Mobile Data Collector Figure 1-1: MODAT-550A The MODAT-550A is an Android-based mobile data collector with a 5.5 touchscreen. At the heart of the system is the octa-core ARM Cortex -A53 1.5 GHz CPU. Wireless communication technologies include 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 4.0 LE. WARNING!
Only remove the protective plastic cover stuck to the front screen after installation. The plastic layer protects the monitor surface during installation process. Step 1: Carefully cut the tape sealing the box. Only cut deep enough to break the tape. Step 2: Open the box. Step 3: Lift the MODAT-550A out of the box. Step 4: Make sure all the components listed in the packing list are present. Step 0:

Failure to take ESD precautions during the maintenance of the MODAT-550A may result in permanent damage to the MODAT-550A and severe injury to the user. Electrostatic discharge (ESD) can cause serious damage to electronic components, including the MODAT-550A. Dry climates are especially susceptible to ESD. It is therefore critical that whenever the MODAT-550A is accessed internally, or any other electrical component is handled, the following anti-static precautions are strictly adhered to. Wear an anti-static wristband: - Wearing a simple anti-static wristband can help to prevent ESD from damaging the board. Self-grounding: - Before handling the board touch any grounded conducting material. During the time the board is handled, frequently touch any conducting materials that are connected to the ground. Use an anti-static pad: - When configuring the MODAT-550A, place it on an antic-static pad. This reduces the possibility of ESD damaging the MODAT-550A. 3.2 Installation Precautions When installing the MODAT-550A, please follow the precautions listed below:
Power turned off: When installing the MODAT-550A, make sure the power is off. Failing to turn off the power may cause severe injury to the body and/or damage to the system. Certified Engineers: Only certified engineers should install and modify onboard functionalities. Anti-static Discharge: If a user open the rear panel of the MODAT-550A, to configure the jumpers or plug in added peripheral devices, ground themselves first and wear and anti-static wristband. Danger of explosion if battery is incorrectly replaced. Replace only with the same or equivalent type recommended by the manufacturer. Disposal of a battery into fire or a hot oven, or mechanically crushing or cutting of a battery, that can result in an explosion. Leaving a battery in an extremely high temperature surrounding environment that can result in an explosion or the leakage of flammable liquid or gas. A battery subjected to extremely low air pressure that may result in an explosion or the leakage of flammable liquid or gas. 3.3 Charging the System To start using the MODAT-550A, the user must charge the MODAT-550A by the power adapter. To charge the MODAT-550A, please follow the steps below. Step 1: Open the protective rubber cover to expose the Micro USB port. Step 2: Connect the Micro USB plug of the Micro USB cable to the Micro USB connector of the MODAT-550A (Figure 3-1). Figure 3-1: Connecting the Micro USB Cable to the MODAT-550A Page 14 MODAT-550A Mobile Data Collector Step 3: Pick the power plug that suits the users territory, and secure it to the power adapter (Figure 3-2). Figure 3-2: Connecting the Power Plug Step 4: Connect the other end of the Micro USB cable to the USB connector of the power adapter (Figure 3-3). Then plug the power adapter to a power source. OR connect the Micro USB cable directly to a computer. Figure 3-3: Connecting the MODAT-550A to the Power Adapter Step 5: The LED indicator on the front panel lights up in red to indicate that the battery is charging. When the battery is fully charged, the LED indicator turns green. Step 0:
Page 15 MODAT-550A Mobile Data Collector 3.4 microSD Card Installation This section covers the installation of a microSD card. Release the six retention screws that secure the battery cover to the MODAT-550A. WARNING:
Before removing the battery cover, make sure that the system power is turned off and all power to the system has been disconnected. Failing to do so may cause severe damage to the MODAT-550A and injury to the user. Figure 3-4: Battery Cover Retention Screws Step 1: Lift the battery cover up to remove. Figure 3-5: microSD Card Slot Page 17 3.5 I/O Connectors MODAT-550A Mobile Data Collector The I/O connectors are protected by a rubber cover. Open the rubber cover before connecting any peripheral devices to the MODAT-550A. 3.5.1 Headset Jack The headset jack on the top panel enables the MODAT-550A to be connected to a headset. Open the protective rubber cover to expose the headset jack before connection. Figure 3-6: MODAT-550A Headset Jack 3.5.2 Micro USB Connector The MODAT-550A is equipped with a Micro USB connector that allows connection to a computer or the supplied power adapter. Refer to Step 1 ~ Step 3 in Section 0 to connect the MODAT-550A to a computer or power adapter by using the supplied Micro USB cable. After connecting the MODAT-550A to a computer, follow the steps below to allow transferring files between the computer and MODAT-550A. Step 1: Swipe down from the top of the screen, then tap USB for file transfer

