The device also supports 2G / 3G roaming. Accessories A hardware development kit is available for AirPrime M.2 modules. The host must provide safe and continuous power (via battery or a regulated power supply) at all times; the module does not have an independent power supply, or protection circuits to guard against electrical issues. Use any of the following (or compatible) 2x2 mm RF receptacle connectors to attach antennas to the modules connection points
Match coaxial connections between the module and the antenna to 50 .
Minimize RF cable losses to the antenna; the recommended maximum cable
loss for antenna cabling is 0.5 dB. To ensure best thermal performance, if possible use the mounting hole to attach (ground) the device to a metal chassis. Note: If the antenna connection is shorted or open, the modem will not sustain permanent damage. Shielding The module is fully shielded to protect against EMI and must not be removed. 12 Proprietary and Confidential - Contents subject to change 4112880 RF Specifications Antenna and cabling When selecting the antenna and cable, it is critical to RF performance to match antenna gain and cable loss. Choosing the correct antenna and cabling When matching antennas and cabling:
The antenna (and associated circuitry) should have a nominal impedance of 50 with a return loss of better than 10 dB across each frequency band of operation. The system gain value affects both radiated power and regulatory (FCC, IC, CE, etc.) test results. Designing custom antennas Consider the following points when designing custom antennas:
A skilled RF engineer should do the development to ensure that the RF performance is maintained. If both UMTS and CDMA modules will be installed in the same platform, you may want to develop separate antennas for maximum performance. Determining the antennas location When deciding where to put the antennas:
Antenna location may affect RF performance. Although the module is shielded to prevent interference in most applications, the placement of the antenna is still very important if the host device is insufficiently shielded, high levels of broadband or spurious noise can degrade the modules perfor-
mance. Connecting cables between the module and the antenna must have 50 impedance. If the impedance of the module is mismatched, RF performance is reduced significantly. Antenna cables should be routed, if possible, away from noise sources
(switching power supplies, LCD assemblies, etc.). If the cables are near the noise sources, the noise may be coupled into the RF cable and into the antenna. Disabling the diversity antenna
For LTE / UMTS bands, use the AT command !RXDEN=0 to disable receive diversity or !RXDEN=1 to enable receive diversity. For CDMA bands, use the AT command !DIVERSITY to enable or disable receive diversity.
Note: A diversity antenna is used to improve connection quality and reliability through redundancy. Because two antennas may experience difference interference effects (signal distortion, delay, etc.), when one antenna receives a degraded signal, the other may not be similarly affected. Prevent noise leakage by establishing a very good ground connection to the module through the host connector. Connect to system ground using the modules mounting hole.
Minimize ground noise leakage into the RF. Depending on the host board design, noise could potentially be coupled to the module from the host board. This is mainly an issue for host designs that have signals traveling along the length of the module, or circuitry operating at both ends of the module interconnects. Interference and sensitivity Several interference sources can affect the modules RF performance
(RF desense). Common sources include power supply noise and device-
generated RF. RF desense can be addressed through a combination of mitigation techniques
(Methods to mitigate decreased Rx performance on page 15) and radiated sensitivity measurement (Radiated sensitivity measurement on page 16). Note: The EM7355 is based on ZIF (Zero Intermediate Frequency) technologies. When performing EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility) tests, there are no IF (Intermediate Frequency) components from the module to consider. Interference from other wireless devices Wireless devices operating inside the host device can cause interference that affects the module. To determine the most suitable locations for antennas on your host device, evaluate each wireless devices radio system, considering the following:
Any harmonics, sub-harmonics, or cross-products of signals generated by wireless devices that fall in the modules Rx range may cause spurious response, resulting in decreased Rx performance. The Tx power and corresponding broadband noise of other wireless devices may overload or increase the noise floor of the modules receiver, resulting in Rx desense.
