With proper care and use it will become one of your most valuable classroom educational tools. Students will be able to consistently and easily understand the teacher, regardless of their location in the classroom, or competing internal or external background noise. Teachers can speak all day in their normal voice, and will suffer far fewer vocal problems and absenteeism. Numerous studies show that classrooms using sound field enjoy better student comprehen-
sion, increased student participation, better grades and fewer behavioral referrals. Read this manual carefully to become familiar with your system and to get the most out of its many features and options. 1 3850 Radium216ug wnew FCC label 4/5/04 4:51 PM Page 8 understanding sound field and its benefits without sound field

Where are the outlets located? Where are the computers and other electronic equipment? Where can you put your speaker so it's easy for you to reach, but out of the way of students and main traffic areas?
Though each classroom is different, there are some general guidelines for speaker placement:
The speaker should be at the front of the classroom at least 6 feet/1.8 meters away from where the teacher stands. Try to keep it at least six feet away from computers or other electronic equipment, since there may be interference if placed too closely together. 3 3850 Radium216ug wnew FCC label 4/5/04 4:51 PM Page 10 basic system guidelines To help ensure that you get the most from this system, we have put together a list of sug-
gested guidelines. Charge transmitter batteries every night. Our rechargeable Nickel Metal Hydride batteries last approximately 12 hours between charges, but should be recharged every night so they are ready to go in the morning. Plan on buying new NiMH batteries after 12 months of use. Alkaline batteries can also be used, and they will last approximately 15 hours. NEVER attempt to recharge alkaline batteries! This will cause damage to the transmitter units and may invalidate product warranty. Charge the 920SR receiver batteries every night. The column speaker rechargeable battery lasts approximately 5- 8 hours between charges, but should be recharged every night so its ready to go in the morning. For daily use, we recommend unplugging the power supply cord, allowing the battery to power the unit. Continuous, daily operation with the power supply cord plugged in will reduce the life of the battery significantly. Do not coil the microphone cord. Since it also acts as your antenna, coiling or wrap-
ping the cord will affect its range and may also reduce its life. Speak at a normal level the system is projecting your voice for you. 4 3850 Radium216ug wnew FCC label 4/5/04 4:51 PM Page 11 accessories included with system 2 3 or 6 10 7 or 11 12 4 8 1 5 9 5 3850 Radium216ug wnew FCC label 4/5/04 4:51 PM Page 12 1 column speaker receiver

As an added precaution, remove batteries if the equipment will not be used for several weeks. 3850 Radium216ug wnew FCC label 4/5/04 4:52 PM Page 60 code of federal regulations (United States only) 21 C.F.R., part 801.420 - important notice for prospective hearing instrument users Good health practice requires that a person with a hearing loss have a medical evaluation by a licensed physician (preferably a physician who specializes in diseases of the ear) before purchasing a hearing instrument. Licensed physicians who specialize in dis-
eases of the ear are often referred to as otolaryngolo-
gists, otologists, or otorhinolaryngologists. The pur-
pose of a medical evaluation is to assure that all med-
ically treated conditions that may affect hearing are identified and treated before a unit is purchased. Following the medical evaluation, the physician should give you a written statement which states your hearing loss has been medically evaluated, and that you may be considered a candidate for a hearing instrument. The physician should refer you to an audiologist or hearing aid dispenser, as appropriate, for a hearing instrument evaluation. The audiologist or hearing aid dispenser will conduct a hearing instrument evaluation to assess your ability to hear with and without a hearing instrument. The eval-
uation will enable the audiologist or dispenser to select and fit a unit best suited to your individual needs. If you should have reservations about your ability to adapt to amplification, you should inquire about the availability of a trial rental or purchase-option program. Many dispensers now offer programs that permit you to wear the hearing instrument for a period of time for a nominal fee after which you may decide if you want to purchase that unit. Federal law restricts the sale of hearing instruments to those individuals who have not obtained a medical evaluation from a licensed physician. Federal law per-
mits a fully informed adult to sign a waiver statement declining the medical evaluation for religious or per-
sonal beliefs that preclude consultation with a physi-
cian. The exercise of such a waiver is not in your best interest and its use is strongly discouraged. 54 3850 Radium216ug wnew FCC label 4/5/04 4:52 PM Page 61 code of federal regulations (contd) children with hearing loss In addition to seeing a physician for a medical evalua-
tion, a child with a hearing loss should be directed to an audiologist for evaluation and rehabilitation since hearing loss may cause problems in language develop-
ment and the educational and social growth of a child. An audiologist is qualified by training and experience to assist in the evaluation and rehabilitation of a child with a hearing loss. transmitter This transmitter is authorized by rule under the Low Power Radio Service (47 C.F.R. tory assistance to persons with disabilities, persons who require language translation, or persons in edu-
cational settings; health care services to the ill; law 55 enforcement tracking services under agreement with a law enforcement agency; or automated maritime telecommunications system (AMTS) network control communications. Two-way voice communications and all other types of uses not mentioned above are expressly prohibited. This device may not interfere with TV reception or federal government radar, and must accept any inter-
ference received, including interference that may cause undesired operation. IMPORTANT NOTE: To comply with FCC RF exposure compliance requirements, only use sup-
plied antenna that is sold with this transmitter. Use of any other antenna which has not been approved by the manufacturer will violate FCC rules and regulation and void the users authority to operate this device. This device and its antenna(s) must not be co-located or operating in conjunction with any other antenna or transmitter. 3850 Radium216ug wnew FCC label 4/5/04 4:52 PM Page 62 regulatory approvals receiver: part 15, subpart B Radium Receiver/Speaker 920SR Tested to comply with FCC Standards FOR HOME OR OFFICE USE This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class B digital device, pursuant to Part 15 of the FCC Rules. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmful interference in a resi-
dential installation. This equipment generates, uses and can radiate radio frequency energy and, if not installed and used in accordance with the instructions, may cause harmful interference to radio communications. However, there is no guar-
antee that interference will not occur in a particu-
lar installation. If this equipment does cause harmful interference to radio or television recep-
tion, which can be determined by turning the equipment off and on, the user is encouraged to try to correct the interference by one or more of the following measures:
Reorient or relocate the receiving antenna. Increase the separation between the equipment and receiver. Connect the equipment into an outlet on a circuit different from that to which the receiver is connected. Phonic Ear FM receivers and FM transmitters, when required, are approved by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the U.S. and Industry Canada. Other government approvals are available upon request. (Other inter-

nications and all other types of uses not men-
tioned above are expressly prohibited. 3850 Radium216ug wnew FCC label 4/5/04 4:52 PM Page 64 This device may not cause interference and must accept any interference received, including inter-
ference that may cause undesired operation. These devices may not interfere with TV recep-
tion or Federal Government radar. IC notes This Class B digital apparatus complies with Canadian ICES-003. Cet appareil numrique de la classe B est conforme la norme NMB-003 du Canada. The term "IC:" before the radio certification number only signifies that Industry of Canada technical specifications were met. If TV channel 13 is used in the area, the installer shall reduce or adjust the RF radiated power so that near-by TV channel 13 receivers do not receive radio interference from the system installed. Suggestions: A test with a TV receiver equipped with "rabbit-ear antenna" and tuned to channel 13 should be conducted, at the perimeter of the users' intended coverage area and not over-lapping other user's areas without the latter's consent. If this does not solve the problem, a channel near the 217 MHz edge and not near 216 MHz should be tried. 58 3850 Radium216ug wnew FCC label 4/5/04 4:51 PM Page 1 u.s.a. 800.227.0735, then press 5 canada 800.263.8700 international +45 3917 7101 2004 Phonic Ear Inc.
