ever the handset is in its charger or base unit. You should charge the batteries for 10-12 hours when you first receive your phone. You will know the batter-

1. Do not dispose of batteries in a fire, they might explode. 2. Do not open or mutilate the batteries. Toxic substances may be released, causing harm to eyes or skin. 3. Exercise care in handling batteries in order to prevent an accidental short of the charge contacts, potentially causing the batteries to overheat. 4. Do not dispose of these batteries into household garbage, they should be properly recycled. 5. Do not charge the batteries with other electrical devices. 8 d e t r a t S g n i t t e G Setup Check Battery Indicator If you receive a check battery warning, it indicates one of the following:

1. There are no batteries in your handset. You need to install batteries into your handset (see Installation of Batteries section on the previous page.) 2. You have accidentally installed alkaline batteries into the handset. (Alkaline batteries must NEVER be used in this phone. See the warning on the previous page for additional information about batteries for this telephone.) 3. The rechargeable batteries in your handset need to be replaced with new batteries. 4. The batteries have been installed incorrectly. Reinstall (see Installation of Batteries) and/or the diagram in the battery compartment on the handset. Connecting to Phone Line Plug one end of the telephone line cord into the jack on the back of the base unit. Then plug the other end of this cord into the wall jack. Before connecting to phone line, be sure to charge the battery for at least 12 hours. Checking for Dial Tone After the batteryies are charged, press ON on the handset. The LCD displays PHONE and shows a call timer, and you will hear a dial tone. If not, see In Case of Difficulty. CAUTION: Use only the VTech power supply provided with your tele phone. MANCE OF YOUR CORDLESS TELEPHONE SYSTEM:

1. Choose a central location for your base unit. 2. Install your base unit and extension hand-

Wall mounting is optional. 1. Plug the AC adapters into an electrical outlet, and the DC connector to the bottom of the base unit. 2. Connect the telephone line cord to the jack at the bottom of the base unit, and the 3. other end to the wall jack. Line up the tabs on the wall mount adapters with the holes at the bottom of the base unit/back of the handset charger. Snap the wall mount bracket firmly in place. 4. Mount the base unit/handset charger on the wall. Position the base unit/handset charger so the mounting studs will fit into the holes on the wall mount bracket. Slide base unit/

HS2 is now on the external call. CALL TRANSFERRED will display on HS1. Press OFF on HS1 to transfer the external call to HS2. Each memory location can hold up to 32 digits for the number and 16 characters for the name. NOTE: The handsets share a common phonebook, which is stored in the base. This means that entries inserted by one handset are available for both handsets, and if one deletes a phonebook entry, it will disappear from both handsets. When one handset is accessing the phonebook, the other handset cannot access it at the same time. If this is attempted, NOT AVAILABLE AT THIS TIME will display on the second handset.

With Call Waiting CID, the CID data is displayed so you can decide whether to answer the incoming call, or continue with your current conversation. viders. You must subscribe to these services to get the benefits of these features. If you do not subscribe to Caller ID services, you can still use your mi 6823 and the other features it offers. Due to regional incompatibilities, CID information may not be available for every call you receive. After you hang up, the phone will return to pulse dialing for the next call. n o i t a r e p O c i s a B 23 n o i t a r e p O d e c n a v d A Headset Operation Headset Operation Your mi 6823 handset is equipped with a 2.5mm headset jack for use with an optional accessory headset for handsfree conversations. If you choose to use the headset option, you must obtain an optional accessory headset that is compatible with the mi 6823. To purchase a headset, call VTech Customer Service at 1-800-595-9511. Once you have a compatible 2.5mm headset, locate the headset jack on the mi 6823 handset. Connect the plug on the headset cord to the jack (under a small rubber flag) on the cordless handset. The plug should fit securely. Do not force the connection. NOTE:

Whenever a compatible headset is con-

nected to the cordless handset, the micro-

phone on the handset will be muted. This is done to limit the effect of background noise. When a compatible headset is connected to the cordless handset, your speakerphone fea-

ture will be disabled. To use your speaker-

phone feature, simply disconnect the headset from the handset. Belt Clip The mi 6823 is also equipped with a detach-

able belt clip. Align the pins on the inside edge of the clip with the notches on the sides of the handset. The belt clip should snap securely into place. Do not force the connection. 24 In Case Of Difficulty In Case Of Difficulty If you have difficulties in operating your phone, the suggestions below should solve the problem. If you still have difficulties after trying these suggestions, call VTech Commu-

