Description The device can read a wide range of technologies: FDX-B ISO, HDX ISO, FDX-A (FECAVA), Trovan and Avid Encrypted. UWSR+ can also read and display the Microchip Temperature when reading microchips with tem-
perature sensing implants from Destron Fearing or Allflex. In addition to its microchip reading functions, the UWSR+ scanner can store up to 3000 IDs, each associated with a time/date stamp in its internal memory and transmit them to a personal computer via an USB cable or wirelessly using Bluetooth. 2. Operation and settings 3.1 Getting Started UWSR+ comes supplied with six AAA rechargeable 1.2V 800mAh NiMH batteries which must be fully charged prior to use, as diagram below (step 1 through 4). Reader top Reader bottom 1 2 3 4 Remove retention screw located on center of back of UWSR+. Place batteries according to polarity indicators as shown on diagram. Replace lid and screw and then screw back on. Remove USB port cover and attach cable in the UWSR+. Plug the adaptor into power outlet. The battery level icon will flash while charging and stop flashing when fully charged. A full charge may take 3 hours. In the event that the batteries are improperly placed, an audible alarm will sound. Immediately remove the USB cable from the reader and the adapter from the outlet. Proceed to remove batteries and reposition in the correct orientation was described in step 2. Then repeat Steps 3 and 4. 3.2 Battery handling instructions Please read and follow the handling instructions for the batteries before its use. The batteries should only be charged with the USB cable and wall adapter supplied with the reader. Improper use of batteries may cause its capacity deterioration or cause heat, fire, rupture or damage. For best performance of batteries, unit should be charged at least every three months, if reader is unused. Caution Only use the rechargeable GoldPeak (GP) 85AAAHCB batteries provided (1.2V 800mAh NiMH). Only use the PowerPax KSAS050500100D5U AC/DC adapter provided (input: 100-240V AC 50/60Hz; output:
5.0VDC 1.0A) This product is NOT designed for use with non-rechargeable batteries such as Alkaline batteries. Batteries must be charged indoors only, at temperature between 32 F (0C) and 95F (35 C). Risk of explosion if batteries are replaced by an incorrect type. Dispose of used batteries according to the instructions. Warning Do not use the reader near water when connected to the AC/DC adapter. Do not install near any heat sources such as radiators, heat registers, stoves, or other apparatus that produce heat. Do not charge the battery pack from AC main sources during electrical storms or when unused for long periods of time. 4 3.3 Power on / off instructions To turn the UWSR+ on, press and release the SCAN button once. During this start up time the reader will dis-
play the screen below, beep once, and then display READY. Note 1: Once activated, the reader will stay on for 2 minutes by default. The UWSR+ can now be tested with the test microchip provided with key chain. While holding down scan but-
ton microchip number should appear on the display. 3.4 Reading an implanted microchip 3.4.1 Scanning and LOCATING AN IMPLANTED MICROCHIP When searching for implanted microchips, press and hold scan button and keep reader always touching the animal. When using the UWSR+ Reach with the wand connected, keep loop always touching the animal. Use the following scanning patterns to locate the microchip. Perform pattern 1 and 2 on Left, Top and Right sides of animals neck and shoulders, as microchip placement might vary per animal. Keep scanner touching animal and scan slowly following patterns below:
For Pets Scanning Pattern 1 Side to side across the body Scanning Pattern 2 Up and down the body While pressing the scan button, the reader will display SEARCHING until a microchip is found or the scan but-
ton released. If a microchip is not detected, the reader will display NO ID FOUND. In that case, we recommend re-scanning the test chip to ensure reader is operating properly. The animal, then should be re-scanned, moving slower and in varying angle according to the patterns described above. The following picture shows the result of a successful reading session:
5 3.4.2 UWSR+ Reach UWSR+ Reach reader is designed to make it easier and safer to scan the microchips on animals that are out of close reach or are aggressive. The reader can be used either with or without the wand. If the wand is not connected, then the handheld reader operates as a standard UWSR+ reader with no change in functionality. If the wand is fitted, either the button on the reader, or the one on the wand can be pressed and a scan will initiate from the hoop at the end of the wand only (not from the reader). Kit Contains:

Key Chain with test microchip CONNECTING TO WAND Step 1 Open the dust cap protecting the connector on the UWSR+ Reader. Step 2 Line up the connector at the end of the cable with the connector on the UWSR+, as shown in the image. There is a small indicator on the top area of the connector, which requires perfect align-
ment to indicator on reader to allow connection. Step 3 To initiate a scan, press and hold either the button on the UWSR+ or the blue button on the wand. The wand will take over the scanning capabilities. To scan from the UWSR+ reader, the wand needs to be disconnected from reader by pressing button on connector as shown on Image. READING MICROCHIPS WITH UWSR+ REACH Place key chain with test microchip close to the loop and press and hold blue button on wand or button on the UWSR+ Reader. When connected to the wand, the UWSR+ Reader cannot scan microchips. To scan from the UWSR+ reader, the wand needs to be disconnected from the reader. 3.4.3 Read range perfomances The figures below illustrate the reading zone of the UWSR+ and the UWSR+ Reach, where microchips can be successfully read. Optimum read distance varies depending on the type of microchip and the orientation in reference to reader. Figure 3a - Double antenna with inductance:

leased, when microchip is found, or during low battery condition. 6 Installing Software Change reader settings. Configure a Bluetooth connection with a remote device. Download reader memory and export animal IDs to Excel. Use your reader as a virtual keyboard. Update your reader firmware. 4. The UWSR+ is supplied with the Microchip Management Software. MM Software provides the following capabilities:
4.1 System requirements system. If it is not installed on your computer, the installation program will prompt you to install it (Refer to Appendix to see how to install .NET framework). Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10 (This software is not compatible with Mac OS). Personal computer with:
MM Software requires .NET Framework 3.5 which is usually installed with Windows operating 512 MB of RAM minimum. 40 MB free hard disk space. 4.2 Program installation The Microchip Management Software (MM Software) is available for download at http://microchip.homeagain.com/ :
Follow the steps below to complete the installation process:
1. Double-click on the setup package to start the installation and choose the appropriate language. Click on SOFTWARE DOWNLOAD, then Save, followed by Run. 7 2. Then, follow the steps according to screens below:
8 The USB drivers will then be installed. Then, check Always trust software and click on Install button. Click on Finish at the end of the process to close the installation. 5. Connecting to a PC 5.1 Using USB interface 1 Open the MM Software and connect the reader to a PC with the USB cable by removing the USB port cover and attaching the cable to the UWSR+ connector (after use, replace protective cap to guard the reader against foreign material contamination once the USB cable is removed). Install the USB cable by attaching it to UWSR+. 2 Plug the other extremity of the USB cable into a USB port on your com-
puter. When reader is connected, Windows will automatically find the driver and install the reader properly. 3 A message is displayed on screen, which ensures a valid connection with the PC. Note 2: Once the USB cable is connected, the reader is automatically powered on and it will remain ac-
tivated until the cable is disconnected. The reader will be able to read a microchip if sufficiently charged batteries are inserted. With depleted batteries, the reader will not be able to read a microchip, but will remain on with other functions fully active. Note 3: If a microchip was detected and the reader is connected via its USB interface or its Bluetooth interface to a host computer, it will send the microchip number to the host computer. 9 5.2 Using wireless Bluetooth connection 5.2.1 BLUETOOTH management The UWSR+ is equipped with a Class 22 Bluetooth module to communicate. This device is compliant with the Bluetooth Serial Port Profile (SPP). Enable the Bluetooth feature by using the Microchip Management Software Bluetooth works on a premise that one end of the communication will be paired to the other one. A host ini-
tiates communications and looks for other devices to connect. Smart phones and computers usually establish the connection with readers which are connectable and discoverable. Note 4: Understanding the Bluetooth icon:

Three beeps are emitted with a visual message when the disconnection occurs. Note 6: If you are using a Smartphone or a PDA, an application is required (not supplied). 5.2.2 Pairing from MM Software MM Software is able to search for Bluetooth devices in the vicinity and pair to one of them. The target here is to find your reader and to connect it to your computer by Bluetooth. NOTE: Before continuing, make sure the Bluetooth is enabled on your reader. 1. Click on Connect menu and select Connect Bluetooth Reader 2. Power-on your reader and click on Search for devices:
2 Operating distance of communication is around 15 m (49 ft). 10 3. Your reader should appear in the list. Click on Pair device to start the pairing with the reader. Make sure your reader is still on. 4. By default, the pairing code is 1234. Click OK to continue the pairing. At this moment, Windows will install the driver to create a virtual COM port. 5. Once Windows installed the driver, the COM port number appears in the Port column. You can now click on Connect Reader button to connect your reader using Bluetooth. NOTE: If the reader name is not displayed, as shown in the following picture, devices can be searched again and should now display the name. 11 5.2.3 Using Bluetooth interface to pair, from Windows Alternately, you can pair the reader using Windows Control Panel. Find below the instructions for pairing with Windows 7:
1. Open Window Control Panel 2. In Hardware and Sound section, select Add a device 3. Switch-on the reader and wait until the reader appears in the device list as following:
4. Select the appropriate reader and click with right button 5. Type the PIN code and click Next. NOTE: Your reader may appear as a Bluetooth headset. 1234 12 NOTE: If the reader is configured with Bluetooth Authentication option enabled, the pairing process is based on a code generated automatically. In this case, click next to continue (the code will not appear on the reader 6. Windows will now install the driver needed as following:
Bluetooth Peripheral Device is a service dedicated to Apples devices and is unknown from Windows operating system that the reason why the PC mentions no driver found. 7. Your reader is now ready to connect. 5.2.4 Connect by Bluetooth when the reader is already paired When your reader has already been paired to your computer, go to Connect menu, select Bluetooth link and click on the appropriate COM port:
13 6. Memory 6.1 Memory Management The UWSR+ can store up to 3000 IDs, each associated with a time/date stamp, in its internal memory and transmit them to a personal computer via an USB cable or wirelessly using Bluetooth. The tool Microchip Management Software allows you to enable/disable the memory storage. By default, the memory storage is DISABLED. To enable the memory storage follow the steps below:
1. To enable/disable memory feature, go into the reader settings panel by clicking on the Reader settings button or using the top menu as following:
2. In the reader setting panel, locate Memory and choose Enabled or Disabled option:
When memory is enabled and a microchip is read, the UWSR+ displays the number of microchips stored in mem-
ory, above the microchip number, as shown in picture below:
6.2 Download Memory 1. When memory feature is enabled, the animal identification codes can be downloaded from reader. 2. Click on Read Memory button to download the memory from the reader. 3. Export the ID code list to Excel by clicking on Export to Excel button. 4. Once finished, you can click on Clear memory to erase animal identification codes stored in the reader. 6.3 Temperature measurement The UWSR+ can read and display the Microchip Temperature when reading microchips with temperature sens-
ing implants from Allflex or Destron Fearing.3 The Microchip Temperature is displayed above the microchip number as shown in picture below:
3 Microchip Temperature range is from 33C (91.4F) to 43C (109.4F). If the temperature is below or above this range, it will display TEMP BELOW RANGE OR TEMP ABOVE RANGE. 14 phone or on Mobile Device 7. The current UWSR+ package does not in-

.NET Framework 3.5 installation 8. Appendix 8.1 MM Software requires .NET Framework 3.5 to be installed on the machine. If the following message is displayed while running the setup package, click Yes and follow the .NET Frame-
work 3.5 installation instructions. This message may vary depending on your Operating System. NOTE: The .NET Framework installation requires an internet connection. 1. After clicking on Yes, your internet browser will be opened with the following page. Click on Download button to continue. 2. Uncheck unnecessary downloads (Download summary should only contain Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5) and click on No thanks and continue:
16 3. Click Save on the bottom of the page to start .NET Framework installation. 4. Click Run on the bottom of the page to start .NET Framework installation. 5. Then, click on Download and install this feature. 6. At this step, the .NET Framework 3.5 installation program will download the required files from internet and then install the framework. This message will appear. It is now safe to close browser. 17 Verify that UWSR+ is able to read test microchip provided on key chain. Confirm that scanning is being performed away from metal objects and computer equipment, including metal collars and metal tags and away from stainless steel table. Scan animal following patterns on item 3.4.1, with slow movements and reader touching animal all the time. If the animal moves too quickly, the microchip may not be located in the reading zone long enough for the ID code information to be obtained. Replace batteries if power is weak, as it might not be sufficient to activate the field and reading distances can be reduced. Some animals might be implanted with two microchips too close to each other. In these cases, there is a risk that reader performance might be affected. Continue to scan as indicated on page 7, with slow movements, trying to identify one microchip at a time. 9. Troubleshooting Verify scanner reads test chip. Verify Memory is enabled. INCORRECT DATE / TIME Make sure memory is enabled in reader settings (refer to Microchip Management Software User Guide). Verify Microchip is a temperature sensing implant from ALLFLEX or DESTRON FEARING Verify Temperature Scanning is enabled. Verify batteries have been installed correctly and have full charge. If reader displays Low battery with rechargeable cells: Recharge the batteries. If reader displays Battery depleted with rechargeable cells: Recharge the batteries. Reader Physical Integrity The device has been built from rugged and durable materials to withstand use in harsh environments for long periods of time. However, the reader contains electronic components that can be damaged if they are deliber-
ately exposed to extreme abuse. This damage can adversely affect, or stop the readers operation. The user must avoid deliberately striking other surfaces and objects with the device. Damage that results from such handling is not covered by the warranty described below. 12. Limited Product Warranty The Universal WorldScan Reader Plus is warranted against defects in materials and workmanship, under normal use and service for two (2) years from the day of shipment. This warranty will not apply if adjustment, repair or parts replacement is required because of accident, neglect, damage during transportation or causes other than ordinary use. Manufacturers sole responsibility under this warranty shall be at its option, to either repair or replace any product which fails during the warranty period. In no event shall Manufacturer be liable for any indirect or consequential damages or loss of profit. 13.
