1. 2. Makesurethatthecomputerspowerisoffandthatnocablesareconnected. Holdthebatterypackwiththelabelfacingup,andwiththeconnectorsonthe batteryfacingtheconnectorsonthecomputer. Pushthebatterygentlyintothebatterybayuntilthelatchclicksintoplace. 3. Connecting the AC adapter To protect your computer from damage, use only the power adapter that came with it because each power adapter has its own power output rating. PlugtheDCoutputcableintotheDCpowerjackofyournotebookPC. PlugtheACadapterintoanACelectricaloutlet. Makesureyouhaveatleastonechargedbatteryinstalled. UnplugtheACadapter.Yournotebookwillautomaticallytobatterypower. To connect the AC adapter:

1. 2. Charging the battery ThelithiumbatteryisrechargedinternallyusingtheACadapter.Torechargethe battery,makesurethebatteryisinstalled,andtheACadapterisconnectedtothe computerandtheACpowersupply.Thereisno"memoryeffect"inlithiumbatter-
ies;thereforeyoudonotneedtodischargethebatterycompletelybeforerecharg-
ing. The charge times will be significantly longer if your notebook PC is in use while thebatteryischarging. If you want to charge the battery more quickly, turn your computer off while the adapter is charging the battery.
Getting Started Switching the Power On OnceyouhaveconnectedyourACadapterorchargedtheinternallithiumbattery, poweronyournotebookbypressingthePower On/Off buttonlocatedabovethe keyboard.Topoweroff,pressthebuttonforfourseconds. Whenyoupoweronyournotebook,itwillperformapoweronselftest(POST)to check the internal hardware and configuration. If a fault is found, your computer makesawarningsoundordisplaysanerrormessage.Dependingonthenatureof theproblem,youmaybeabletocontinuebystartingtheoperatingsystemorbyen-
teringtheBIOSsetuputilityandrevisingthesettings.Aftersatisfactorycompletion ofthePOST,yournotebookloadstheinstalledoperatingsystem. Never turn off your notebook during the POST, as an unrecoverable error may occur.
Getting Started Using the Keyboard Function Keys The[FN]keyprovidesextendedfunctionsforthenotebookandisalwaysusedin conjunctionwithanotherkey.
[FN+F1]:PlacesthenotebookinSuspendmode.PressingthePowerbuttonreturns ittoactivemode.
[FN+F2]:Enablesordisablesthewirelessnetworkconnection.
[FN+F3]:Thisisusedwhenthecomputerisconnectedtoanexternalmonitor.It controlswherethevideosignalisdisplayed.Thesettingsare:built-indisplaypanel only,bothbuilt-indisplaypanelandexternalmonitor,andexternalmonitoronly. Eachtimeyoupressthiskeycombinationyousteptothenextsetting.
[FN+F4]:Increasesthescreenbrightness.
[FN+F5]:Decreasesthescreenbrightness.
[FN+F6]:Mutestheaudiovolume.
[FN+F7]:Decreasestheaudiovolume.
[FN+F8]:Increasestheaudiovolume.
[FN+F11]:SwitchesthecomputerintoNumLockmode,enablingthenumerickey-
padoverlay.
[FN+F12]:SwitchesthecomputerintoScrollLockmode.Thisisusedinsomeappli-
cations.
[FN+INS]:ThisfunctionsasthePrintScreen(PRTSCN)key.Itcopiesthecurrent screentotheclipboard.
[FN+DEL]: This functions as the System Request (SYS RQ) key, which may be used bysomeoperatingsystemsorapplications. Fn+UP ARROWThisfunctionsasthePAGEUPkey. Fn+DOWN ARROWThisfunctionsasthePAGEDOWNkey. Fn+LEFT ARROWThisfunctionsastheHOMEkey. Fn+RIGHT ARROWThisfunctionsastheENDkey.
Getting Started Keypad Overlay Althoughthekeyboarddoesnothaveaseparatenumerickeypad,thekeypadover-
layprovidesthesamefunction.Toturnnumericmodeon,press[FN+F11].The NumLockLEDlights.Youcannowusethekeypadoverlay:thekeyswithblue numbersandsymbols(7,8,9,0,U,I,O,P,J,K,L,M,PERIOD,FORWARDSLASH). Toturnnumericmodeoff,press[FN+F11]again. Using the Touch Pad ATouchPadpointingdevicecomesbuiltintoyourcomputer.Itisusedtocontrol themovementofthepointertoselectitemsonyourdisplaypanel.TheTouchPad consistsofacursorcontrol,aleftandrightbutton,andtwoscrollbuttons. Thecursorcontrolworksthesamewayamousedoes,andmovesthecursor around the display. It only requires light pressure from the tip of your finger. Theleftandrightbuttonsfunctionasmousebuttons.Theactualfunctionalityof thebuttonsmayvarydependingontheapplicationthatisbeingused. The scroll buttons allow you to navigate quickly through pages, without having tousetheon-screencursortomanipulatetheupanddownscrollbars. Clicking Clickingmeanspushingandreleasingabutton. Toleft-click,movethecursortotheitemyouwishtoselect,presstheleftbutton once,andthenimmediatelyreleaseit. Torightclick,movethemousecursortotheitemyouwishtoselect,pressthe rightbuttononce,andthenimmediatelyreleaseit. You can also click by tapping lightly on the Touch Pad once.
Getting Started Double-Clicking Double-clickingmeanspushingandreleasingtheleftbuttontwiceinrapidsucces-
sion.Thisproceduredoesnotfunctionwiththerightbutton. Todouble-click,movethecursortotheitemyouwishtoselect,presstheleftbut-
tontwice,andthenimmediatelyreleaseit. You can also double-click by tapping lightly on the Touch Pad twice. Dragging Draggingispressingandholdingtheleftbuttonwhilemovingthecursor. Todrag,movethecursortotheitemyouwishtomove.Pressandholdtheleft buttonwhilemovingtheitemtoitsnewlocationandthenreleaseit. YoucanalsodragusingtheTouchPadalone:
First,taptheTouchPadtwiceovertheitemyouwishtomove,makingsureto leaveyourfingeronthepadafterthesecondtap.Next,movetheobjecttoits new location by moving your finger across the Touch Pad, and then release your finger. Scrolling Using the Scroll buttons allows you to navigate through a document quickly with-
outusingthewindow'sscrollbars.Thisisparticularlyusefulwhenyouarenavigat-
ingthroughon-linepages.
Troubleshooting Your notebook PC is sturdy and subject to few problems in the field. However, you mayencountersimplesetuporoperatingproblemsthatyoucansolveonthespot, orproblemswithperipheraldevices,thatyoucansolvebyreplacingthedevice. Theinformationinthissectionhelpsyouisolateandresolvesomeofthesestraight-
forward problems and identify failures that require service. Identifying the Problem Ifyouencounteraproblem,gothroughthefollowingprocedurebeforepursuing complextroubleshooting:
