your PC" message appears on the screen, select "Help protect my PC by turning on Automatic Updates now" and then press [Next]. 18 Using the system
Internet connection option screen appears, follow the instruction.
If you turn the power on the computer for the first time, you have to register your copy of Windows XP. The registration process may differ depending on the model, but the difference does not affect the use of your computer.
"Who will use this computer?" message appears on the screen. Type the names of the users and click [Next]. Using the system 19

Background and title bar have been rearranged concisely, and it became easier to access the application programs from the start menu. Also, it allows users with more diverse options to choose from when decorating desktop's appearance. Overview Windows XP is an operating system that runs a computer. Learning the basics features in Windows is recommended to utilize a computer effectively.

Recycle Bin Click [Start] button to open the [Start] menu. Click [All Programs] to open the list of programs installed in the computer.
[Start menu] shows everything you need to start work-
ing in the Windows XP environment. Taskbar shows programs that are currently open and running. Taskbar icons show and let you configure ongoing activities such as display properties, LAN settings, etc. Put your unused items and files in the Recycle Bin. In Appearance tab, you can click [Advanced] button and change the color scheme, font size, and windows and button styles. In Themes tab, you can change the overall appearance of the desktop. 2. Select theme from the theme drop down menu. 3. Theme changes. 4. After making a selection, click [Apply]
and then click [Save as]. 5. Enter a theme name and press [OK]. Note
To open Display Properties, click [Start]
[Control pannels][Switch to classic view] and then double-click [Display]. If you do not save the theme, the name of the theme does not change. The new theme is saved in My docu ments folder. To open My document folder, click [Start] and select [My docu ments]. Taskbar Taskbar displays programs and files that are currently open. If there are many pro-
grams running on the computer, the Taskbar group together files from the same program to prevent taskbar icons from cluttering up the Taskbar. Desktop cleanup Desktop Cleanup Wizard removes unused desktop items to a folder. The Desktop Cleanup Wizard runs every 60 days but you can also run it manually. 1.Click [Start] - [Control Panel][Switch to Classic view][Display]. 2.Click [Desktop] tab. 3.Click [Customize Desktop][Clean Desktop Now] button. Using the system 27 2-3.Turning off the computer If the Drive in use indicator is on, do not turn off the computer, as doing so may damage the data being read from or written to the drive.
Quit all running applications; click [Start] and choose [Turn off computer] from the start up menu.
In the Turn off computer window, choose Turn off.
The computer is turned off automatically. If Windows does not shut down properly, press and hold the power switch for more than 5 seconds the system will shut down. Turning off the computer this way may damage the system. It is recommended that you always turn off the computer by choosing Shut down from the Start menu. If the computer does not shut down properly while running applications, the data in the hard disk drive may be damaged. If your computer does not respond while running applications, press the [Ctrl]+[Alt]+[Delete]
combination to start the Task Manager; then quit the program or restart the system. If Windows or program file is damaged by shutting down the system incorrectly, reinstall the program. The user is responsible for the loss of data caused by incorrect use of the computer. 28 Using the system 2-4. Restarting the computer You can restart the computer as the instructions bellow, when the computer does not function correctly or freeze out. 1. Quit the program or restart by pressing combination of [Ctrl]+[Alt]+[Delete] key. 2. If the problem still exists press the power switch for 5 seconds to turn off the comput-
er and then restart the computer. Note

To press down and release a left button on a mouse pointing device in order to select an item on a display screen or activate a command or function. What is double click?
Pressing the left button twice in rapid succession in order to activate a command or function represented graphically on a display screen. What is Pop-up menu?
When using Windows, clicking the right button on the mouse opens the pop-up menu. (Pop-up menu is to command a copy, send or open/close functions to support an application program.) What is drag?

To cause (displayed text or graphics) to move up, down, or across the screen so that a line of text or graphics appears at one edge of the screen for each line that moves off the opposite edge. Using the system 31 2-6.Cleaning the mouse If the mouse pointer does not move well, you need to clean up the ball inside the mouse. (The appearance of mouse may be different depending on models). Clean up the mouse with cotton swap and alcohol as follows.
Open up the cover in the direction of the arrow as shown on the picture and take out the ball.
See if inside of the mouse is filled with dust.
Clean with cotton swab and alcohol.
Close the cover in the direction of the arrow and use the mouse. 32 Using the system 2-7. Using Keyboard Keyboard is used for entering text and commands in the computer.
ESC key Used to command quit or cancel while appli-
cation program is running.
Function keys enable you to perform different opera-
tions depending on the operating system and application program you use.
F1 In many cases, it starts help menu from most application programs.