Tap Transfer files to allow the connected computer to recognize the MODAT-550A. Then the user can transfer files between them. Please contact the system reseller or vendor to purchase the replacement parts. NOTE:
A user cannot replace a motherboard. If the motherboard fails it must be shipped back to IEI to be replaced. Please contact the system vendor, reseller or an IEI sales person directly. Page 20 MODAT-550A Mobile Data Collector Chapter 4 4 Using the MODAT-550A Page 21 MODAT-550A Mobile Data Collector 4.1 Powering On/Off To power on/off the MODAT-550A, please follow the steps below:
Powering On: Press the power button until the start-up screen displays. Figure 4-1: Power Button Powering Off: Press and hold the power button until the Power off menu as shown in Figure 4-2 appears. Tap Power off to turn off the MODAT-550A. Figure 4-2: Power Off Menu NOTE:
When the MODAT-550A is powered on, press the power button once to suspend the MODAT-550A or to resume from the suspend mode. Page 22 MODAT-550A Mobile Data Collector 4.2 Home Screen The MODAT-550A has multiple home screens allowing users to customize the screen with widgets, apps and shortcuts. The following sections describe the basic technique to manage the home screen. 4.2.1 Adding a Home Screen To add a home screen, touch and hold an app/widget icon. A icon (Figure 4-3) appears, indicating that a new home screen is available. Drag and release the icon to the new home screen. Figure 4-4: Multiple Home Screens Page 24 MODAT-550A Mobile Data Collector 4.2.3 Favorites Tray The Favorites tray at the bottom of each home screen allows users to keep the most important or frequently used shortcuts. Tap the (All Apps) button at the center of the Favorites Tray to access the All Apps page. Figure 4-5: Favorites Tray Page 25 MODAT-550A Mobile Data Collector 4.2.4 Adding Shortcuts To add app or widget shortcuts on the home screen, follow the steps below. Step 1: To add an app shortcut, tap the All Apps button on the home screen to access the All Apps page. To add a widget shortcut, touch and hold the background of a home screen, then tap WIDGETS. Step 2: Touch and hold an app/widget icon and drag it to the home screen. Touch and hold an item on the home screen and drag it where you want. To trash the item on the screen, drag it to the Remove icon. Release the icon when it turns red. Page 29 MODAT-550A Mobile Data Collector Figure 4-10: Notification List and System Status Page 30 MODAT-550A Mobile Data Collector 4.5 Settings The Settings menu allows configuration to the MODAT-550A, such as Wi-Fi, volume, display brightness, etc. To enter the Settings menu, tap Settings on the All Apps page. 4.5.1 Wireless & Networks Figure 4-11: Wireless and Networks Settings In the Wireless & networks field, the user can turn on/off the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth functions. Wi-Fi:
Allows the user to turn on or off the Wi-Fi function and manage the access points. The user can tap to configure advanced Wi-Fi settings. Page 31 MODAT-550A Mobile Data Collector Bluetooth:
Allows the user to turn on or off the Bluetooth function and manage the Bluetooth connections. Data usage:

Allows the user to set this device as a portable Wi-Fi hotspot, configure the hotspot settings and turn on or off the USB/Bluetooth tethering function. VPN:
Sets up and manages Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). Cellular networks:
Configures the cellular network settings. Page 33 4.5.2 Barcode MODAT-550A Mobile Data Collector The barcode menu allows powering on/off the barcode reader and configuring its settings. B.1.1 General Safety Precautions Please ensure the following safety precautions are adhered to at all times. Follow the electrostatic precautions outlined below whenever the MODAT-550A is opened. Make sure the power is turned off and the power cord is disconnected whenever the MODAT-550A is being installed, moved or modified. Do not apply voltage levels that exceed the specified voltage range. Doing so may cause fire and/or an electrical shock. Electric shocks can occur if the MODAT-550A chassis is opened when the MODAT-550A is running. Do not drop or insert any objects into the ventilation openings of the MODAT-550A. If considerable amounts of dust, water, or fluids enter the MODAT-550A, turn off the power supply immediately, unplug the power cord, and contact the MODAT-550A vendor. DO NOT:

Failure to take ESD precautions during the installation of the MODAT-550A may result in permanent damage to the MODAT-550A and severe injury to the user. Electrostatic discharge (ESD) can cause serious damage to electronic components, including the MODAT-550A. Dry climates are especially susceptible to ESD. It is therefore critical that whenever the MODAT-550A is opened and any of the electrical components are handled, the following anti-static precautions are strictly adhered to. Wear an anti-static wristband: Wearing a simple anti-static wristband can help to prevent ESD from damaging any electrical component. Self-grounding: Before handling any electrical component, touch any grounded conducting material. During the time the electrical component is handled, frequently touch any conducting materials that are connected to the ground. Use an anti-static pad: When configuring or working with an electrical component, place it on an antic-static pad. This reduces the possibility of ESD damage. Except for the LCD panel, never spray or squirt liquids directly onto any other components. To clean the LCD panel, gently wipe it with a piece of soft dry cloth or a slightly moistened cloth. The interior of the MODAT-550A does not require cleaning. Keep fluids away from the MODAT-550A interior. Be cautious of all small removable components when vacuuming the MODAT-550A. Turn the MODAT-550A off before cleaning the MODAT-550A. Never drop any objects or liquids through the openings of the MODAT-550A. Be cautious of any possible allergic reactions to solvents or chemicals used when cleaning the MODAT-550A. Avoid eating, drinking and smoking within vicinity of the MODAT-550A. B.2.2 Cleaning Tools Some components in the MODAT-550A may only be cleaned using a product specifically designed for the purpose. In such case, the product will be explicitly mentioned in the cleaning tips. Below is a list of items to use when cleaning the MODAT-550A. Cloth Although paper towels or tissues can be used, a soft, clean piece of cloth is recommended when cleaning the MODAT-550A. Water or rubbing alcohol A cloth moistened with water or rubbing alcohol can be used to clean the MODAT-550A. Using solvents The use of solvents is not recommended when cleaning the MODAT-550A as they may damage the plastic parts.
