1. Press MENU/SEL when the handset is not in use. 2. Press CID or DIR to select a handset feature menu, then press MENU/SEL to enter that menu. To return to the idle mode, press OFF/CLEAR. DIRECTORY allows you to store and search for names and numbers

(page 21). SPEED DIAL allows you to store or dial a number in a speed dial location (page 22). RINGER allows you to set the ringer

(page 11). HOME AREA CODE LANGUAGE 4 Getting started Telephone base & charger installation The telephone base can be placed on a flat surface or vertically mounted on the wall (page 7). For optimum range and better reception, place the telephone base in a central and open location. Avoid placing the telephone base too close to:

Communication devices such as: personal computers, computer routers, television sets, VCRs, wireless routers (wireless broadband, wi-fi, or 802.11) or other cordless telephones. Excessive heat sources. Noise sources such as a window with traffic outside, motors, microwave ovens, refrigerators, or fluorescent lighting. Excessive dust sources such as a workshop or garage. Excessive moisture. Extremely low temperature. Mechanical vibration or shock such as on top of the washing machine or work bench. 5

Getting started Telephone base & charger installation If you subscribe to high-speed Internet service (Digital Subscriber Line - DSL) through your telephone lines, you must install a DSL filter between the telephone base and the telephone wall jack. The filter will prevent noise and caller ID problems caused by DSL interference. Please contact your DSL service provider for more information about DSL filters. Install the telephone base and charger as shown below. Telephone base installation 1. Plug the small end of the power adapter into the power jack on the underside of the telephone base. 5. Plug the large end of the power adapter into an electrical outlet not connected to a wall switch. Charger installation 2. Plug one end of the telephone line cord into the telephone jack on the underside of the telephone base. 3. Route cords through slots. DSL filter

(available from your DSL Internet provider) Telephone line cord 4. Plug the other end of the telephone line cord into a telephone jack. Plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet not connected to a wall switch. NOTES:

This power adapter is intended to be correctly oriented in a vertical or floor mount position. The prongs are not designed to hold the plug in place if it is plugged into a ceiling, under-

the-table or cabinet outlet. 6 Getting started Installation options The telephone base is designed for both desktop installation and wall mount installation. If wall mounting is desired, a telephone outlet wall mounting plate with mounting studs is required. This mounting plate is available for purchase at many hardware or consumer electronics retailers and may require professional installation. Desktop to wall mount installation 1. Plug the telephone line cord and power adapter into the telephone base. Bundle the telephone line cord and route cords through the slots, then secure with a twist tie. 2. Plug the power adapter and telephone line cord into the wall outlets, then align the mounting studs on the telephone outlet plate with the mounting holes on the telephone base. 3. Place the telephone base mounting holes just above the mounting studs, then slide the telephone base down until it is secure. 1 2 7 Getting started Installation options Wall mount to desktop installation To change the telephone base from the wall mount position to desktop position, make sure that you first unplug the power adapter and telephone line cord from the wall outlets before you begin. 1. Slide the telephone base upwards, then pull the telephone base away from the wall off of the mounting studs. 1 2 2. Unplug the power adapter and the telephone line cord from the electrical outlet and the telephone jack. 3. Plug the telephone line cord into the telephone base and telephone wall jack, then plug the power adapter plug into the telephone base and a power outlet not connected to a wall switch. 8 Getting started Battery installation & charging Install the battery as shown below. After installing the battery, you can make and receive short calls, but replace the handset in the telephone base or charger when not in use. For optimal performance, charge the handset battery for at least 16 hours before use. When fully charged, the handset battery provides approximately five hours of talk time or six days of standby time. If the handset has not been used for a long time or if the battery inside is completely depleted, put it on the telephone base or charger for recharging. Step 1 Insert the battery plug as indicated, making sure that it matches the color-coded label inside the battery compartment. Step 2 Place the battery and wires inside the compartment. Step 3 Slide the battery compartment cover up until it clicks. Step 4 Charge the handset, by placing the handset face up in the telephone base. The CHARGE light on the handset should be on as soon as the handset is properly placed on the telephone base. CHARGE light MENU / SEL TRANSFER REMOVE ANNC. RECORD 9 Getting started Battery installation & charging LOW BATTERY 10:08AM 02/14 Low battery indicator Return the handset to the telephone base or charger to recharge when this symbol flashes and the handset beeps or when the handset screen displays LOW BATTERY. To replace the battery, press the tab and slide the battery compartment cover downwards. Lift out the old battery and disconnect it from the handset. Follow the instructions on the previous page to install and charge the new battery. The ringer sound, ringer volume, date and time, dial mode, home area code and language must be programmed separately for each cordless handset. To customize how the handset works:

1. Press MENU/SEL in the idle mode to enter the handset main menu. 2. Use CID or DIR feature. to scroll to the desired 3. Press MENU/SEL to select the feature. To stop at any time, press OFF/CLEAR. Language To change the language to Espanol, or Francais:

1. Press MENU/SEL in the idle mode to enter the LANGUAGE handset main menu. 2. Press CID or DIR until the screen displays LANGUAGE. Press MENU/SEL. The current setting is flashing. 3. Press 4. You may also mount your telephone onto a standard telephone wall plate. Wall mounting bracket installation:

To prepare the telephone base for wall mountng, you wll need to remove the bracket f t s currently attached for desktop use. Press on the tabs located on the legs of the bracket to loosen, then lft the bracket up and away from the telephone base. 1. Frst, nsert the lower porton tabs of the mountng bracket nto the lower grooves n the telephone base, then snap the upper porton tabs of the mountng bracket nto place. Charge the battery n the handset for at least 16 hours. Remove and re-nsert the battery. If that stll does not work, t may be necessary to purchase a new battery. Place the handset n the telephone base or charger for rechargng. Although the call log entres you receve have 10 dgts, (the area code plus the seven-dgt number,) n some areas, you may need to dal only seven dgts, or a 1 plus the seven dgts, or a 1 plus the area code plus the seven dgts. You can change the number of dgts that you dal or store from the call log. Whle revewng the call log, press # repeatedly to dsplay these dalng optons for local and long dstance numbers before dalng or savng the telephone number. Make sure the answerng system s on. When the answerng system s on, the red lght on the ANS ON/OFF key should be lt. If toll saver s actvated, the number of rngs changes to two when there are new messages watng (see page 34). If the memory s full or f the answerng system s off, the system wll answer after ten rngs. In some cases, the answerng system wll be affected by the rngng system used by the local telephone company. www.vtechphones.com 55 A p p e n d x i Troubleshooting Problem The answerng system does not record messages. The messages on the answerng system are

ncomplete. The messages on the system are very difficult to hear. The answerng system does not respond to remote commands. Suggestion Make sure the answerng system s on. Make sure the memory of the answerng system s not full. If a caller leaves a very long message, part of t may be lost when the system dsconnects the call after four mnutes. If the caller pauses for more than five consecutive seconds, the system stops recording and dsconnects the call. If the memory on the system becomes full durng a message, the system stops recordng and dsconnects the call. If the callers voce s very soft, the system may stop recordng and dsconnect the call. Press VOL+ on the telephone base to ncrease the speaker volume. Make sure your remote access code s correct (page 43). Make sure you are callng from a touch-tone telephone. When dalng a number, there should be tones. If there are clcks, then t s not a touch-tone telephone and cannot actvate the answerng system. The answerng system may not detect the remote access code when the announcement s playng. Wat untl the announcement s over before enterng the code. Common cure for electronc equpment Make sure the power cord s securely plugged nto the telephone base. Plug the unt nto a dfferent workng electrcal outlet not controlled by a wall swtch. Move the handset closer to the telephone base. It may be out of range. Reset the telephone base by unpluggng the unts electrcal power. Wat for 15 seconds and plug t back n agan. Allow up to one mnute for the handset and the telephone base to synchronze. Other electronc products can cause nterference to your cordless telephone. Try nstallng your telephone as far away from these electronc devces as possble: wreless routers, rados, rado towers, pager towers, cellular telephones, ntercoms, room montors, televsons, personal computers, ktchen applances and other cordless telephones. If the unt s not respondng normally, try puttng the handset n the telephone base or the charger(s). If t does not seem to respond, try the followng (n the order lsted):