The severity of this interference depends on the closeness of the other antennas to the modules antenna. To determine suitable locations for each wireless devices antenna, thoroughly evaluate your host devices design. Host-generated RF interference All electronic computing devices generate RF interference that can negatively affect the receive sensitivity of the module. 14 Proprietary and Confidential - Contents subject to change 4112880 RF Specifications Display panel and display drivers Switching-mode power supplies Proximity of host electronics to the antenna in wireless devices can contribute to decreased Rx performance. Components that are most likely to cause this include:
Microprocessor and memory
Device-generated RF interference The module can cause interference with other devices. Wireless devices such as AirPrime embedded modules transmit in bursts (pulse transients) for set durations
(RF burst frequencies). Hearing aids and speakers convert these burst frequencies into audible frequencies, resulting in audible noise. Methods to mitigate decreased Rx performance It is important to investigate sources of localized interference early in the design cycle. To reduce the effect of device-generated RF on Rx performance:
Put the antenna as far as possible from sources of interference. The drawback is that the module may be less convenient to use. Shield the host device. The module itself is well shielded to avoid external interference. However, the antenna cannot be shielded for obvious reasons. In most instances, it is necessary to employ shielding on the components of the host device (such as the main processor and parallel bus) that have the highest RF emissions. Filter out unwanted high-order harmonic energy by using discrete filtering on low frequency lines. Form shielding layers around high-speed clock traces by using multi-layer PCBs. Route antenna cables away from noise sources.
Radiated Spurious Emissions (RSE) When designing an antenna for use with AirPrime embedded modules, the host device with an AirPrime embedded module must satisfy the radiated spurious emission (RSE) test cases described in:
(CDMA) Refer to CDMA standards for receive-only mode, and local regulatory bodies for transmit mode (transmitter is operating). CE/ETSI EN 301 908 (WCDMA), test numbers 5.3.1 (Radiated Emissions
(UE)) CE/ETSI EN 301 511 (GSM), test 5.2.16 (Radiated Spurious Emissions - MS allocated a channel). This test uses the procedure and requirement outlined in 3GPP 51.010 (GSM) section 12.2.1 of the same test name.
Note that antenna impedance affects radiated emissions, which must be compared against the conducted 50-ohm emissions baseline. (AirPrime embedded modules meet the 50-ohm conducted emissions requirement.) Radiated sensitivity measurement A wireless host device contains many noise sources that contribute to a reduction in Rx performance. To determine the extent of any receiver performance desensitization due to self-
generated noise in the host device, over-the-air (OTA) or radiated testing is required. depots, and chemical plants Near medical equipment, life support equipment, or any equipment which may be susceptible to any form of radio interference. In such areas, the EM7355 modem MUST BE POWERED OFF. Otherwise, the EM7355 modem can transmit signals that could interfere with this equipment. In an aircraft, the EM7355 modem MUST BE POWERED OFF. Otherwise, the EM7355 modem can transmit signals that could interfere with various onboard systems and may be dangerous to the operation of the aircraft or disrupt the cellular network. Use of a cellular phone in an aircraft is illegal in some jurisdictions. Failure to observe this instruction may lead to suspension or denial of cellular telephone services to the offender, or legal action or both. Some airlines may permit the use of cellular phones while the aircraft is on the ground and the door is open. The EM7355 modem may be used normally at this time. Important compliance information for North American users Note: Details are preliminary and subject to change. The EM7355 modem has been granted modular approval for mobile applications. Integrators may use the EM7355 modem in their final products without additional FCC / IC (Industry Canada) certification if they meet the following conditions. Otherwise, additional FCC / IC approvals must be obtained. 1. At least 20 cm separation distance between the antenna and the users body must be maintained at all times. 2. To comply with FCC / IC regulations limiting both maximum RF output power and human exposure to RF radiation, the maximum antenna gain including cable loss in a mobile-only exposure condition must not exceed:

regulatory_compliance WARNING: The AC adapter works with electrical outlets worldwide. However, power connectors and power strips vary among countries. Using an incompatible cable or improperly connecting the cable to the power strip or electrical outlet may cause fire or equipment damage. CAUTION: When you disconnect the AC adapter cable from the computer, grasp the connector, not the cable itself, and pull firmly but gently to avoid damaging the cable. When you wrap the AC adapter cable, ensure that you follow the angle of the connector on the AC adapter to avoid damaging the cable. NOTE: Some devices may not be included if you did not order them. 1. Connect the AC adapter to the AC adapter connector on the computer and to the electrical outlet. Figure 1. AC Adapter 2. Power Button NOTE: It is recommended that you turn on and shut down your computer at least once before you install any cards or connect the computer to a docking device or other external device, such as a printer. 8 4 Removing and Installing Components This section provides detailed information on how to remove or install the components from your computer. Opening the Press-Latch Doors There are six press-latch doors. Three on the back and two on the right side panel. An extra press-latch door is also present on the left side of the computer. To open the press-latch doors:
a. Left and right side press-latch doors: Slide the latch towards the back of the computer to lock and towards the front to unlock. b. Back press-latch door: Slide the latch to the right to lock and to the left to unlock. c. Press down the latch and pull the door in the direction away from the computer. Closing the Press-Latch Doors 1. Rotate the door back in position, towards the computer. 2. Engage the lock by sliding until the lock symbol is visible. Removing the Battery WARNING: Using an incompatible battery may increase the risk of fire or explosion. Replace the battery only with a compatible battery purchased from Dell. The battery is designed to work with your Dell computer. Do not use a battery from other computers with your computer. WARNING: Before removing or replacing the battery, turn off the computer, disconnect the AC adapter from the electrical outlet and the computer, disconnect the modem from the wall connector and computer, and remove any other external cables from the computer. WARNING: Not for use in hazardous locations. See installation instructions. WARNING: To prevent ignition in a hazardous atmosphere, batteries must only be changed or charged in an area known to be non-hazardous. 9 NOTE: The battery cannot be installed or removed with the optional accessory handle installed. The handle must be removed first (if present). 1. Unlock the battery release latch by pushing it upwards. 2. 3. Remove the battery from the computer. Slide the latch to the right to release the battery. Installing the Battery Slide the battery into its slot. 1. 2. Push the battery latch down to lock it. Removing the Hard Drive To open the hard drive latch door, push the latch button to the left (if locked). 1. 2. Open the hard-drive latch door by pushing the latch down. 3. Pull the hard drive outwards using the pull-tab and remove it from the computer. Installing the Hard Drive To secure the hard drive, push the hard drive into its compartment. 1. 2. Close and lock the hard-drive latch door. NOTE: Keep the hard drive pull-tab clear of the doors before closing. 10 5 Working on Your Computer This section provides information about Backlit Keyboard, Stealth Mode, Function keys and how to convert your computer to notebook and tablets modes. Using the Backlit Keyboard The Latitude rugged series comes equipped with a backlit keyboard that can be customized. The system comes with the following colors enabled:

Blue Alternatively, the system can be configured with 2 additional custom colors in the System Setup (BIOS) Turning the Keyboard Backlight On/Off or Adjusting Brightness 1. Press <Fn> + < F10> to initialize the keyboard backlight switch. NOTE: <Fn> key is not needed if function key <Fn> lock is activated. NOTE: The first use of the above key combination turns on the backlight to its lowest setting. Additional pressing of the key combinations cycle the brightness settings through 25%, 50%,75%
and 100% . 2. Cycle through the key combination to either adjust the brightness or completely turn off the keyboard backlight. 11 Changing the Keyboard Backlight Color To change the keyboard backlight color:
Press <FN> + < C> keys to cycle through the available backlight colors. 1. 2. White, Red, Green and Blue are active by default; up to two custom colors can be added to the cycle in the System Setup (BIOS). Customizing the Backlit Keyboard in System Setup (BIOS) Power off the computer. 1. 2. Power on the computer and at the Dell logo, tap the <F2> key repeatedly to bring up the system 3. 4. setup menu. Expand and open the System Configuration menu. Select RGB Keyboard Backlight. You can enable/disable the standard colors (White, Red, Green and Blue). 5. To set a custom RGB value, use the input boxes on the right side of the screen. 6. Click Apply changes and click Exit close the system setup. Function <Fn> Key Lock Features NOTE: The keyboard has Function key <Fn> lock capability. Press the <Fn> + <Esc> keys again to deactivate the function lock feature. The function keys return to their default actions. Turning Stealth Mode On/Off 1. Press the <Fn> + <F7> key combination (<Fn> key not needed if Fn lock is activated) to turn on stealth mode. NOTE: Stealth mode is a secondary function of the <F7> key. The key can be used to perform other functions on the computer when not used with the <Fn> key to activate stealth mode. 2. All the lights and sounds are turned off. 3. Repeat the steps, flipping the display in the opposite direction, to bring the computer back to notebook mode. 15 Quick Disconnect (QD) Connector Latitude fully rugged products come equipped with receptacles for QD (Quick-Disconnect) connectors at the corners. These receptacles allow the connection of optional accessories such as shoulder straps. 6 Installing a QD connector 1. Align the QD connector to the receptacle on the corner of the computer. 2. Match coaxial connections between the module and the antenna to 50 .
