Off : The Personal Monitor is undocked. 5. Lever frame When the Personal Monitor is docked on the Base Station Charger, the lever frame latches the Personal Monitor to the Base Station Charger. 6. Hook The Personal Monitor is held in place by hooks. 7. Center LED Center LED is to fi nd location of the Base Station Charger. 8. PAGE button Press the PAGE button to locate the Personal Monitor by the sound that it emits. 9. PAIR button You can pair the Personal Monitor with the Base Station Charger again by pressing the PAIR button. 10. RESET button If the Base Station Charger fails to operate properly, you can reset the Base Station Charger by pressing the RESET button with the tip of a pen or paper clip. 11. TELEPHONE LINE connector Plug the telephone line cord into this connector. 12. Power Adaptor connector (DC IN 5V) Plug the power adaptor into this connector. ER10VW 011 Charging Your Battery You can charge your battery using the Base Station Charger or Travel Dock Station. When charging, the Personal Monitor holder for each accessory should be attached. Charging your battery using the Base Station Charger (with the Wrist Strap accessory) 1. Plug the power adaptor into the power adaptor connector (DC IN 5V). Plug the telephone line cord into the TELEPHONE LINE connector.
NOTE Under normal usage, the Base Station Charger relies on the external power adaptor for its power supply. Insert the power adaptor into the power adaptor connector, and plug the unit into a standard outlet. Back up battery power will only be used during power failure or if the external power adaptor is not in use. The Base Station Charger provides two TELEPHONE LINE connector. The connectors use the same telephone number. 012 Verizon Plug one end of a telephone line cord into a TELEPHONE LINE connector and the other end into the back of a home telephone or home telephone base unit. Do not plug Home Phone Connect into your TELEPHONE LINE connector. This confi guration is not supported unless you have taken steps to disconnect the landline wires coming into your home. The Personal Monitor and telephone line cord are for indoor use only. Only corded telephones connected directly to the Home Phone Connect will receive service. If the Home Phone Connect is connected to a cordless phone base station, any extension phones compatible with that base station will also receive service. 2. Plug the other end of the power adaptor into a standard outlet. ER10VW 013 3. Align the Personal Monitors charge terminal with the Base Station Charger connectors, and then push down fi rmly on the top end of the Personal Monitor until you hear it click into place. Amber LED indicator of Emergency Help Key means the battery is charging. Green LED indicator of Emergency Help Key means the battery is charged within 90 % of its capacity and can be used. An additional hours of charging will bring your battery up to 100 % capacity. To undock the Personal Monitor from the Base Station Charger, lift it from the top end. NOTE You can follow these same steps for charging the Personal Monitor in a Lanyard or Belt Clip accessory. However, in the case of the Belt Clip accessory, you must fi rst separate the Belt Clip from the Personal Monitor holder before you dock it for charging. Dust or dirt on the connecting terminal of the battery charger may cause malfunction. Please use only the original Base Station Charger and Travel Dock Station you received with your Personal Monitor. Use of an unapproved Personal Monitor can cause damage the Base Station Charger or the Personal Monitor. The battery may not be fully charged at the time of purchase. Fully charge the battery before using. Charging time may vary depending on the temperature. 014 Verizon How to Use Accessories Read the information on how to use the accessories carefully before using the Personal Monitor. Using the Wrist Strap accessory At the time of purchase, the Wrist Strap and Personal Monitor holder will be provided separately. Attaching To attach the Personal Monitor holder to the Wrist Strap, follow these instructions. 1. The backside of the Personal Monitor holder has two attachment slots. Slip the accessory attachment band into the bottom slot and pull it through the top slot. 2. Press down fi rmly to attach the band to the velcro wrist strap. ER10VW 015 3. The Personal Monitor has three alignment grooves at the bottom. Align them with the bottom clip of the Personal Monitor holder. 