nications at 1-800-595-9511. In Canada, call VTech Telecommunications Canada Ltd. at 1-800-267-7377. The Phone Doesnt Work At All Make sure the power cord is plugged in. Make sure the telephone line cord is plugged firmly into the base unit and the telephone wall jack. Make sure the batteries are properly charged. If you get a LOW BATTERY message or indication, the batteries needs to be charged. No Dial Tone First check all the suggestions above. If you still dont hear a dial tone, disconnect the base unit from the telephone jack and connect a different phone. If there is no dial tone on that phone either, the problem is in your wiring or local service. Contact your local telephone company. You Get Noise, Static, Or A Weak Signal Even When Youre Near The Base Unit Household appliances plugged into the same circuit as the base unit can sometimes cause interference. Try to move the appliance or the base unit to another outlet. You Get Noise, Static, Or A Weak Signal When Youre Away From The Base Unit You may be out of range. Either move closer to the base, or relocate the base unit. The layout of your home may be limiting the range. Try to move the base unit to another position. The Handset Does Not Ring When You Receive A Call Make sure you have the ringers activated. Refer to the section(s) on Ringer Volume in this user's manual. Make sure the telephone line cord is plugged firmly into the base unit and the tele phone jack. Make sure the power cord is plugged in. You may be too far from the base unit. You may have too many extension phones on your telephone line to allow all of them to ring. Try to unplug some of the other phones. You Hear Other Calls While Using Your Phone Disconnect your base unit from the telephone jack, and plug in a corded telephone. If you still hear other calls, the problem is probably in your wiring or local service. Call your local telephone company. You Hear Noise In The Handset, And None Of The Keys Or Buttons Work Make sure the power cord is plugged in. Common Cure For Electronic Equipment If the unit does not seem to be responding normally, then try to put the handset in its charger. If it does not seem to respond, follow these steaps in order:

teries. Charging of the Handset Batteries The handset of your cordless telephone is powered by rechargeable batteries. It charges automatically whenever the handset is in its charger or base unit. You should charge the batteries for 10-12 hours when you first receive your phone. You will know the batteries need charging when:

The low battery message is displayed:

The handset seems completely dead, the LCD is completely clear and does not activate when you press the keys. NOTE: When in LOW BATTERY mode, the keypad sounds, backlighting and speakerphone features will not work. When your battery has been charged, your features will return to their normal function. IMPORTANT:

1. Do not dispose of batteries in a fire, they might explode. 2. Do not open or mutilate the batteries. Toxic substances may be released, causing harm to eyes or skin. 3. Exercise care in handling the batteries in order to prevent an accidental short of the charge contacts, potentially causing the batteries to overheat. 7 Setup d e t r a t S g n i t t e G 4. Do not dispose of the batteries into household garbage. Properly recycle the batteries. 5. Do not charge the batteries with other electrical devices. Check Battery Indicator If you receive a check battery warning, it indicates one of the following:

1. There are no batteries in your handset. Youll need to install batteries into your handset (see Installation and Charge of Battery Cells in Hand-

set section on the previous page.) 2. You have accidentally installed alkaline batter-

ies into the handset. (Alkaline batteries must NEVER be used in this phone. See the warning on the previous page for additional information about bat-

teries for this telephone.) 3. The rechargeable batteries in your handset need to be replaced by new batteries. 4. The batteries have been installed incorrectly. Please reinstall (see Installa-

tion of Battery Cells in Handset) and/or the diagram in the battery compart-

ment on the handset. Connecting to Phone Line Plug one end of the telephone line cord into the jack at the bottom of the base unit. Then plug the other end of the cord into the wall jack. Checking for Dial Tone After the batteries are charged, press ON on the handset. PHONE will appear on the handset display, and you will hear a dial tone. If not, see In Case of Difficulty. CAUTION: Use only the VTech power supply provided with your telephone. IMPORTANT! FOR MAXIMUM PER-

FORMANCE OF YOUR CORDLESS TELEPHONE SYSTEM:

1. Choose a central location for your base unit. 2. Install your base unit and extension hand-

sets away from electronic equipment, such as personal computers, televi-

sion sets and microwave ovens. 3. In locations where there are multiple cordless telephones, separate base units as far away as possible. 4. Install your telephone equipment away from heat sources and sunlight. 5. Avoid excessive moisture, dust or extreme cold. 8 Wall Mounting The wall mount brackets are designed for use on standard wall mount plates only. wall mounting is optional. 1. Plug the AC adapters into electrical outlets. Then plug the DC connector of the base power adapter to the connector jack at the bottom of the base unit. 2. Connect the telephone line cord to the jack at the bottom of the base unit, and the other end to the wall jack. 3. Line up the tabs on the wall mount adapters with the holes at the bottom of the base unit/back of the handset charger. Snap the wall mount bracket firmly in place. 4. Mount the base unit/handset charger on the wall. Position the base unit/

handset charger so that the mounting studs will fit into the holes on the wall mount bracket. You can use your mi 6863 with services such as call waiting. When you receive a call waiting sig-

nal, simply press the ON/FLASH key to switch to the new call. Press ON/FLASH again to switch back to the original call. NOTE: Use ON/FLASH to access other phone company subscriber services, as described by your provider. Redial Function

