The Sensus AutoGun Part One The Sensus AutoGun The Model 4090 AutoGun is used for reading Sensus TouchRead@ System encoders, remotes, TR/PL pit lid modules, and similar compatible touch type reading units from other manu-
facturers. If the AutoGun is being used in Stand Alone reading mode, the data for up to 99 readings remains stored in its memory until the AutoGun is linked to an AutoRead HandHeld Device
(AR-HHD). If the AutoGun is being used in conjunction with the AR-HHD while reading and the two units are already linked, the data is automatically forwarded to the AR-HHD as the meters are being read. Whether the AutoGun and AR-HHD are communicating via a short range radio link or are physically connected using a hard-
wire cord, the two units must nevertheless be virtually linked instructed to communicate with each other (via the built-in soft-
ware menus) by the user. The linking procedure is described in Section, Linking and Relinking. The AutoGun includes a low power radio frequency (RF) signal transceiver for communicating with an AR-HHD. The'low power RF signal range is approximately 30 feet, so a connecting cord between the two is therefore not normally needed. oe The Model 4090 AutoGun can easily be converted to a PitProbe wand for reading TouchPads mounted in meter pit or vauit fids. PartOne 1.1 a ae A PitProbe extension (showm at center) can be added to an AutoRead HandHeld Device by removing the TouchPad face unit which is then installed anto the end of the probe. PartOne 1.2 However, there may be situations where outside radio signal inter-
ference may create communications problems between the two units, or the meter reader may prefer using a cord. Communications ports and for optional corded use are therefore included in the design. Charging The AutoGun is equipped with memory and soft-
ware for collecting, storing, and transferring reading data collected from system compatible meters. Whether used with a cord or cord-
less, the AutoGun relies on its own built-in power supply which must be periodically recharged using a charging cable connected to an AutoRead communications/charging stand. See Appendix X of this manual for charging details. Sleep Mode To help conserve battery power, the AutoGun is designed to go into a sleep mode after 30 seconds of inactivity. The sleep mode can be terminated by briefly pressing and releas-
ing any of the AutoGun's buttons or trigger. CAUTION - A quick press and release of the button or trigger is all that is needed to terminate the sleep mode. Holding down a but-
ton or trigger too long will return the gun from its sleep mode and also activate additional actions, such as unintentional scrolling if the UP or DOWN arrow button is used, or the unit may attempt to take a reading if the trigger is used. For more information, see Control Use Conventions/Terms later in this section. PitProbe Adapter and TouchPad Riser Ring By adding an optional PitProbe telescoping extension unit, the AutoGun can be converted to a wand type device for touch based meter reading of modules mounted in meter box pits and vault lids, such as Sensus TR/PL modules. The telescoping extension unit can be adjusted to a length preferred by the meter reader. The Sensus AutoGun To add the PitProbe unit, first remove the TouchPad face unit from the front of the AutoGun. This is done by unscrewing the knurled gray plastic retaining ring which holds the TouchPad face unit in place. With the front of the AutoGun facing you, tun the retaining ring counter-clockwise until the ring is completely unscrewed and loose. Next, unplug the TouchPad face unit by gently pulling it out-
ward, away from the gun. Place the TouchPad face unit aside. The upper end of the PitProbe unit has a matching connector with retaining ring which can now be plugged in to the front of the AutoGun, The retaining ring is then screwed on, turning it clock-
wise to hold the PitProbe telescoping unit in place. The TouchPad face unit is then installed onto the bottom end of the PitProbe using the same method. The AutoGun is now ready for use as a PitProbe reading wand. The PitProbe extension can be removed from the AutoGun by reversing these steps. The TouchPad face unit of the AutoGun is equipped with a riser ring which can easily be adjusted for reading recessed touch units, such as those used for the Sensus TR/PL pit lid module or other large diameter touch pads. The riser ring can be extended to make the gun easier to use when reading standard TouchRead remotes. The riser ring is adjusted by twisting it clockwise or counter-clock-
wise until the pre-set position notch positions snap to hold it at a given position. Belt-clip The AutoGun is equipped with hanger clips enabling it to be attached to the AR-HHD carrier belt when not in use or needed. The carrier belt system is described in Appendix X of this manual. Ports The AutoGun has two ports for connecting cables. One is for the charging cable and is located on the back side of the lower pistol grip handle. The other port is for the communications cord, used for hard wiring the gun to an AR-HHD and is located on the bottom (under side) of the gun's handle.
Toucl Face unit Riser ring can be adjusted for reading recessed touch-pads or standard Sensus TouchPads. PartOne 1.3