Minimize RF cable losses to the antenna; the recommended maximum cable
loss for antenna cabling is 0.5 dB. To ensure best thermal performance, if possible use the mounting hole to attach (ground) the device to a metal chassis. Note: If the antenna connection is shorted or open, the modem will not sustain permanent damage. Shielding The module is fully shielded to protect against EMI and must not be removed. 12 Proprietary and Confidential - Contents subject to change 4112880 RF Specifications Antenna and cabling When selecting the antenna and cable, it is critical to RF performance to match antenna gain and cable loss. Choosing the correct antenna and cabling When matching antennas and cabling:
The antenna (and associated circuitry) should have a nominal impedance of 50 with a return loss of better than 10 dB across each frequency band of operation. The system gain value affects both radiated power and regulatory (FCC, IC, CE, etc.) test results. Designing custom antennas Consider the following points when designing custom antennas:
A skilled RF engineer should do the development to ensure that the RF performance is maintained. If both UMTS and CDMA modules will be installed in the same platform, you may want to develop separate antennas for maximum performance. Determining the antennas location When deciding where to put the antennas:
Antenna location may affect RF performance. Although the module is shielded to prevent interference in most applications, the placement of the antenna is still very important if the host device is insufficiently shielded, high levels of broadband or spurious noise can degrade the modules perfor-
mance. Connecting cables between the module and the antenna must have 50 impedance. If the impedance of the module is mismatched, RF performance is reduced significantly. Antenna cables should be routed, if possible, away from noise sources
(switching power supplies, LCD assemblies, etc.). If the cables are near the noise sources, the noise may be coupled into the RF cable and into the antenna. Disabling the diversity antenna
For LTE / UMTS bands, use the AT command !RXDEN=0 to disable receive diversity or !RXDEN=1 to enable receive diversity. For CDMA bands, use the AT command !DIVERSITY to enable or disable receive diversity.
Note: A diversity antenna is used to improve connection quality and reliability through redundancy. Because two antennas may experience difference interference effects (signal distortion, delay, etc.), when one antenna receives a degraded signal, the other may not be similarly affected. Prevent noise leakage by establishing a very good ground connection to the module through the host connector. Connect to system ground using the modules mounting hole.
Minimize ground noise leakage into the RF. Depending on the host board design, noise could potentially be coupled to the module from the host board. This is mainly an issue for host designs that have signals traveling along the length of the module, or circuitry operating at both ends of the module interconnects. Interference and sensitivity Several interference sources can affect the modules RF performance
(RF desense). Common sources include power supply noise and device-
generated RF. RF desense can be addressed through a combination of mitigation techniques
(Methods to mitigate decreased Rx performance on page 15) and radiated sensitivity measurement (Radiated sensitivity measurement on page 16). Note: The EM7355 is based on ZIF (Zero Intermediate Frequency) technologies. When performing EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility) tests, there are no IF (Intermediate Frequency) components from the module to consider. Interference from other wireless devices Wireless devices operating inside the host device can cause interference that affects the module. To determine the most suitable locations for antennas on your host device, evaluate each wireless devices radio system, considering the following:
Any harmonics, sub-harmonics, or cross-products of signals generated by wireless devices that fall in the modules Rx range may cause spurious response, resulting in decreased Rx performance. The Tx power and corresponding broadband noise of other wireless devices may overload or increase the noise floor of the modules receiver, resulting in Rx desense.
The severity of this interference depends on the closeness of the other antennas to the modules antenna. To determine suitable locations for each wireless devices antenna, thoroughly evaluate your host devices design. Host-generated RF interference All electronic computing devices generate RF interference that can negatively affect the receive sensitivity of the module. 14 Proprietary and Confidential - Contents subject to change 4112880 RF Specifications Display panel and display drivers Switching-mode power supplies Proximity of host electronics to the antenna in wireless devices can contribute to decreased Rx performance. Components that are most likely to cause this include:
Microprocessor and memory
Device-generated RF interference The module can cause interference with other devices. Wireless devices such as AirPrime embedded modules transmit in bursts (pulse transients) for set durations
(RF burst frequencies). Hearing aids and speakers convert these burst frequencies into audible frequencies, resulting in audible noise. Methods to mitigate decreased Rx performance It is important to investigate sources of localized interference early in the design cycle. To reduce the effect of device-generated RF on Rx performance:
Put the antenna as far as possible from sources of interference. The drawback is that the module may be less convenient to use. Shield the host device. The module itself is well shielded to avoid external interference. However, the antenna cannot be shielded for obvious reasons. In most instances, it is necessary to employ shielding on the components of the host device (such as the main processor and parallel bus) that have the highest RF emissions. Filter out unwanted high-order harmonic energy by using discrete filtering on low frequency lines. Form shielding layers around high-speed clock traces by using multi-layer PCBs. Route antenna cables away from noise sources.
Radiated Spurious Emissions (RSE) When designing an antenna for use with AirPrime embedded modules, the host device with an AirPrime embedded module must satisfy the radiated spurious emission (RSE) test cases described in:
(CDMA) Refer to CDMA standards for receive-only mode, and local regulatory bodies for transmit mode (transmitter is operating). CE/ETSI EN 301 908 (WCDMA), test numbers 5.3.1 (Radiated Emissions
(UE)) CE/ETSI EN 301 511 (GSM), test 5.2.16 (Radiated Spurious Emissions - MS allocated a channel). This test uses the procedure and requirement outlined in 3GPP 51.010 (GSM) section 12.2.1 of the same test name.
Note that antenna impedance affects radiated emissions, which must be compared against the conducted 50-ohm emissions baseline. (AirPrime embedded modules meet the 50-ohm conducted emissions requirement.) Radiated sensitivity measurement A wireless host device contains many noise sources that contribute to a reduction in Rx performance. When setting up the equipment for use:
Place the equipment on a hard, level surface. Do not stack the equipment, place it in an enclosed space, or otherwise install it where it is subject to heated air. The equipment should have least 10.2 cm (4 inches) of clearance on all vented sides to permit the airflow required for proper ventilation. Restricting airflow can damage the equipment or cause overheating. If your device includes a modem, the cable used with the modem should be manufactured with a minimum wire size of 26 American Wire Gauge (AWG) and an FCC compliant RJ11 modular plug. WARNING: Do not operate your equipment with any cover(s) (including computer covers, bezels, filler brackets, front-panel inserts, and so on) removed. Do not use your equipment in a wet environment. Protect equipment from liquid intrusion. Do not use damaged equipment, including exposed, frayed, or damaged power cords. Do not push any objects into the air vents or openings of your equipment. Doing so can cause fire or electric shock by shorting out interior components. Plaats de apparatuur op een hard, gelijkmatig oppervlak. Stapel geen apparatuur op elkaar, stel deze niet in een besloten ruimte op en installeer deze niet op locaties waar deze aan verwarmde lucht wordt blootgesteld. Aanalle zijden van de apparatuur met ventilatiegaten moet minimaal 10,2 cm vrije ruimte aanwezig zijn om de voor de juiste ventilatie vereiste luchtcirculatie te bieden. Een beperking van de luchtstroom kan ertoe leiden dat de apparatuur beschadigd of oververhit raakt. Als uw apparaat een modem bevat, moet de kabel die bij het modem gebruikt wordt een minimum draadgrootte hebben van 26 AWG (American Wire Gauge - 0.40386mm) en voorzien zijn van een RJ11 modulaire plug die aan de standaard FCC voldoet.
