Do not leave children unattended in the vehicle, especially with access to vehicle keys. Unsupervised use of the keys can result in starting of the engine or use of vehicle systems such as the power windows, etc. which could result in serious injury. If you open the drivers door with the key left in the ignition lock, a chime will sound. This is your reminder to remove the key and lock the door. Key replacement For security reasons, replacement keys are only avail-
able from Audi dealers. Please note the following if you need a replacement key:
Go to your authorized Audi dealer. Give your authorized dealer the key information. If you lose a key, contact your authorized Audi dealer immediately to have the lost key disabled. Be sure to bring all your keys and the key tag with you. Your authorized Audi dealer must have the key number in order to replace your lost key. The key number can be found on the plastic tag page 49, fig. 28

page 25. You may not be able to start your vehicle if an ignition key of a different vehicle make is also located on your set of keys. Power locking system General description The power locking system locks or unlocks all doors, the rear lid and fuel filler flap simultaneously. The power locking system in your vehicle incorporates the following functions:
Central locking function Remote control feature page 53. Anti-Theft Alarm System page 61. You can lock and unlock the vehicle from outside either with the keys or the remote control transmitter inside the master key. Activating the power locking system locks or unlocks all doors, the rear lid and fuel filler flap simultaneously. The rear lid is also unlocked when you open the vehicle, however you must open it by hand. To lock or unlock the rear lid, you can use the remote control page 53 or when you lock or unlock the driver's door using the key. You can also open or close the windows and power top when you lock or unlock the driver's door using the key. For safety reasons, you cannot use the remote control to open or close the windows and power top. If the power locking system should malfunction, you can lock and unlock each lock individually using the vehicle key, with the excep-
tion of the fuel filler flap. See fuel filler flap, emergency opening
page 261. s3p.book Seite 53 Freitag, 5. Juli 2002 12:05 12 Opening and closing 53 Automatic locking*
The automatic locking feature locks all the vehicle doors and the rear lid when you drive faster than 8 mph (13 km/h). You can unlock the vehicle from the inside by:
removing the key from the ignition switch (the vehicle will auto-
matically unlock itself) or pressing the unlock part of the power lock switch ) or pulling the door handle (twice to open the door). If you wish, you can have an authorized Audi dealer convert your power door lock system to automatic locking. WARNING When you lock your vehicle from outside, nobody - especially children - should remain inside the vehicle. Remember, when you lock the vehicle from the outside the windows cannot be opened from the inside When you leave the vehicle, always remove the ignition key and take it with you. This will prevent passengers (children, for example) from accidentally being locked in the vehicle should they accidentally press the power locking switch on the center console. Do not leave children inside the vehicle unsupervised. In an emergency it would be impossible to open the doors from the outside without the key. Remote control General description The remote control allows you to lock or unlock the vehicle electronically. The remote controls allows you to:
lock or unlock the vehicle unlock the rear lid The turn signals will blink whenever you lock or unlock the vehicle. Also, the interior light will come on or go off whenever you open or close the driver's door. The transmitter and battery are located in the head of the remote control. The receiver is located inside the vehicle. The maximum effective range depends on several things. Remember, if the battery is weak, the effective range decreases. The remote control key contains a folded up key. You have to unfold the key first in order to lock or unlock the vehicle or to start the engine. If you need to replace the remote control, or if you need to have it repaired, you must see your authorized Audi dealer. Only then can you use the key again. Note If the ignition is switched on, the remote control system is deac-
tivated. The remote control system can be affected by other systems operating in the same frequency range close to the vehicle, such as mobile telephones, television broadcasting stations, etc. Controls and equip-

Anti-theft alarm system Description The anti-theft alarm triggers an alarm if anyone attempts to break into the vehicle. The anti-theft alarm system triggers an audible alarm and turns on the emergency flasher if an unauthorized interference with the vehicle is sensed by the system. How is the anti-theft alarm system switched on?
The anti-theft alarm system is switched on when you lock the drivers door manually using your key, or when you use the remote control. The system is activated approximately 30 seconds after the Controls and equip-
ment Safety first Vehicle operation Vehicle care Do-it-yourself service Technical data s3p.book Seite 62 Freitag, 5. Juli 2002 12:05 12 62 Opening and closing vehicle is locked. The indicator light on the front door window sill starts flashing. The anti-theft alarm system will also go off when the battery is disconnected. How is the anti-theft alarm system switched off?
The anti-theft alarm system is switched off only when you use the remote control to unlock your vehicle. If you do not open a door within 60 seconds after you have unlocked with the remote control, the vehicle will lock itself again automatically. If you lock just the drivers door using your key, the front passenger's door, the rear and the fuel filler flap remain locked. If you use the vehicle key to unlock the drivers door, the other doors, the rear lid and the fuel tank flap will remain locked. The alarm system will not be deactivated unless you insert the key in the ignition switch within 15 seconds and turn on the ignition. If you fail to do this, the alarm will sound. When will the anti theft alarm system be triggered?
When the vehicle is locked, the alarm system monitors and protects the following parts of the vehicle:
engine compartment luggage compartment doors vehicle incline ignition factory installed radio When the system is activated, the alarm will be triggered if one of the doors, the engine hood or the rear lid are opened, or if the igni-
tion is turned on or the radio removed or if the vehicle incline has been changed. The anti-theft alarm system will also go off when you unlock the rear lid with your key and open it. The alarm is switched off again when you close the rear lid. You can also trigger the alarm by pressing the PANIC button on your remote control. This will alert other people in case of emergency. Press the PANIC button again to turn off the alarm. How is the anti-theft alarm switched off when triggered?
The alarm system is switched off when you unlock the vehicle using the remote control or when the ignition is switched on. The alarm will also switch itself off when it comes to the end of its cycle. Emergency flasher The emergency flasher will blink briefly when the doors, engine hood and rear lid are properly closed. If the emergency flashers do not blink, check the doors, engine hood and rear lid to make sure they are properly closed. If you close a door, the hood or the rear lid with the anti-theft alarm switched on, the emergency flashers will blink only after you have closed the door or lid. Indicator lights After you lock the vehicle, the indicator light on the window sill will first blink rapidly for 30 seconds and will then blink slowly. This indi-
cates that the anti-theft alarm system is activated. Note For the anti-theft alarm system to function properly, make sure all vehicle doors and windows are closed before leaving the vehicle. When you open the vehicle from the driver's door using the key, the central locking switch will work only after you have switched on the ignition. s3p.book Seite 63 Freitag, 5.
