This device features the latest innovation wireless technology and will help you build the world of wireless networking. This manual will give you step-by-step instructions of the installation to help you use the Wireless PCI Card properly. Package Contents Before you begin the installation, please check the items of your package. The package should include the following items:
One Wireless PCI Card One Free PCI Slot One CD-Based Software (Including Wireless PCI Card driver & utility and user manual.) One Quick Guide If any of the above items is missing, contact your supplier as soon as possible. Minimum System Requirements Before you begin the installation, please check the following requirements with your equipment. Pentium Based (above) IBM-compatible PC system CD-ROM driver One Free PCI Slot Windows 98/2000/ME/XP Operating System At least 500Kbytes of free disk space for utility and driver installation 6 Wireless LAN PCI Card C h a p t e r 2 Installation Procedure If you are using Windows 98/2000/ME, please read the following instructions. Before you proceed with the installation, it is important for you to know Note1: The following installation was operated under Windows 98. (Procedures will be the same for Windows 2000/ME. If you are using Windows XP, please turn to page 9.) Note2: If you have installed the Wireless PCI Card driver & utility before, please uninstall the old version first. Note3: Be sure not to insert the Wireless PCI Card before the installation. A. Execute the Setup.exe program under the Driver & Utility folder. The InstallShield Wizard will check the operating system version first. Please follow the directions after it finishes checking. 7 B. Click Next to install the driver. If you want to install this to a different folder, click Wireless LAN PCI Card Browse, and select another folder. Then click Next. C. Click Next to begin copying the files to your hard disk. D. Click Finish to complete the installation. E. You must restart the computer now. Then insert the Wireless PCI Card in your computer. Turn on the computer .Please wait for 2-3 minutes for the system to find the device. Now, the Wireless PCI Card is SUCCESSFULLY installed. Please continue to read the instructions in Chapter 3. 8 If you are using Windows XP, please read the following instructions. Before you proceed with the installation, it is important for you to know Note1: Windows XP has built-in support for wireless networking utility. Wireless LAN PCI Card Note2: Do not execute the Setup.exe under the Driver folder. A. Please insert the Wireless PCI Card in your computer. B. Turn on the computer.The system will find the device and search for its driver. Please select the Driver & Utility/Drivers/WinXP folder. Note: When you complete the installation, the Wireless Network Connection Status icon will appear on the system tray. Please right-click the icon, choose Properties to monitor the connection status .If you need to change the setup, please click Properties. Now, the Wireless PCI Card is SUCCESSFULLY installed. Please continue to read the instructions in Chapter 3. 9 Wireless LAN PCI Card C h a p t e r 3 Configuration Utility The Configuration Utility is a powerful application that helps you configure the Wireless PCI Card and monitor the statistics of the communication process. This utility can be used to change the following configuration parameters when the device is active. Please continue to read the following instructions. 3.1 General
Strength: This bar shows the signal strength level. The higher the blue bar, the more radio signal been received by the Wireless PCI Card. This indicator helps to find the most comfortable antenna/workstation position for quality network operation.
Transmit / Receive Throughput(bps): Shows transmit / receive throughput.
STA Connect Status: Shows connect status.
Device Information: Shows device information.

Transmitted Statistics: Shows transmitted statistics.
Received Statistics: Shows received statistics. 3.3 Settings Click Change to set up the necessary parameters, and click Submit after the configuration has been changed. Click Undo to restore the changed.
Operation mode: Shows the following network modes
Infrastructure Mode This operation mode requires the presence of an 802.11 Access Point. All communication is done via the Access Point.
802.11 Ad-Hoc ModeA wireless network composed of only stations and no acess point.
WLAN Service Area [SSID]: Shows the SSID of the BSS that one is willing to join.
Channel: Shows the numbers of the radio channel used for the networking. Only Access Points and Ad-Hoc nodes create the BSSID. The parameters are not active in the infrastructure operation mode.
Power Mgmt Mode: Shows the Power Management mode. There are three optional selections for this mode. 11 Wireless LAN PCI Card 11 Mbps.
Transmite Rate: Shows the Data Transfer Rate. There are 1 Mbps, 2M bps, 5.5 Mbps, Additional security can be achieved by using the WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) encryption. WEP encrypts each frame transmitted from the radio, using one of the keys entered from this panel. There are four 10 Hex digit encryption keys value available for the WEP. You can define the encryption key values of their own choice. Enable the WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) option in order to activate WEP encryption for transmissions between the stations and the Access Point. WEP is an authentication algorithm, which protects authorized Wireless LAN users against eavesdropping. 3.4 Site Survey This screen shows all the Access Points or Adapters nearby when operating in Ad-Hoc mode. Click Re-Scan to collect the BSSID and Channel information of all the wireless devices near by. If you want to connect to any device on the list, double-click the item on the list, and the adapter will automatically connect to the selected device. 12 Wireless LAN PCI Card 3.5 Profiles Manage

What is Ad-hoc An Ad-hoc integrated wireless LAN is a group of computers, each has a Wireless LAN adapter, Connected as an independent wireless LAN. Ad hoc wireless LAN is applicable at a departmental scale for a branch or SOHO operation.
What is Infrastructure An integrated wireless and wireless and wired LAN is called an Infrastructure configuration. Infrastructure is applicable to enterprise scale for wireless access to central database, or wireless application for mobile workers.
What is BSS ID
What is WEP A specific Ad hoc LAN is called a Basic Service Set (BSS). Computers in a BSS must be configured with the same BSS ID. WEP is Wired Equivalent Privacy, a data privacy mechanism based on a 40 bit shared key algorithm, as described in the IEEE 802 .11 standard.

What is DSSSWhat is FHSSAnd what are their differences Frequency-hopping spread-spectrum (FHSS) uses a narrowband carrier that changes frequency in a pattern that is known to both transmitter and receiver. Properly synchronized, the net effect is to maintain a single logical channel. To an unintended receiver, FHSS appears to be short-duration impulse noise. Direct-sequence spread-
spectrum (DSSS) generates a redundant bit pattern for each bit to be transmitted. This bit pattern is called a chip (or chipping code). The longer the chip is, the greater the probability that the original data can be recovered. Even if one or more bits in the chip are damaged during transmission, statistical techniques embedded in the radio can recover the original data without-the need for retransmission. To an unintended receiver, DSSS appears as low power wideband noise and is rejected (ignored) by most narrowband receivers.
What is Spread Spectrum Spread Spectrum technology is a wideband radio frequency technique developed by the military for use in reliable, secure, mission-critical communication systems. It is designed to trade off bandwidth efficiency for reliability, integrity, and security. In other words, more bandwidth is consumed than in the case of narrowband transmission, but the trade off produces a signal that is, in effect, louder and thus easier to detect, provided that the receiver knows the parameters of the spread-spectrum signal being broadcast. If a receiver is not tuned to the right frequency, a spread spectrum signal looks like background noise. There are two main alternatives, Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) and Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS). 16