Dsconnect the power to the telephone base. Dsconnect the battery on the handset. Wat a few mnutes before connectng the power to the telephone base. If this applies to you, you should enter your own area code into the telephone as the home area code. When changing the volume level, the new setting is saved. Call waiting If you subscribe to call waiting service with your local telephone company, there will be a beep if there is an incoming call while you are already on a call. Press PHONE/FLASH to put your current call on hold and take the new call. Press PHONE/FLASH anytime to switch back and forth between calls. For more information on caller ID, see page 26. Mute Press MUTE to silence the microphone. When mute is on, MIC MUTED will show on the handset screen temporarily. You will be able to hear the caller, but the caller can not hear you until you press MUTE again to resume your conversation. When the mute function is turned off, MIC ON will show temporar-

ily on the handset screen. Temporary tone dialing If dial pulse (rotary) is selected, you can switch to touch tone dialing during a call by pressing *. This can be useful if it is necessary to send tone signals for access to answering systems or long-

distance services. After you hang up or press PHONE/FLASH (to receive a call waiting call), the telephone auto-

matically returns to dial pulse (rotary) service. Channel selection During a call, if you hear clicks and pops, or if the speech sometimes fades, press CHAN/REMOVE on the handset to scan for a clearer radio channel between cordless handset and base. 16 Directory Memory capacity The handset directory can store up to 30 entries

(including nine speed dial entries). Each entry can contain a number up to 24 digits, and a name up to 14 characters. A convenient search feature can help you find and dial numbers quickly (page 21). Timeouts and error messages If you pause for too long while creating an entry, the procedure will time out and you will have to begin again. If all memory locations are in use, the screen will display MEMORY FULL. You will not be able to store a new number until an existing one is deleted. tem announces the day and time when the mes-

sage was received. Before using the answering system, follow the steps on the left to set the day, time and year, so that messages are dated correctly. If the clock is not set, before new messages are recorded, the system will announce "Time and day not set"

before each message is played back. The system uses voice prompts to guide you. Each time you press SKIP or REPEAT , the day, hour, minute or year increases or decreases by one. When you hear the correct setting, press CLOCK to move to the next setting. To check day and time You can press CLOCK at any time to hear the cur-

Make sure the telephone line cord is plugged firmly into the telephone base and the modular wall jack. Unplug the telephones electrical power. Wait for approx-

imately 15 seconds, then plug it back in. Allow up to one minute for the cordless handset and base to synchronize. Charge the battery in the cordless handset for at least 16 hours. Remove and re-insert the battery. If that still does not work, it may be necessary to purchase a new battery. Disconnect the telephone base from the modular jack and plug in a working telephone. If this telephone does not work, the problem is probably in the wiring or the local service. Call the local telephone company. Place the handset in the base for recharging. Remove and re-install the battery and use it normally until fully discharged, then recharge the handset on the telephone base for 16 hours. If the above measures do not correct the problem, the battery may need to be replaced. Make sure the handset is placed in the telephone base correctly. The CHARGE light on the handset should be on. If the cordless handset is in the telephone base but the CHARGE light is not on, refer to The CHARGE light is off in this section. It may be necessary to purchase a new battery. Please refer to the Batteries section of this users manual. The telephone might be malfunctioning. Please refer to the Limited warranty section of this users manual for further instruction. 40 Appendix Troubleshooting The CHARGE light is off Clean the metallic charging contacts on the cordless hand-

set and telephone base each month using a pencil eraser or a dry non-abrasive fabric. Make sure the power adapter and telephone line cords are plugged in correctly and securely. Unplug the power adapter. Wait for 15 seconds before plugging it back in. Allow up to one minute for the cordless handset and telephone base to reset. The telephone might be malfunctioning. Please refer to the Limited warranty section of this users manual for further instruction. There is no dial tone First, try all the above suggestions. Move the cordless handset closer to the telephone base. The telephone does not ring when there is an incoming call It might be out of range. The telephone line cord might be malfunctioning. Try installing a new telephone line cord. Disconnect the telephone base from the telephone jack and connect a different telephone. If there is no dial tone on the telephone either, the problem is in your wiring or local service. Contact your local telephone company. Make sure the ringer is on (pages 11-12). Make sure the telephone line cord and power adapter are plugged in properly (page 6). The cordless handset may be too far from the telephone base. Move it closer to the telephone base. There may be too many extension telephones on the tel-

ephone line to allow all of them to ring simultaneously. Try unplugging some of them. If the other telephones in your home are having the same problem, the problem is in the wiring or local service. Contact the local telephone company (charges may apply). Other electronic products can cause interference to your cordless telephone. Try installing your telephone as far away as possible from the following electronic devices:

wireless routers, radios, radio towers, pager towers, cel-

lular telephones, digital telephones, intercoms, room monitors, televisions, VCRs, personal computers, kitchen appliances, and other cordless telephones. 41 Appendix Troubleshooting Test a working telephone at the same telephone jack. If another telephone has the same problem, the problem is in the telephone jack. Contact your local telephone com-

pany (charges may apply). The telephone line cord might be malfunctioning. Try installing a new telephone line cord. Re-install the battery and place the cordless handset in the telephone base. Wait for the cordless handset to synchronize with the telephone base. Allow up to one minute for this to take place. The cordless handset may be too far from the telephone base. Move closer to the telephone base and try to answer the call. First, try all the above suggestions. Make sure there is a dial tone before dialing. It is nor-

mal if the cordless handset takes a second or two to synchronize with the telephone before producing a dial tone. Wait an extra second before dialing. Make sure the telephone is set to the correct dial mode

(pulse dial or tone dial) for the service in your area. Refer to the Settings section of this users manual (page 11) to set the dial mode. If the other telephones in your home are having the same problem, the problem is in the wiring or local service. Contact your local telephone company (charg-

es may apply). Eliminate any background noise. Noise from a televi-

sion, radio, or other appliances may cause the telephone to not dial out properly. If you cannot eliminate the background noise, first try muting the cordless hand-

set before dialing, or dialing from another room in your home with less background noise. The handset may be out of range. Move it closer to the telephone base. 42 My phone rings but when I try to answer the call the handset screen shows CONNECTING I cannot dial out There is noise or interference dur-

ing a telephone conversation Appendix Troubleshooting My calls fade out or cut in and out when I am using the cordless hand-

set Appliances or other cordless telephones plugged into the same circuit as the telephone base can cause interference. Try moving the appliance or telephone base to another outlet. Other electronic products can cause interference to your cordless telephone. Try installing your telephone as far away as possible from the following electronic devices:

wireless routers, radios, radio towers, pager towers, cellular telephones, digital telephones, intercoms, room monitors, televisions, VCRs, personal computers, kitchen appliances, and other cordless telephones. Microwave ovens operate on the same frequency as your telephone. It is normal to experience static on your telephone while the microwave oven is operating. Do not install this telephone in the same outlet or near a microwave oven. If your telephone is plugged in with a modem or a surge protector, plug the telephone (or modem/surge protec-

tor) into a different location. If this solves the problem, re-

locate your telephone or modem farther apart from each other, or use a different surge protector. The layout of your home or office might be limiting the operating range. Try moving the base to another location, preferably a higher location for better reception. Disconnect the telephone base from the modular jack and plug in a corded telephone. If calls are still not clear, the problem is probably in the wiring or local service. Contact your local service company (charges may apply). Select channels four through 10 for your router (refer to the users manual of your router for more information). If the other telephones in your home are having the same problem, the problem is in the wiring or local service. Contact the local telephone company (charges may apply). Do you have DSL service? If yes, you need to have a DSL filter installed at every telephone jack that has a telephone connected to it. Contact your DSL service provider for filter information. I hear other calls when using the telephone Disconnect the telephone base from the telephone jack. Plug in a different telephone. If you still hear other calls, the problem is probably in the wiring or local service. Call your local telephone company. Time and day not set prompts You need to set the answering system clock (page 30). 43 Appendix Troubleshooting My caller ID features are not working properly Caller ID is a subscription service. You must subscribe to this service from your local telephone company for this feature to work on your telephone. The caller may not be calling from an area which supports The system does not receive caller ID or the system does not display caller ID during call waiting Common cure for electronic equipment caller ID. Both you and the callers telephone companies must use equipment which are compatible with caller ID service. If you subscribe to DSL service, install a DSL filter to the telephone line between the telephone base and the telephone line jack. Contact your DSL service provider for filter information. Make sure you subscribe to caller ID with call waiting fea-

tures services provided by the local telephone company. The caller may not be calling from an area which sup-

ports caller ID. Both you and the callers telephone companies must use equipment which are compatible with caller ID service. If you subscribe to DSL service, install a DSL filter to the telephone line between the telephone base and the telephone line jack. Contact your DSL service provider for filter information. If the telephone is not responding normally, try putting the cordless handset in the telephone base. If it does not seem to respond, try the following (in the order listed):

1. Disconnect the power to the telephone base. 2. Disconnect the battery on the cordless handset. 3. Wait a few minutes before connecting power to the telephone base. 4. Re-install the battery and place the cordless handset into the telephone base . 5. Wait for the cordless handset to synchronize its con-

nection with the telephone base. Allow up to one minute for this to take place. The announce-

ment message is not clear When recording the announcement, make sure you speak in a normal tone of voice about nine inches from the telephone base. Make sure there is no background noise (television, music, traffic, etc.) when recording. 44 Appendix Troubleshooting The answering system does not answer after the correct number of rings Make sure the answering system is on. When the answer-

ing system is on, the red light on the ANSWER ON key should be lit. If toll saver is activated, the number of rings changes to two when there are new messages waiting (page 32). If the memory is full or if the answering system is off, the system will answer after ten rings. If the memory is full, you need to delete some old messages in order to make room for new messages. In some cases, the answering system may be affected by the ringing system used by the local telephone company. Make sure the answering system is on. Call waiting If you subscribe to call waiting service with your local telephone company, there will be a beep if there is an incoming call while you are already on a call. Press PHONE/FLASH to put your current call on hold and take the new call. Press PHONE/FLASH anytime to switch back and forth between calls. Mute The mute function allows you to silence the microphone. You can hear the caller, but the caller will not be able to hear you. To mute the call:

Press MUTE to silence the microphone. When mute is on, MIC MUTED will display temporarily on the handset screen and MUTE will be shown until mute is turned off. To un-mute the call:

Press MUTE again and resume speaking. When mute is turned off, MIC ON will display temporarily on the handset screen. Temporary tone dialing If dial pulse (rotary) is selected, you can switch to touch tone dialing during a call by pressing TONE*. This can be useful if it is necessary to send tone signals for access to answering systems or long-distance services. After you hang up or press PHONE/FLASH

(to receive a call waiting call), the telephone automatically returns to dial pulse (rotary) service. (including nine speed dial entries). Each entry can contain a number up to 24 digits, and a name up to 14 characters. A convenient search feature can help you find and dial numbers quickly (page 25). NOTE: Each cordless handset has its own directory. Making changes to the directory of one handset will not affect the directories of the other handset(s). Timeouts & error messages If you pause for too long while creating an entry, the telephone will time out and you will have to begin again. If all memory locations are in use, the screen will display MEMORY FULL. You will not be able to store a new number until an existing one is deleted. (page 9). For optimum daily performance, return the cordless handset to the telephone base after use. Make sure the power adapter is securely plugged into an outlet not connected to a wall switch. Make sure the telephone line cord is plugged firmly into the telephone base and the modular wall jack. Unplug the telephones electrical power. Wait for approximately 15 seconds, then plug it back in. Allow up to one minute for the cordless handset and base to synchronize. Charge the battery in the cordless handset for at least 16 hours. Remove and re-insert the battery. If that still does not work, it may be necessary to purchase a new battery. Disconnect the telephone base from the modular jack and plug in a working telephone. If this telephone does not work, the problem is probably in the wiring or the local service. Call the local telephone company. Place the handset in the telephone base for recharging. The CHARGE light on the handset should be on as soon as the handset is properly placed on the telephone base. If the handset has not been used for a long time or if the battery inside is completely depleted. Depending on the strength of the battery in the handset, it may take up to 10 minutes before the handset screen shows NEEDS CHARGING. Remove and re-install the battery and use it normally until fully discharged, then recharge the handset on the telephone base for 16 hours. If the above measures do not correct the problem, the battery may need to be replaced. 45 LOW BATTERY is displayed on screen. Appendix C Troubleshooting The battery does not charge in the handset or the handset battery does not accept charge. The CHARGE light is off. Make sure the handset is placed in the telephone base correctly. The CHARGE light on the handset should be on. If the cordless handset is in the telephone base, but the CHARGE light is not on, refer to The CHARGE light is off in this section. It may be necessary to purchase a new battery. Please refer to the Batteries section of this users manual. The telephone might be malfunctioning. Please refer to the Limited warranty section of this users manual for further instruction. Clean the metallic charging contacts on the cordless handset and telephone base each month using a pencil eraser or a dry non-abrasive fabric. Make sure the power adapter and telephone line cords are plugged in correctly and securely. Unplug the power adapter. Wait for 15 seconds before plugging it back in. Allow up to one minute for the cordless handset and telephone base to reset. The telephone might be malfunctioning. Please refer to the Limited warranty section of this users manual for further instruction. There is no dial tone. First, try all the suggestions in My telephone does not work at all, on the previous page. Move the cordless handset closer to the telephone base. It might be out of range. The telephone line cord might be malfunctioning. Try installing a new telephone line cord. Disconnect the telephone base from the telephone jack and connect a different telephone. If there is no dial tone on that telephone either, the problem is in your wiring or local service. Contact your local telephone company. 46 Appendix C Troubleshooting The telephone does not ring when there is an incoming call. Make sure the ringer is on (page 12). Make sure the telephone line cord and power adapter are plugged in properly (page 6). The cordless handset may be too far from the telephone base. Move it closer to the telephone base. There may be too many extension telephones on the telephone line to allow all of them to ring simultaneously. Try unplugging some of them. If the other telephones in your home are having the same problem, the problem is in the wiring or local service. Contact the local telephone company (charges may apply). Other electronic products can cause interference to your cordless telephone. Try installing your telephone as far away as possible from the following electronic devices:

wireless routers, radios, radio towers, pager towers, cellular telephones, digital telephones, intercoms, room monitors, televisions, VCRs, personal computers, kitchen appliances, and other cordless telephones. Test a working telephone at the same telephone jack. If another telephone has the same problem, the problem is in the telephone jack. Contact your local telephone company (charges may apply). The telephone line cord might be malfunctioning. Try installing a new telephone line cord. Re-install the battery and place the cordless handset in the telephone base. Wait for the cordless handset to synchronize with the telephone base. Allow up to one minute for this to take place. The cordless handset may be too far from the telephone base. Move closer to the telephone base and try to answer the call. 47 My phone rings but when I try to answer the call the handset screen shows CONNECTING Appendix C Troubleshooting I cannot dial out. There is noise or interference during a telephone conversation. My calls fade out or cut in and out when I am using the cordless handset. First, try all the suggestions in The telephone does not ring when there is an incoming call, on the previous page. Make sure there is a dial tone before dialing. It is normal if the cordless handset takes a second or two to synchronize with the telephone before producing a dial tone. Wait an extra second before dialing. Make sure the telephone is set to the correct dial mode

(pulse dial or tone dial) for the service in your area. Refer to the Dial mode section of this users manual

(page 11) to set the dial mode. If the other telephones in your home are having the same problem, the problem is in the wiring or local service. Contact your local telephone company (charges may apply). Eliminate any background noise. Noise from a television, radio, or other appliances may cause the telephone to not dial out properly. If you cannot eliminate the background noise, first try muting the cordless handset before dialing, or dialing from another room in your home with less background noise. The handset may be out of range. Move it closer to the telephone base. Appliances or other cordless telephones plugged into the same circuit as the telephone base can cause interference. Try moving the appliance or telephone base to another outlet. Other electronic products can cause interference to your cordless telephone. Try installing your telephone as far away as possible from the following electronic devices:

wireless routers, radios, radio towers, pager towers, cellular telephones, digital telephones, intercoms, room monitors, televisions, VCRs, personal computers, kitchen appliances, and other cordless telephones. Microwave ovens operate on the same frequency as your telephone. It is normal to experience static on your telephone while the microwave oven is operating. Do not install this telephone in the same outlet or near a microwave oven. 48 Appendix C Troubleshooting If your telephone is plugged in with a modem or a surge protector, plug the telephone (or modem/

surge protector) into a different location. If this doesn't solve the problem, re-locate your telephone or modem farther apart from each other, or use a different surge protector. The layout of your home or office might be limiting the operating range. Try moving the telephone base to another location, preferably a higher location for better reception. Disconnect the telephone base from the modular jack and plug in a corded telephone. If calls are still not clear, the problem is probably in the wiring or local service. Contact your local service company

(charges may apply). Select channels four through 10 for your router

(refer to the users manual of your router for more information). If the other telephones in your home are having the same problem, the problem is in the wiring or local service. Contact the local telephone company

(charges may apply). If you subscribe to high-speed Internet service

(Digital Subscriber Line - DSL) through your telephone line, you must install a DSL filter between the telephone base and the telephone wall jack (see page 6). The filter will prevent noise and caller ID problems caused by DSL interference. Please contact your DSL service provider for more information about DSL filters. I hear other calls when using the telephone. Disconnect the telephone base from the telephone jack. Plug in a different telephone. If you still hear other calls, the problem is probably in the wiring or local service. Call your local telephone company. The announcement message is not clear. When recording the announcement, make sure you speak in a normal tone of voice about nine inches from the telephone base. Make sure there is no background noise (television, music, traffic, etc.) when recording. 49 Appendix C Troubleshooting My caller ID features are not working properly. Caller ID is a subscription service. You must subscribe to this service from your local telephone company for this feature to work on your telephone. The caller may not be calling from an area that supports caller ID. Both you and the callers telephone companies must use equipment compatible with caller ID service. If you subscribe to high-speed Internet service (Digital Subscriber Line - DSL) through your telephone line, you must install a DSL filter between the telephone base and the telephone wall jack (page 6). The filter will prevent noise and caller ID problems caused by DSL interference. Please contact your DSL service provider for more information about DSL filters Make sure you subscribe to caller ID with call waiting features services provided by the local telephone company. The caller may not be calling from an area that supports caller ID. Both you and the callers telephone companies must use equipment compatible with caller ID service. If you subscribe to high-speed Internet service (Digital Subscriber Line - DSL) through your telephone line, you must install a DSL filter between the telephone base and the telephone wall jack (page 6). The filter will prevent noise and caller ID problems caused by DSL interference. Please contact your DSL service provider for more information about DSL filters. You need to set the answering system clock (page 34). Make sure the answering system is on. When the answering system is on, the red light on the key should be lit. ON/OFF If toll saver is activated, the number of rings changes to two when there are new messages waiting (page 36). If the memory is full or if the answering system is off, the system will answer after 10 rings. If the memory is full, you need to delete some old messages in order to make room for new messages. In some cases, the answering system may be affected by the ringing system used by the local telephone company. 50 The system does not receive caller ID or the system does not display caller ID during call waiting. Time and day not set prompts. The answering system does not answer after the correct number of rings. Appendix C Troubleshooting The answering system does not record messages. The messages on the answering system are incomplete. The messages on the system are difficult to hear. The answering system does not respond to remote commands. Common cure for electronic equipment. Make sure the answering system is on. If the memory is full the system will answer after 10 rings and announce Memory is full. Enter the remote access code. You need to delete some old messages in order to make room for new messages. If a caller reaches the maximum recording time of four minutes, for each message, the system will disconnect and part of the message may be lost. If the caller pauses for more than seven seconds, the system stops recording and disconnects the call. If the memory on the system becomes full during a message, the system stops recording and disconnects the call. If the callers voice is very soft, the system may stop recording and disconnect the call. Press VOL on the telephone base to increase the speaker volume. Make sure your remote access code is correct (page 41). Make sure you are calling from a touch-tone telephone. When dialing a number, you should hear tones. If you hear clicks, then it is not a touch-tone telephone and cannot activate the answering system. The answering system may not detect the remote access code when your announcement is playing. Wait until the announcement is over before entering the code. There may be interference on the telephone line you are using. Press the dial pad keys firmly when dialing. If the telephone is not responding normally, try putting the cordless handset in the telephone base. If it does not seem to respond, try the following (in the order listed):

1. Disconnect the power to the telephone base. 2. Disconnect the battery on the cordless handset. 3. Wait a few minutes before connecting power to the telephone base. 4. Re-install the battery and place the cordless handset into the telephone base. 5. Wait for the cordless handset to synchronize its connection with the telephone base. Allow up to one minute for this to take place. 51 Appendix D Important safety instructions This symbol is to alert you to important operating or servicing instructions that may appear in this users manual. Telephone calls are transmitted between the telephone base and handset by radio waves, so there is a possibility that your cordless telephone conversations could be intercepted by radio receiving equipment within range of the cordless handset. For this reason, you should not think of cordless telephone conversations as being as private as those on corded telephones. Electrical power: The telephone base of this cordless telephone must be connected to a working electrical outlet. The electrical outlet should not be controlled by a wall switch. Calls cannot be made from the handset if the telephone base is unplugged or switched off, or if the electrical power is interrupted. Power adapter: This power adapter is intended to be plugged into a vertical wall outlet or a floor outlet. Potential TV interference: Some cordless telephones operate at frequencies that may cause interference to TVs and VCRs. To minimize or prevent such interference, do not place the telephone base of the cordless telephone near or on top of a TV or VCR. Wireless Technology Research, LLC (WTR), an independent research entity, led a multidisciplinary evaluation of the interference between portable wireless telephones and implanted cardiac pacemakers. Supported by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, WTR had recommended to physicians that:

Pacemaker patients Should keep wireless telephones at least six inches from the pacemaker. Should NOT place wireless telephones directly over the pacemaker, such as in a breast pocket, when it is turned ON. Should use the wireless telephone at the ear opposite the pacemaker. WTRs evaluation did not identify any risk to bystanders with pacemakers from other persons using wireless telephones. Especially about telephones answering systems Two-way recording: This telephone does not sound warning beeps to let the other party know that the call is being recorded. To ensure that you are in compliance with any federal or state regulations regarding recording a telephone call, you should start the recording process and then inform the other party that you are recording the call. SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS 54 Appendix E FCC part 68 & ACTA This equipment complies with Part 68 of the FCC rules and with technical requirements adopted by the Administrative Council for Terminal Attachments

(ACTA). The label on the back or bottom of this equipment contains, among other things, a product identifier in the format US:AAAEQ##TXXXX. This identifier must be provided to your local telephone company upon request. The plug and jack used to connect this equipment to premises wiring and the telephone network must comply with applicable Part 68 rules and technical requirements adopted by ACTA. This limited warranty does not cover:

PRODUCT that has been subjected to misuse, accident, shipping or other physical damage, improper installation, abnormal operation or handling, neglect, inundation, fire, water, or other liquid intrusion; or PRODUCT that has been damaged due to repair, alteration, or modification by anyone other than an authorized service representative of the manufacturer; or PRODUCT to the extent that the problem experienced is caused by signal conditions, network reliability or cable or antenna systems; or PRODUCT to the extent that the problem is caused by use with non-

AT&T accessories; or PRODUCT whose warranty/quality stickers, PRODUCT serial number plates or electronic serial numbers have been removed, altered or rendered illegible; or PRODUCT purchased, used, serviced, or shipped for repair from outside the United States of America or Canada, or used for commercial or institutional purposes (including but not limited to products used for rental purposes); or PRODUCT returned without valid proof of purchase (see item 6 below);

The manufacturer will return repaired or replaced PRODUCT under this limited warranty. Transportation, delivery or handling charges are prepaid. The manufacturer assumes no risk for damage or loss of the PRODUCT in transit. If the PRODUCT failure is not covered by this limited warranty, or proof of purchase does not meet the terms of this limited warranty, the manufacturer will notify you and will request that you authorize the cost of repair prior to any further repair activity. Other limitations This warranty is the complete and exclusive agreement between you and the manufacturer of this AT&T branded PRODUCT.