Press REDIAL/PAUSE to display the last telephone number dialed from the handset to scroll

(up to 32 digits). Use through the last five numbers dialed. When the beginning or the end of the redial list is reached, a double beep will sound. or

A handset (HS1) on an external call can for-

ward the call to the other handset (HS2) by pressing and holding the INT key. The display of HS1 will initially show:

A handset (HS1) on an e xternal call can forward it to the other handset (HS2) by pressing the INT key. NOTE: The external call is put on hold automatically.

HS2 will ring, showing an intercom call.

HS2 can answer the intercom call by pressing ON.

Intercom call link is established while the external call is still on hold. HS1 may discuss the external call with HS2.

When HS1 presses OFF, the external call is then transferred to HS2. CALL TRANSFERRED will briefly display on HS1. Each memory location can hold up to 32 digits for the number and 16 characters for the name. NOTE: The handsets share a common phonebook, which is stored in the base. This means that entries inserted by one handset are available for both handsets, and if one deletes a phonebook entry, it will disappear from both handsets. When one handset is accessing the phonebook, the other handset cannot access it at the same time. If this is attempted, NOT AVAILABLE AT THIS TIME will display on the second handset. If the number is contained in the phonebook, the name of the caller will also be displayed. It is also capable of displaying CID information in conjunction with a Call Waiting alert signal (Call Waiting Caller ID). With Call Waiting Caller ID, the CID data is displayed so you can decide whether to answer the incoming call, or continue with your current conversation. Your mi 6863 can hold up to 50 CID entries. NOTES ABOUT CALLER ID & CALL WAITING CALLER ID These are subscription services, provided by most regional telephone ser-

vice providers. You must subscribe to these services to get the benefits of these features. If you do not subscribe to CID services, you can still use your mi 6863 and the other features it offers. Due to regional incompatibilities, CID information may not be available for every call you receive. erations and voice confirmations when you press a button or complete an operation. Turn Answering System On or Off Press ON/OFF to turn the system on or off. When the system is turned on, you will hear "Answering machine on" and the ON/

OFF light will be lit. When the system is off, you will hear "Answering machine off" and the ON/OFF light will not be lit. The system will still answer after 10 rings if it is off, then announce

"Please enter your security code" and wait for you to enter your two digit code to access remote functions. (See Remote Access on page 31 for details.) Set the Clock This system comes preset to Monday, 12:00 AM, If CL flashes in the message window, you will need to set the correct day and time at the base. 1. Press TIME/SET. The time and day will be announced, followed by "To set day and time, press TIME/SET." Press TIME/SET again. The day will be announced. 2. Press CHANGE until the system announces the correct day, then press TIME/

SET. The system announces the current hour setting. 3. Press CHANGE until the system announces the correct hour, press TIME/SET. The system announces the current minute setting. 4. Press CHANGE to advance the minutes one at a time.

Callers using a touch tone phone can select the mailbox in which their messages will be recorded by pressing 1, 2, or 3 while the system plays the outgoing announcement. Otherwise, messages will be recorded in mailbox 1. About Announcements

You can record two different announcements - one for normal answering and one for when you've set the system to play the announcement only.

Use normal answering when you want the system to record callers' messages. Use Announce only when you want to give information to callers without accepting messages. If you choose not to record an announcement, the system answers with a pre-recorded announcement. The normal answering pre-recorded announcement says: "Hello. I'm unable to answer your call right now. Please leave your name, number and a message after the tone." The Announce Only pre-recorded announcement says: "Hello, I'm un-

able to answer your call right now. Please call again. Thank you."

By setting Announce Only to on or off, you decide which announcement your callers will hear when the system answers a call (the system comes set for normal answering, with Announce Only turned off). See Set Announce Only on page 26 to change your announcement selection. Record Your Announcement NOTE: If you have assigned different mailboxes to different people, be sure to tell callers in your announcement to press 1, 2 or 3 to leave a message in the appropriate mailbox. Remember to leave a few seconds blank at the end of your recorded announcement to allow callers having enough time to select a mailbox. An example of an announcement:

"Thank you for calling. To leave a message for Bob, press 1 now; to leave a message for Sue, press 2 now; to leave a message for Elmo, press 3 now; or, wait for the beep and leave your message."

The system will record your announcement for the currently selected answer mode (Normal or Announce Only). To confirm or change the answer mode, follow the directions under Answering System Feature Setup and Feature Summary on pages 25 and 26. 1. With the system set for the desired answer mode

2. Press REC/MEMO. After you hear "Now record-

A message or memo can be up to four minutes long. If the system has less than 30 seconds of recording time left, it automatically turns off. The system will still answer after 10 rings, announce "Memory full, please enter your security code" and wait for the caller to enter the code to access remote functions. (See Remote Access beginning on page 31 for details.) When you have new messages or memos, the PLAY/STOP light for each mail-

box with new messages will flash. Listen to Messages A mailbox key will flash if you have new messages. If all messages in that mailbox are old, the key will glow steadily. Press the PLAY/STOP button for the mailbox you want to review. The system announces the mailbox number, the number of new messages and the num-

ber of old messages. The system then plays only new messages in the mailbox. After all new messages are played, press the PLAY/STOP button again to hear all

(old) messages. Before each message or memo plays, the system announces the day and time it was received. While a message plays, the mes-

sage window displays the number of that message. Press REPEAT/SLOW during playback to hear a message again. If you press REPEAT/SLOW twice in the first two seconds of a message, the system will backup to replay the previous message. Press SKIP/QUICK during playback to skip to the next message. Press and hold SKIP/QUICK or REPEAT/

SLOW during message playback to speed up or slow down playback of a message. After playing the last message in a mailbox, the system announces "End of messages." Press #5 to stop. Press 0. Press #0; the system announces, "Answering machine off." Press #0 again to turn the system back on. When system is off, it answers after 10 rings and announces, "Please enter your security code." Enter your remote access code.

NOTE: If no key is pressed within 10 seconds of entering remote access, the voice menu will be announced. After the voice menu announcement, if no key is pressed within 20 seconds, the remote access call will automatically end. 30 Headset Operation Your mi 6863 handset is equipped with a 2.5mm headset jack for use with an optional accessory headset for handsfree operation. If you choose to use the headset option, you must obtain an optional accessory headset, which is compatible with the mi 6863. To purchase a Headset, call VTech Customer Service at 1-800-595-9511. Once you have a compatible 2.5mm headset, locate the headset jack on the mi 6863 handset. Connect the plug on the headset cord to the jack (under a small rubber flap) on the cordless handset. The plug should fit securely. Do not force the connection. NOTE:

Whenever a compatible headset is connected to the cordless handset, the microphone on the handset will be muted. This is done to limit the effect of background noise. Belt Clip The mi 6863 is also equipped with a detachable belt clip. Align the pins on the inside edge of the clip with the notches on the sides of the handset. The belt clip should snap securely into place. Make sure the Power Cord is plugged in.

Make sure the telephone line cord is plugged firmly into the Base Unit and the telephone wall jack.

Make sure the batteries are properly charged. If you get a LOW BATTERY message or indication, the batteries need charging. No dial tone First try all the suggestions above. If you still don't hear a dial tone, disconnect the Base Unit from the telephone jack and connect a different phone. If there is no dial tone on that phone either, the problem is in your wiring or local service. Contact your local telephone company. You get noise, static, or a weak signal even when you're near the Base Unit

Household appliances plugged into the same circuit as the Base Unit can sometimes cause interference. Try moving the appliance or the Base Unit to another outlet. You get noise, static, or a weak signal when you're away from the Base Unit You may be out of range. Either move closer to the Base, or relocate the Base Unit. The layout of your home may be limiting the range. Try moving the Base Unit to another position. The Handset does not ring when you receive a call

Make sure you have the ringer activated. Refer to the section(s) on ringer selection in this Users Manual.

Make sure the telephone line cord is plugged firmly into the Base Unit and the telephone jack. Make sure the power cord is plugged in. You may be too far from the Base Unit. In Case Of Difficulty You hear other calls while using your phone

Disconnect your Base Unit from the telephone jack, and plug in a regular telephone. If you still hear other calls, the problem is probably in your wiring or local service. Call your local telephone company. You hear noise in the Handset, and none of the keys or buttons work

Make sure the power cord is plugged in. Common cure for electronic equipment If the unit does not seem to be responding normally, then try putting the Handset in its Base. If it does not seem to respond, do the following (in the order listed):

1. Disconnect the power to the Base. 2. Disconnect the Handset battery, and spare battery pack, if applicable. 3. Wait a few minutes. 4. Connect power to the Base. 5. Re-install the battery pack(s). 6. Wait for the Handset to re-establish its link with the Base. Also, if you receive high speed internet through your telephone line (commonly referred to as DSL), install a DSL filter to the telephone line between the telephone base and the telephone wall jack. The power adapter is intended to be correctly oriented in a vertical or floor mount position. 5 Getting started Battery installation & charging Install the battery as shown below. After installing the battery, you can make and receive short calls, but replace the handset in the telephone base or additional charger when not in use. For optimal performance, charge the handset battery for at least 16 hours before use. When fully charged, the handset battery provides approximately five hours of talk time and three days of standby time. Step 1 Plug the battery securely into the plug inside the handset battery compartment, matching the color-

coded label. Step 2 Insert the supplied battery as indicated. Insert the top edge

(contacts and tab) in first, then push downwards on the lower portion of the battery. Step 3 Align the cover flat against the battery compartment cover, then slide it upwards until it clicks into place Step 4 Charge the handset, by placing the handset face up in the telephone base or in the additional charger. If wall mounting is desired, a telephone outlet wall mounting plate with mounting studs is required. This mounting plate with studs may be available for purchase from any handware or consumer electronics retailers and may require professional installation. Desktop to wall mount installation To install the telephone base in the wall mount position, make sure that you first unplug all cords connected to the telephone base before you begin. 1. Press the bracket upwards until the bracket clicks into place and is secure. 2. Plug the telephone line cord and power adapter plug into the telephone base and place the cords in the bracket grooves. 3. Plug the power adapter and telephone line cord into the wall outlets, then align the mounting studs on the telephone outlet plate with the mounting holes on the bracket. 4. Place the telephone base mounting holes just above the mounting studs, then slide the telephone base down until it is secure. 8 Getting started Installation options Wall mount to desktop installation To change the telephone base from the wall mount position to desktop position, make sure that you first unplug the power adapter and telephone line cord from the wall outlets before you begin. 1. Slide the telephone base upwards, then pull the telephone base away from the wall off of the mounting studs. 2. Remove the telephone line cord and power adapter plug from the telephone base. 3. Press the bracket downwards until the bracket clicks into place and is secure. 4. Plug the telephone line cord into the telephone base and telephone wall jack, then plug the power adapter plug into the telephone base and to an electrical wall outlet not controlled by a wall switch (see page 5). Handset operation Handset locator The handset locator feature is useful if you misplace a handset(s). To start the paging tone:

Press HANDSET LOCATOR at the telephone base. This starts the paging tone at the handset(s) for 60 seconds to help you locate the handset(s). NOTE: When paging, if you press OFF/CLEAR or MUTE/REMOVE on a handset, the ringer of the handset will be silent but the handset locator feature will not be cancelled. To stop the paging tone:

Press PHONE/FLASH, SPEAKER, or any dial pad key (0-9, *, or #) on the handset(s), OR Press HANDSET LOCATOR on the telephone base. NOTE: The handset ringer volume also determines the level of the paging tone. If the handset ringer volume level is set to off, that handset will be silent for all calls and paging (page 19). 12 Telephone operation Options while on calls Volume control Press the VOLUME keys on the side of the handset to adjust listening volume. Each press of the button increases or decreases the volume. Volume control NOTES:

1. All volume settings, (normal handset, speakerphone, and headset) are independent. 2. When the volume level has reached the minimum or maximum setting, you will hear two beeps. Call waiting If you subscribe to call waiting service with your local telephone service provider, you will hear a beep if someone calls while you are already on a call. Press PHONE/FLASH to put your current call on hold and take the new call. You can press PHONE/FLASH at any time to switch back and forth between calls. Multiple handset use (Not applicable to TL72108) If a handset is already in use and you would like to join the call, press PHONE/FLASH or SPEAKER on another system handset. Press OFF/CLEAR or place the handset in the telephone base or charger to exit the call. The call will not be terminated until all handsets hang up. NOTE: A maximum of two handsets can be used at once on an outside call. 13 Telephone operation NOTE: You cannot press OFF/CLEAR to exit redial, directory or caller ID access without ending the call. Options while on calls Last number redial While on a call, you can press REDIAL/PAUSE to review the most recently called number. To return to your call, press REDIAL/PAUSE. If you do not press REDIAL/PAUSE within two seconds, the most recently called number displayed will be dialed automatically. NOTE: While on a call, only the most recently called number can be reviewed, and erasing the entry is not allowed. For more details about the redial memory, see page 11. Mute The mute function allows you to silence the microphone. You can hear the caller, but the caller will not be able to hear you. To mute the call:

Press MUTE/REMOVE to silence the microphone. When mute is on, MUTED will display temporarily on the handset screen and MUTE will be shown until mute is turned off. To un-mute the call:

Press MUTE/REMOVE again and resume speaking. When mute is turned off, MICROPHONE ON will display temporarily on the handset screen. Temporary tone dialing If you only have dial pulse (rotary service), you can temporarily switch to touch tone dialing during a call by pressing *. This can be useful if you need to send tone signals for access to answering systems or long-distance services. The screen of the originating handset will show INTERCOM TO:. 2. Enter the handset number of the destination handset. The display will show CALLING HANDSET X. The destination handset will ring, and its screen will show HANDSET X IS CALLING. 3. On the ringing destination handset, press PHONE/FLASH, INT, SPEAKER, or any dial pad key (0-9, * or #) to answer the intercom call. NOTES:

1. Before the intercom call is answered, you can cancel the intercom call by pressing OFF/CLEAR or INT on the originating handset. 2. If the destination handset is not answered within 100 seconds or if it is in the directory or call log mode, or out of range, the originating handset will show the message UNABLE TO CALL TRY AGAIN. 3. Pressing OFF/CLEAR or MUTE/REMOVE will temporarily silence the intercom ringer. To end the intercom call:

The destination handset will ring, and its screen will show OTHER HANDSET IS CALLING. 2. Memory capacity The directory can store up to 50 entries, with a maximum of 15 alphanumeric characters (including spaces) and 30 digits. A convenient search feature can help you find and dial numbers quickly (page 28). If all memory locations are in use, the screen will display LIST FULL. You will not be able to store a new number until an existing one is deleted. Exiting the directory Press OFF/CLEAR to cancel an operation, back up to the previous menu, or exit the menu display. There are fees for caller ID services. In addition, services may not be available in all areas. Depending on your service, you may see the callers number or the callers name and number. NOTE: The number shown by your caller ID will be in the format sent by the phone company. The phone company usually delivers ten-digit phone numbers (area code plus phone number). If the telephone number of the person calling does not exactly match a number in your directory, the name will appear as delivered by the phone company. For example if the phone company includes the area code and the directory number does not, the name will appear as delivered by the phone company. Missed calls indicator When a handset is in idle mode and has calls that have not been reviewed, its screen will show XX MISSED CALLS. All entries which have not been reviewed will be counted as missed calls when the phone is idle. Each time a call log entry marked NEW is reviewed, the number of missed calls decreases by one. If you have too many missed calls and you do not want to review them one by one, but you still want to keep them in the call log, you can press and hold OFF/CLEAR for four seconds when the handset is idle. Individual messages can be up to four minutes long, and the total maximum recording time is 14 minutes. Messages will remain available for replay until you delete them. Voice prompts Each time you press any answering system key, the answering system uses voice prompts to guide you. 34 Answering system operation NOTES:

1. If the clock was not set when the message was recorded, the system will announce "Time and day not set."

2. Caller ID provides the time and date. Set the year so that the day of the week can be calculated from the caller ID information. After you set the time once, it will thereafter be set automatically with incoming caller ID information. The time will be set automatically only if you subscribe to caller ID service provided by your local telephone company

(page 30). Day & time announcement To check day & time You can press CLOCK when the system is idle to hear the current day and time without changing it. To set day & time Before playing each message, the answering system announces the day and time the message was received. Follow the steps below to set the year, time and day, so messages are dated correctly. Each time you press SKIP or REPEAT, the year, hour, minute or day increases or decreases by one. Press and hold SKIP or REPEAT to increase or decrease the minutes or year by increments of ten. When you hear the correct setting, press CLOCK to move to the next setting. 1. Press CLOCK, the system will announce the current clock setting, then announces To set the clock, press CLOCK. 2. The telephone is pre-set with an outgoing announcement. If the telephone is set up to record messages, it answers calls with Hello. Please leave a message after the tone. You can use this announcement, or replace it with your own recording. To play your outgoing announcement Press ANNC. then you will hear "Announcement. Press PLAY or press RECORD." Press PLAY/STOP to hear the outgoing announcement. Press ANNC to exit the announcement menu. To record your outgoing announcement Press ANNC. You will hear "Announcement. Press PLAY or press RECORD." Then press RECORD and begin speaking after you hear "Record after the tone. Press STOP when you are done." Speak facing the telephone base from about nine inches away. Press PLAY/STOP when you are done. Your recorded announcement will be played back. To listen to the recorded announcement again, press To re-record a new announcement, press RECORD then follow the above steps. Press ANNC to exit the announcement menu. Elapsed time (in seconds) will be shown in the message window when recording. You can record an announcement up to 90 seconds long. Announcement shorter than two seconds long will not be recorded. To delete your outgoing announcement Press ANNC. You will hear Announcement. Press PLAY/STOP PLAY or press RECORD." Then press to begin playback. Press DELETE during playback to delete your announcement. Press ANNC to exit the announcement menu. When your announcement is deleted, calls will be answered with the pre-set announcement described above. NOTE: If the answering system is off, and there is an incoming call, the system will answer after 10 rings and announce to the caller Please enter your remote access code. Call screening If the answering system is on and the base volume is not off, you will hear the announcement and the incoming message when a call comes in. Call intercept While you are screening a call, you can interrupt the answering system and speak to the caller by pressing PHONE/FLASH or SPEAKER on the handset. The answering system will stop recording. 41 Answering system operation Remote access You can access your answering system remotely by dialing your home telephone number from any touch-tone telephone. To remotely access your answering system:

1. Dial your telephone number from any touch-

tone telephone. 2. When the system answers, enter the two digit remote access code (19 is the default code, see page 37 to change it). If you have new messages, the system will automatically announce the number of new messages and then begin to play them. NOTES:

1. If you pause for more than four seconds during remote access, you will hear a help menu listing all features and commands. If there is no command for another 20 seconds, the call will end automatically. 2. If the system has many old messages, press 3 twice in remote standby mode to delete them. This process could take up to 18 seconds and you will hear a beep every second to alert you the system is deleting the messages. If you hang up while the system is deleting all old messages, the system will stop the deletion and exit. In this case, only some of the old messages will be deleted. 3. 45 Appendix Adding and registering handsets Your telephone can accommodate up to four cordless handsets. You can add new handsets (TL70008, sold separately) to the TL72108/TL72208/TL72308 at any time, but each handset must be registered with the telephone base before use. Each handset must be registered separately The handset provided with your TL72108 is automatically registered as handset 1. Additional handsets will be assigned numbers in the order they are registered (handset 2, handset 3, and handset 4). You can register a maximum of four handsets. The TL72208 has two handsets automatically registered as handset 1 and handset 2. You can register two additional handsets, which will be assigned as handset 3 and handset 4. The TL72308 has three handsets automatically registered as handset 1, handset 2 and handset 3. You can register one additional handset, which will be assigned as handset 4. The TL72408 has four pre-registered handsets, so you cannot register any additional handset to it. NOT REGISTERED PRESS HNDST LOC 4 SEC ON BASE PLEASE WAIT... If the light stops flashing, pick up the handset and place back into the telephone base, then start again step number one.) 3. The handset(s) will show CONNECTING... and it will take about 10 seconds to complete de-registration. ALL handsets will show NOT REGISTERED if de-registration was successful. NOT REGISTERED 4. To re-register the handset(s) to the telephone base, follow the registration instructions on page 46. NOTES:

1. If the de-registration process was not successful, you may need to reset the system and try again. To reset: pick up the handset and press the PHONE/FLASH button, then press the OFF/CLEAR button and place the handset back into the telephone base. You may also reset by unplugging the power from the telephone base and plug it back in. 2. For optimum daily performance, return the cordless handset to its base when not in use. Reset the telephone base. Unplug the units electrical power. Wait for approximately 15 seconds, then plug it back in. Allow up to one minute for the cordless handset and telephone base to reset. You may need to purchase a new battery, please refer to page 6 of this users manual. I cannot get a dial tone First try all the suggestions above. Move the cordless handset closer to the telephone base. You might have moved out of range. I cannot dial out If the previous suggestions dont work, disconnect the telephone base from the telephone jack and connect to a different phone. If there is no dial tone on that phone either, the problem is in your wiring or local service. Contact your local telephone company. Your line cord might be malfunctioning. Try installing a new line cord. First try all the suggestions above. Make sure you have a dial tone before dialing. The cordless handset may take a second or two to find the telephone base and produce a dial tone. This is normal. Wait an extra second before dialing. 48 Appendix Troubleshooting Make sure your phone is set to the correct dial mode for the type of service that you have (pulse or touch tone). Refer to the Telephone operation section of this users manual (page 23) to set the dial tone. Eliminate any background noise. Noise from a television, radio or other appliances may cause the phone to not dial out properly. If you cannot eliminate the background noise, first try muting the cordless handset before dialing, or dialing from another room in your home with less background noise. If the other phones in your home are having the same problem, the problem is in your wiring or local service. Contact your local telephone company (charges may apply). Make sure the power cord is securely plugged into the telephone base. Plug the unit into a different, working electrical outlet not controlled by a wall switch. Move the cordless handset closer to the telephone base. You might have moved out of range. Reset the telephone base. Unplug the units electrical power. Wait for 15 seconds then plug it back in. Allow up to one minute for the cordless handset and telephone base to reset. Other electronic products can cause interference to your cordless phone. I get noise, static, or weak signal even when Im near the telephone base If you subscribe to DSL service and if you hear noise during conversations and/or your caller ID features are not functioning properly, install a DSL filter to the telephone line between the telephone base and the telephone line jack. Contact your DSL provider to obtain a DSL filter. You may be able to improve the performance of your cordless phone by installing your new telephone base as far as possible from any other existing cordless telephone system that may already be installed. Other electronic products can cause interference to your cordless phone. Try installing your phone as far away from the following electronic devices as possible:

television sets, VCRs, or other cordless telephones. 50 Appendix Troubleshooting Do not install this phone near a microwave oven or on the same electrical outlet. Make sure the telephone line cord is plugged securely into the telephone base and the telephone jack. Make sure the power cord is securely plugged in. The cordless handset may be too far from the telephone base. Charge the battery in the cordless handset for at least 16 hours. For optimum daily performance, return the cordless handset to its base when not in use. You may have too many extension phones on your telephone line to allow all of them to ring simultaneously. Try unplugging some of the other phones. 51 Appendix Troubleshooting The layout of your home or office might be limiting the operating range. Try moving the telephone base to another location, preferably on an upper floor. If the other phones in your home are having the same problem, the problem is in your wiring or local service. You must subscribe to this service from your local telephone company for this feature to work on your phone. Your caller must be calling from an area that supports caller ID. Both you and your callers telephone companies must use caller ID compatible equipment. System does not receive caller ID when on a call Make sure you subscribe to caller ID with call waiting features services provided by your local telephone company. Caller ID features will work only if both you and the caller are in areas offering caller ID service, and if both telephone companies use compatible equipment. 53 Appendix Troubleshooting Common cure for electronic equipment Incomplete messages Difficulty hearing messages System does not answer after correct number of rings If the unit does not seem to be responding normally, try putting the cordless handset in its base. If it does not seem to respond, do the following (in the order listed):

Disconnect the power to the telephone base. Disconnect the cordless handset battery, and spare battery, if applicable. Wait a few minutes. Connect power to the telephone base. Re-install the battery, and place the cordless handset into the telephone base. Wait for the cordless handset to re-establish its connection with the telephone base. Allow up to one minute for this to take place. If a caller leaves a very long message, part of it may be lost when the system disconnects the call after four minutes. If the caller pauses for more than seven seconds, the system stops recording and disconnects the call. If the systems memory becomes full during a message, the system stops recording and disconnects the call. If the caller's voice is very soft, the system may stop recording and disconnects the call. Press VOLUME to increase speaker volume. Make sure that the answering system is on (see page 41). If toll saver is activated, the number of rings changes to two when you have new messages stored (see page 37). If the memory is full or the system is off, the system will answer after 10 rings. 54 Appendix Troubleshooting System announces Time and day not set System does not respond to remote commands You need to reset the answering system clock (page 35). Make sure to enter your remote access code correctly

(see page 42). Make sure you are calling from a touch-tone phone. When you dial a number, you should hear tones. If you hear clicks, the phone is not a touch-tone telephone and cannot activate the answering system. The answering system may not detect the remote access code while your announcement is playing. Try waiting until the announcement is over before entering the code. There may be noise or interference on the phone line you are using. Press dial pad keys firmly. System does not record message Make sure answering system is on (see page 41). Make sure the memory of the answering system is not full. Outgoing announcement is not clear When you record your announcement, make sure you speak in a normal tone of voice, about nine inches from the telephone base. Make sure there is no background noise (TV, music, etc.) while you are recording. 55 Appendix Maintenance Taking care of your telephone Your cordless telephone contains sophisticated electronic parts, so it must be treated with care. Avoid rough treatment. Place the handset down gently. Save the original packing materials to protect your telephone if you ever need to ship it. Avoid water Your telephone can be damaged if it gets wet. Do not use the handset out-

doors in the rain, or handle it with wet hands. Do not install the telephone base near a sink, bathtub or shower. Electrical storms Electrical storms can sometimes cause power surges harmful to electronic equipment. For your own safety, take caution when using electric appliances during storms. Cleaning your telephone Your telephone has a durable plastic casing that should retain its luster for many years. Clean it only with a soft cloth slightly dampened with water or a mild soap. Do not use excess water or cleaning solvents of any kind. Remember that electrical appliances can cause serious injury if used when you are wet or standing in water. If the telephone base should fall into water, DO NOT RETRIEVE IT UNTIL YOU UNPLUG THE POWER CORD AND TELEPHONE LINE CORDS FROM THE WALL. Then pull the unit out by the unplugged cords. 56 Appendix Important safety information This symbol is to alert you to important operating or servicing instructions that may appear in this users manual. Always follow basic safety precautions when using this product to reduce the risk of injury, fire, or electric shock. Safety information Read and understand all instructions in the users manual. ceiving equipment within range of the cordless handset. For this reason, you should not think of cordless telephone conversations as being as private as those on corded telephones. Electrical power: The telephone base of this cordless telephone must be connected to a working electrical outlet which is not controlled by a wall switch. Calls cannot be made from the handset if the telephone base is unplugged or switched off, or if the electrical power is interrupted. Potential TV interference: Some cordless telephones operate at frequen-

Two-way recording: This unit does not sound warning beeps to let the other party know that the call is being recorded.