Modifier and special function keys Print Screen Press PrtSc key to take the snapshot image on the screen. Scroll Lock to move an entire image on the screen without moving a cursor. Pause/Break to stop movements for a specified time.
Direction keypad /
Numeric keypad direction keys mark the position at which a cursor can be moved. Numeric keys can be used as direction keys when NumLock indicator is on. Home home moves the cursor at the beginning of the sentence. End end moves the cursor at the end of the sentence. Page Up page up moves the cursor to the previ-
ous page. Page Down page downmoves the cursor to the next page.
Multimedia/Internet function keys Home aunches the Internet Explorer on your system. Search Internet Explorer or Windows Explorer must be launched to use this key to access to the search engine in the Iternet Explorer or search files in the Windows Explorer. E-mail launches the Outlook Express on your system. Using the system 33 Typewriter Keyboard The keyboard is used for entering text and command.
Tab key it moves a cursor to the next column. LG LG User EX User's name

Caps Lock key lock the keyboard in the upper case position.
Shift key hold Shift key down and press another key to enter the upper case letter.
, Clrt key or Alt key keys (shortcuts) are used in conjunction with Arlt key or Ctrl key to provide shortcuts for some of the predefined operations.
Backspace key moves a cursor to backward when deleting letters.
Enter key used at the end of each command to move on to the next line.
Space key make a blank or empty area: the spaces between words.
Windows key opnes up the start menu when using Windows operating system.
This key is used to view shortcuts for the current program (Shortcut menu key works the same as the right-clicking the mouse button)
This key is used in conjunction with [Fn] key to move on to the next or previous page. Spilling the water on the keyboard causes disfunction to the computer. 34 Using the system 2-8.Using the optical disk driver Different model types provide different optical disk drives.
(Some models have DVD-ROM drives and others have DVD/CD-RW COMBO/DVD
ROM COMBO drives.) Inserting a CD Turn on the computer, and press the eject button on the CD-ROM drive. Place the CD in the middle of the tray.

Sound driver installation starts. complete the processs by the instructions on the screen. 64 Reinstalling the driver 5-3.Reinstalling the video driver Video driver is came with your computer. But if the computer does not recognize the sound driver, you should re-install the sound driver.
Turn on the computer and the monitor.
Insert LG Giljabi CD into the CD-ROM drive, and then select the video driver.
Video driver installation starts. complete the process by the instructions on the screen. Reinstalling the driver 65 6. System Expansion 6-1. Opening the computer case Always consult with your service representatives before opening the computer case. Follow the guidelines below when opening the case.
Quit all running programs.
Turn off the computer and monitor, and unplug and remove the power cords.
Keep magnetic objects such as screw driver away from the parts inside the com-
puter.
Open the computer case in a safe, clean area.
The static electricity can damage the parts inside the computer. Touch a bare, unpainted metal part of the computer for 2~3 seconds to remove the static elec-
tricity before opening the computer case. Opening and closing the computer case Remove 3 screws from the cover and then push the cover as the direction of the arrow. Push the cover in the direction of arrow as it aligns the groove of com-
puter cover with body shown on the picture and fasten 3 screws.

Clamps on both sides of the CPU fasten the fan tightly to the CPU socket. raise the handle, release the clamps, and then spread them outward. Align the groove to the right position, pins can easily be broken.
After releasing the clamps, lift and remove the CPU fan from the socket.
Raise the handle on the CPU socket to unlock the CPU. 70 System Expansion
Lift the CPU straight up. Be careful not to damage the pins at the bottom of the CPU.
Align the identifying marks at the corners of the new CPU and socket, and careful-
ly install the CPU in the socket. Lower the handle to lock the CPU in place.

Increasing the memory If you run out of memory while using the computer, you may want to increase the amount of memory in your computer. About Memory Your computer uses DDR(Double Data Rate) SDRAM DIMM(Dual In-Line Memory Module) with 184 pins. Remove the screws on the real of the computer, and open the computer case. Note

Refer to Opening the computer case to open the computer case cover.
Remove the capas shown on the picture.
Always use a screwdriver to open the case cover. There is the risk of injury.
In order not to be injured when disassembling the computer, wear the gloves.
Remove 2 screws as shown on the picture.
Use the driver and remove the metal slot cover.

Hold the expansion card with both hands and align the expansion card and slot. Push down evenly to insert the card into the slot.