4. Push down fi rmly the grooved top of the Personal Monitor into the top clip of the Personal Monitor holder until you hear it click. 016 Verizon 5. Slide the locking switch to the right to lock the Personal Monitor into place. If the Personal Monitor is not properly locked into place, it may slide out and drop. 6. You are now ready to wear the Wrist Strap accessory. Overlap and adjust the Wrist Strap for a comfortable fi t. If you wear the Wrist Strap accessory for extended periods of time, you may experience some occasional discomfort in your wrist. While wearing the Wrist Strap accessory, avoid bumping your Personal Monitor into other objects. While wearing the Wrist Strap accessory, you may experience some skin irritation. Please consult your physician if condition worsens. ER10VW 017 Separating To separate and remove the Personal Monitor holder from the Wrist Strap, follow these instructions. 1. Slide the locking switch to the left to unlock and release the Personal Monitor from the Wrist Strap. 2. Hold the Personal Monitor from the top end and pull it out from the top clip of the Personal Monitor holder. Avoid pressing other buttons on the Personal Monitor when removing it from the Personal Monitor holder. When removing the Personal Monitor from the holder, be careful not to drop it. 018 Verizon Using the Lanyard accessory Attaching To attach the Personal Monitor to the Lanyard, follow these instructions. 1. The Personal Monitor has three alignment grooves at the bottom. Align them with the bottom clip of the Personal Monitor holder. 2. Push down fi rmly the grooved top of the Personal Monitor into the top clip of the Personal Monitor holder until you hear it click. ER10VW 019 3. Connect the ends of the Lanyard. Wear the accessory around your neck with the Personal Monitor display facing away from you. If you wear the Lanyard accessory with the Personal Monitor display facing you, the microphone will be covered and the call quality will not be as good. Bumping into objects or falling while wearing the Lanyard accessory may cause bodily injury. Avoid getting the Lanyard snagged on an object. Separating To separate and remove the Personal Monitor from the Lanyard, follow these instructions. 1. To release the Personal Monitor, gently press back the top tab of the Personal Monitor holder. Then lift the Personal Monitor up to remove it. Applying too much pressure on the top tab of the Personal Monitor holder may damage it. Avoid pressing other buttons on the Personal Monitor when removing it from the Personal Monitor holder. When removing the Personal Monitor from the Personal Monitor holder, be careful not to drop it. 020 Verizon Using the Belt Clip accessory Attaching To attach the Personal Monitor holder to the Belt Clip, follow these instructions. 1. The backside of the Personal Monitor holder has a locking peg. Slide it down the side channels of the Belt Clip until you hear it click into place. After the Personal Monitor holder is attached to the Belt Clip, you can rotate it 360 degrees. Applying too much force to rotate it may damage the items. 2. The Personal Monitor has three alignment grooves at the bottom. Align them with the bottom clip of the Personal Monitor holder. ER10VW 021 3. Push down fi rmly the grooved top of the Personal Monitor into the top clip of the Personal Monitor holder until you hear it click. 022 Verizon Separating 1. To separate and release the Personal Monitor, gently press back the top tab of the Personal Monitor holder. Then lift the Personal Monitor up to remove it. Applying too much pressure on the top tab of the Personal Monitor holder may damage it. Avoid pressing other buttons on the Personal Monitor when removing it from the Personal Monitor holder. When removing the Personal Monitor from the Personal Monitor holder, be careful not to drop it. 2. Press the Release button to separate the Belt Clip from the Personal Monitor holder. Please refer to the section on how to use the Belt Clip accessory. ER10VW 023 Turning Verizon SureResponseTM Personal Monitor
(Personal Monitor) On Turning your Personal Monitor on 1. Press Emergency Help Key. NOTE Even if you press the Emergency Help Key again, the Personal Monitor will not turn off . Make sure that your Personal Monitor is always suffi ciently charged and ready for use in the case of an emergency. Out-of-box user experience 1. Begin by plugging in these fi rst two items: the power adaptor and telephone line cord.
The Base Station Charger performs a self-diagnosis. The LED indicates that the power is on and telephone line is connected. The Personal Monitor displays a message: Dock to Charge. 2. Dock the Personal Monitor to charge it. The LED on the Base Station Charger will indicate the charge status for the Personal Monitor. When the Personal Monitor reaches a 50% charge level, it displays a message: Press to Start. The Personal Monitor then dials *22899 to connect to the Call Center. 024 Verizon 3. Press the Call button to start the activation. A voice recording informs you when the activation starts. The Personal Monitor displays a message: Activating. A voice recording and screen messages inform you that the Personal Monitor is calling the Call Center to complete the activation process. 4. You will need to provide your onboarding information to the Call Center agent. 5. You will have the option to provide additional information either by using the Call Center or by accessing their web site. The Call Center will assist you with pairing the Personal Monitor. The Call Center will inform you that they will make a test call to your Personal Monitor in 5 minutes. The test call is for the purpose of verifying that you have caller ID on your home phone line. You will also receive additional information on the use of the Personal Monitor and about the ER10VW service. Your Personal Monitor and Base Station Charger are now ready for your use. Activating your Personal Monitor Activation Failure VRI will send you a message if your Personal Monitor is not successfully activated 15 days after purchase. When the Personal Monitor reaches a 50% charge level, it displays a message: Press to Start. The Personal Monitor then dials *22899 to connect to the Call Center. 1. Press the Call button to start the activation. A voice recording informs you when the activation starts. The Personal Monitor displays a message: Activating. a. If the Personal Monitor fails to activate, it automatically redials *22899 to connect with the Call Center. ER10VW 025 b. If the Personal Monitor is activated, a voice recording and screen messages inform you that the Personal Monitor is calling the Call Center to complete the activation process. NOTE If the Personal Monitor is not activated during the third attempt:
A voice recording will inform you that the Personal Monitor failed to activate and you should either retry in an outside location or call VZW Customer Support. 2. You will need to provide your onboarding information to the Call Center agent. 3. You will have the option to provide additional information either by using the Call Center or by accessing their web site. The Call Center will assist you with pairing the Personal Monitor. The Call Center will inform you that they will make a test call to your Personal Monitor in 5 minutes. The test call is for the purpose of verifying that you have caller ID on your home phone line. You will also receive additional information on the use of the Personal Monitor and about the ER10VW service. Your Personal Monitor and Base Station Charger are now ready for your use. Resetting the Personal Monitor If the Personal Monitor fails to operate properly, you can reset it. 1. Turn the Personal Monitor off and on by pressing the Reset button (a small depressed hole) located in the upper left-hand side of the Personal Monitor. 2. Press the Reset button using the tip of a pen or paper clip. 028 Verizon Getting Started LCD Display Screen

Pairing is possible up to six Personal Monitors with the Base Station Charger. If more than six Personal Monitors are registered, the fi rst registered Personal Monitor is cancelled in order. 1. Dock the Personal Monitor on the Base Station Charger. 2. Press the PAIR button located in the left of the Base Station Charger. 3. Activity LED is blinking and the Base Station Charger is pairing with the Personal Monitor. 4. Pairing is completed when Activity LED is turned off . 030 Verizon Paging Paging Method You can locate the Personal Monitor paired with the Base Station Charger by pressing the PAGE button. 1. Press the PAGE button located in the right of the Base Station Charger. 2. The Personal Monitor paired with the Base Station Charger emits the alert sound. 3. If you press the PAGE button again, the alert sound from the Personal Monitor is off . ER10VW 031 Phone Calls Making an Emergency Call In an emergency case, press the Emergency Help Key to connect to the Call Center. Making an emergency call 1. Press 2. Press 3. The Call Center agent will connect you with the designated hospital facility and/or your designated Emergency Help Key to turn on the LCD display. Emergency Help Key to connect to the Call Center. family point-of-contact for emergencies. 4. To end the emergency call, press Emergency Help Key. NOTE If your Personal Monitor is outside the frequency range of the Base Station Charger, it will be connected by data service automatically. You will incur data fees. 032 Verizon Safety Information Safety Information for Wireless Handheld Phones Read this information before using your handheld portable cellular telephone. Driving safety Talking on the phone while driving is extremely dangerous and is illegal in some states. Remember, safety comes fi rst. Check the laws and regulations on the use of phones in the areas where you drive. Always obey them. If you must use your phone while driving, please:
Give full attention to driving. Driving safely is your fi rst responsibility. Use hands-free operation and/or one-touch, speed dialing. Pull off the road and park before making or answering a call. An air bag infl ates with great force. DO NOT place objects, including either installed or portable wireless equipment, in the area over the air bag or in the air bag deployment area. If in-vehicle wireless equipment is improperly installed and the air bag infl ates, serious injury could result. Failure to follow these instructions could lead to serious personal injury and possible property damage. Electronic devices Your wireless handheld portable telephone is a low power radio transmitter and receiver. When it is ON, it receives and also sends out radio frequency (RF) signals. Most modern electronic equipment is shielded from RF energy. However, certain electronic equipment may not be shielded against the RF signals from your wireless phone. Therefore, use of your phone must be restricted in certain situations. ER10VW 033 Pacemakers The Health Industry Manufacturers Association recommends that a minimum separation of six (6) inches be maintained between a handheld wireless phone and a pacemaker to avoid potential interference with the pacemaker. These recommendations are consistent with the independent research and recommendations of Wireless Technology Research. Never come closer than six (6) inches to a person with a heart pacemaker implant when using your phone. Doing so could result in interference with the function of the pacemaker. Persons with pacemakers:
ALWAYS keep the phone more than six (6) inches from your pacemaker when the phone is turned on. Do not carry the phone in a breast pocket. Use the ear opposite the pacemaker to minimize the potential for interference. If you have any reason to suspect that interference is taking place, turn your phone OFF immediately. Hearing AIDS Some digital wireless phones may interfere with some hearing aids. In the event of such interference, you may want to consult your service provider (or call the customer service line to discuss alternatives). Other medical devices If you use any other personal medical device, consult the manufacturer of your device to determine if they are adequately shielded from external RF energy. Your physician may be able to assist you in obtaining this information. 034 Verizon Hospitals and health care facilities Turn your phone OFF in health care facilities when any regulations posted in these areas instruct you to do so. Hospitals or healthcare facilities may be using equipment that could be sensitive to external RF energy. Vehicles RF signals may aff ect improperly installed or inadequately shielded electronic systems in motor vehicles. Check with the manufacturer or its representative regarding your vehicle. You should also consult the manufacturer of any equipment that has been added to your vehicle. Posted facilities Turn your phone OFF where posted notices so require. Aircraft FCC regulations prohibit using your phone while in the air. Turn your phone OFF before boarding an aircraft. Always request and obtain prior consent and approval of an authorized airline representative before using your phone aboard an aircraft. Always follow the instructions of the airline representative whenever using your phone aboard an aircraft, to prevent any possible interference with airborne electronic equipment. Blasting areas To avoid interfering with blasting operations, turn your phone OFF when in a blasting area or in areas posted Turn off two-way radio. Obey all signs and instructions. ER10VW 035 Potentially explosive atmospheres Turn your phone OFF when in any area with a potentially explosive atmosphere and obey all signs and instructions. Sparks in such areas could cause an explosion or fi re resulting in bodily injury or even death. Areas with a potentially explosive atmosphere are often, but not always, clearly marked. They include fueling areas such as gas stations: below deck on boats: fuel or chemical transfer or storage facilities:
vehicles using liquefi ed petroleum gas (such as propane or butane): areas where the air contains chemicals or particles, such as grain, dust, or metal powders: and any other area where you would normally be advised to turn off your vehicles engine. 036 Verizon Important safety instructions Follow these safety precautions when using your phone to reduce the risk of fi re, electric shock, and injury to persons or property:
(1) Keep all slits and openings of the phone unblocked. Do not set the phone on a heating register or over a radiator. Ensure that proper ventilation is provided at the installation site.
(2) Do not use while wet or while standing in water.
(3) Do not use this product near water (for example, near a bath tub, kitchen sink, or swimming pool).
(4) Do not allow anything to rest on the power cord. Place the power cord so that it will not be walked on.
(5) Never insert objects of any kind into the product slits as that may result in fi re or shock.
(6) Unplug this product from the wall outlet before cleaning. Do not use liquid cleaners or aerosol cleaners. Use a damp cloth for cleaning.
(7) Do not disassemble this product. If service or repair work is required, contact the customer service helpline found in this users guide.
(8) Do not overload wall outlets and extension cords.

These types of wireless phones can expose the user to measurable radiofrequency energy (RF) because of the short distance between the phone and the users head. These RF exposures are limited by Federal Communications Commission safety guidelines that were developed with the advice of FDA and other federal health and safety agencies. When the phone is located at greater distances from the user, the exposure to RF is drastically lower because a persons RF exposure decreases rapidly with increasing distance from the source. The so-called cordless phones, which have a base unit connected to the telephone wiring in a house, typically operate at far lower power levels, and thus produce RF exp osures well within the FCCs compliance limits. 2. Do wireless phones pose a health hazard?
The available scientifi c evidence does not show that any health problems are associated with using wireless phones. There is no proof, however, that wireless phones are absolutely safe. Wireless phones emit low levels of radiofrequency energy (RF) in the microwave range while being used. They also emit very low levels of RF when in the standby mode. Whereas high levels of RF can produce health eff ects (by heating tissue), exposure to low level RF that does not produce heating eff ects causes no known adverse health eff ects. Many studies of low level RF exposures have not found any biological eff ects. Some studies have suggested that some biological eff ects may occur, but such fi ndings have not been confi rmed by additional research. The research done thus far has produced confl icting results, and many studies have suff ered from fl aws in their research methods. Animal experiments investigating the eff ects of radiofrequency energy (RF) exposures characteristic of wireless phones have yielded confl icting results that often cannot be repeated in other laboratories. A few animal studies, however, have suggested that low levels of RF could accelerate the development of cancer in laboratory animals. However, many of the studies that showed increased tumor development used animals that had been genetically engineered or treated with cancer-causing chemicals so as to be pre-disposed to develop cancer in the absence of RF exposure. Other studies exposed the animals to RF for up to 22 hours per day. These conditions are not similar to the conditions under which people use wireless phones, so we dont know with certainty what the results of such studies mean for human health. Three large epidemiology studies have been published since December 2000. Between them, the studies investigated any possible association between the use of wireless phones and primary brain cancer, glioma, meningioma, or acoustic neuroma, tumors of the brain or salivary gland, leukemia, or other cancers. None of the studies demonstrated the existence of any harmful health eff ects from wireless phone RF exposures. However, none of the studies can answer questions about long-term exposures, since the average period of phone use in these studies was around three years. 048 Verizon 5. What research is needed to decide whether RF exposure from wireless phones poses a health risk?
A combination of laboratory studies and epidemiological studies of people actually using wireless phones would provide some of the data that are needed. Lifetime animal exposure studies could be completed in a few years. However, very large numbers of animals would be needed to provide reliable proof of a cancer promoting eff ect if one exists. Epidemiological studies can provide data that is directly applicable to human populations, but 10 or more years follow-up may be needed to provide answers about some health eff ects, such as cancer. This is because the interval between the time of exposure to a cancer-causing agent and the time tumors develop - if they do - may be many, many years. The interpretation of epidemiological studies is hampered by diffi culties in measuring actual RF exposure during day-to-day use of wireless phones. Many factors aff ect this measurement, such as the angle at which the phone is held, or which model of phone is used. 6. What is FDA doing to fi nd out more about the possible health eff ects of wireless phone RF?
FDA is working with the U.S. National Toxicology Program and with groups of investigators around the world to ensure that high priority animal studies are conducted to address important questions about the eff ects of exposure to radiofrequency energy (RF). FDA has been a leading participant in the World Health Organization International Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) Project since its inception in 1996. An infl uential result of this work has been the development of a detailed agenda of research needs that has driven the establishment of new research programs around the world. The Project has also helped develop a series of public information documents on EMF issues. FDA and the Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association (CTIA) have a formal Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) to do research on wireless phone safety. FDA provides the scientifi c oversight, obtaining input from experts in government, industry, and ER10VW 049 academic organizations. CTIA-funded research is conducted through contracts to independent investigators. The initial research will include both laboratory studies and studies of wireless phone users. The CRADA will also include a broad assessment of additional research needs in the context of the latest research developments around the world. 7. What steps can I take to reduce my exposure to radio frequency energy from my wireless phone?
If there is a risk from these products--and at this point we do not know that there is--it is probably very small. But if you are concerned about avoiding even potential risks, you can take a few simple steps to minimize your exposure to radio frequency energy (RF). Since time is a key factor in how much exposure a person receives, reducing the amount of time spent using a wireless phone will reduce RF exposure. If you must conduct extended conversations by wireless phone every day, you could place more distance between your body and the source of the RF, since the exposure level drops off dramatically with distance. For example, you could use a headset and carry the wireless phone away from your body or use a wireless phone connected to a remote antenna Again, the scientifi c data do not demonstrate that wireless phones are harmful. But if you are concerned about the RF exposure from these products, you can use measures like those described above to reduce your RF exposure from wireless phone use. 8. What about children using wireless phones?
The scientifi c evidence does not show a danger to users of wireless phones, including children and teenagers. If you want to take steps to lower exposure to radiofrequency energy (RF), the measures described above would apply to children and teenagers using wireless phones. Reducing the time of wireless phone use and increasing the distance between the user and the RF source will reduce RF exposure. Some groups sponsored by other national governments have advised that children be discouraged from using wireless phones at all. For example, the government in the United Kingdom distributed leafl ets containing such a recommendation in December 2000. They noted that no evidence exists 050 Verizon that using a wireless phone causes brain tumors or other ill eff ects. Their recommendation to limit wireless phone use by children was strictly precautionary; it was not based on scientifi c evidence that any health hazard exists. 9. Do hands-free kits for wireless phones reduce risks from exposure to RF emissions?
Since there are no known risks from exposure to RF emissions from wireless phones, there is no reason to believe that hands-free kits reduce risks. Hands-free kits can be used with wireless phones for convenience and comfort. These systems reduce the absorption of RF energy in the head because the phone, which is the source of the RF emissions, will not be placed against the head. On the other hand, if the phone is mounted against the waist or other part of the body during use, then that part of the body will absorb more RF energy. Wireless phones marketed in the U.S. are required to meet safety requirements regardless of whether they are used against the head or against the body. Either confi guration should result in compliance with the safety limit. 10. Do wireless phone accessories that claim to shield the head from RF radiation work?
Since there are no known risks from exposure to RF emissions from wireless phones, there is no reason to believe that accessories that claim to shield the head from those emissions reduce risks. Some products that claim to shield the user from RF absorption use special phone cases, while others involve nothing more than a metallic accessory attached to the phone. Studies have shown that these products generally do not work as advertised. Unlike hand-free kits, these so-called shields may interfere with proper operation of the phone. The phone may be forced to boost its power to compensate, leading to an increase in RF absorption. In February 2002, the Federal trade Commission (FTC) charged two companies that sold devices that claimed to protect wireless phone users from radiation with making false and unsubstantiated claims. According to FTC, these defendants lacked a reasonable basis to substantiate their claim. ER10VW 051 11. What about wireless phone interference with medical equipment?
Radiofrequency energy (RF) from wireless phones can interact with some electronic devices. For this reason, FDA helped develop a detailed test method to measure electromagnetic interference
(EMI) of implanted cardiac pacemakers and defi brillators from wireless telephones. This test method is now part of a standard sponsored by the Association for the Advancement of Medical instrumentation (AAMI). The fi nal draft, a joint eff ort by FDA, medical device manufacturers, and many other groups, was completed in late 2000. FDA has tested hearing aids for interference from handheld wireless phones and helped develop a voluntary standard sponsored by the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE). This standard specifi es test methods and performance requirements for hearing aids and wireless phones so that no interference occurs when a person uses a compatible phone and a compatible hearing aid at the same time. This standard was approved by the IEEE in 2000. FDA continues to monitor the use of wireless phones for possible interactions with other medical devices. The following consumer information addresses commonly asked questions about the health eff ects of wireless phones. 058 Verizon ARE WIRELESS PHONES SAFE?
Scientifi c research on the subject of wireless phones and radio frequency (RF) energy has been conducted worldwide for many years, and continues. In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) set policies and procedures for wireless phones. The FDA issued a website publication on health issues related to cell phone usage where it states, The scientifi c community at large believes that the weight of scientifi c evidence does not show an association between exposure to radiofrequency (RF) from cell phones and adverse health outcomes. Still the scientifi c community does recommend conducting additional research to address gaps in knowledge. The FCC issued its own website publication stating that [t]here is no scientifi c evidence that proves that wireless telephone usage can lead to cancer or other problems, including headaches, dizziness or memory loss. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) states that concerns about the potential health eff ects of using cellular phones ? and specifi cally the suggestion that using a cell phone may increase a persons risk of developing brain cancer ? are not supported by a growing body of research on the subject. In 1996, the FCC, working with the FDA, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and other agencies, established RF exposure safety guidelines for wireless phones in the United States. Before a wireless phone model is available for sale to the public, it must be tested by the manufacturer and certifi ed to the FCC that it does not exceed limits established by the FCC. One of these limits is ER10VW 059 expressed as a Specifi c Absorption Rate, or SAR. SAR is a measure of the rate of absorption of RF energy in the body. Tests for SAR are conducted with the phone transmitting at its highest power level in all tested frequency bands. Since 1996, the FCC has required that the SAR of handheld wireless phones not exceed 1.6 watts per kilogram, averaged over one gram of tissue. Although the SAR is determined at the highest power level, the actual SAR value of a wireless phone while operating can be less than the reported SAR value. This is because the SAR value may vary from call to call, depending on factors such as proximity to a cell site, the proximity of the phone to the body while in use, and the use of hands-free devices. You may also wish to contact the manufacturer of your phone. CAN I MINIMIZE MY RF EXPOSURE?
If you are concerned about RF, there are several simple steps you can take to minimize your RF exposure. You can, of course, reduce your talk time. You can place more distance between your body and the source of the RF, as the exposure level drops off dramatically with distance. The FDA/
FCC website states that [h]ands-free kits can be used with wireless phones for convenience and comfort. These systems reduce the absorption of RF energy in the head because the phone, which is the source of the RF emissions, will not be placed against the head. On the other hand, if the phone is mounted against the waist or other part of the body during use, then that part of the body will absorb more RF energy. Wireless phones marketed in the U.S. are required to meet safety requirements regardless of whether they are used against the head or against the body. Either confi guration should result in compliance with the safety limit. Also, if you use your wireless phone while in a car, you can use a phone with an antenna on the outside of the vehicle. You should also read and follow your wireless phone manufacturers instructions for the safe operation of your phone. 060 Verizon DO WIRELESS PHONES POSE ANY SPECIAL RISKS TO CHILDREN?
The FDA website states that [t]he scientifi c evidence does not show a danger to any users of cell phones from RF exposure, including children and teenagers. The FDA website further states that [s]ome groups sponsored by other national governments have advised that children be discouraged from using cell phones at all. For example, the Stewart Report from the United Kingdom [UK] made such a recommendation in December 2000. In this report a group of independent experts noted that no evidence exists that using a cell phone causes brain tumors or other ill eff ects. [The UKs] recommendation to limit cell phone use by children was strictly precautionary; it was not based on scientifi c evidence that any health hazard exists. Avoid potential hearing loss. Prolonged exposure to loud sounds (including music) is the most common cause of preventable hearing loss. Some scientifi c research suggests that using portable audio devices, such as portable music players and cellular telephones, at high volume settings for long durations may lead to permanent noise-induced hearing loss. This includes the use of headphones (including headsets, earbuds and Bluetooth or other wireless devices). Exposure to very loud sound has also been associated in some studies with tinnitus (a ringing in the ear), hypersensitivity to sound and distorted hearing. Individual susceptibility to noise-induced hearing loss and other potential hearing problems varies. The amount of sound produced by a portable audio device varies depending on the nature of the sound, the device, the device settings and the headphones. You should follow some commonsense recommendations when using any portable audio device:
Set the volume in a quiet environment and select the lowest volume at which you can hear adequately. When using headphones, turn the volume down if you cannot hear the people speaking near you or if the person sitting next to you can hear what you are listening to. Do not turn the volume up to block out noisy surroundings. If you choose to listen to your portable device in a noisy environment, use noise-cancelling headphones to block out background environmental noise. Limit the amount of time you listen. As the volume increases, less time is required before your hearing could be aff ected. 064 Verizon Avoid using headphones after exposure to extremely loud noises, such as rock concerts, that might cause temporary hearing loss. Temporary hearing loss might cause unsafe volumes to sound normal. Do not listen at any volume that causes you discomfort.
