(a) Do Not Attempt to operate this oven with the door open since open-door operation can result in harmful exposure to microwave energy. It is important not to defeat or tamper with the safety interlocks.
(b) Do Not Place any object between the oven front face and the door or allow soil or cleaner residue to accumulate on sealing surfaces.
(c) Do Not Operate the oven if it is damaged. It is particularly important that the oven door close properly and that there is no damage to the:
(1) door (bent),
(2) hinges and latches (broken or loosened),
(3) door seals and sealing surfaces.
(d) The Oven Should Not be adjusted or repaired by anyone except properly qualified service personnel. IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS. This microwave oven is not approved or tested for marine use. Use this appliance only for its intended purpose as described in this Owners Manual. I Read and follow the specific precautions in the Precautions to Avoid Possible Exposure to Excessive Microwave Energy section above. I Do not store this appliance outdoors. Do not use this product near waterfor example, in a wet basement, near a swimming pool or near a sink. I This appliance must be grounded. Connect only to a properly grounded outlet. See the Grounding Instructions section on page 4. I Install or locate this appliance only in accordance with the provided installation instructions. I Be certain to place the front surface of the door three inches or more back from the countertop edge to avoid accidental tipping of the appliance in normal usage. I Do not mount this appliance over a sink. I Do not mount the microwave oven over or near any portion of a heating or cooking appliance. I Do not store anything directly on top of the microwave oven surface when the microwave oven is in operation. I Do not operate this appliance if it has a damaged power cord or plug, if it is not working properly, or if it has been damaged or dropped. If the power cord is damaged, it must be replaced by General Electric Service or an authorized service agent using a power cord available from General Electric. I Do not cover or block any openings on the appliance. I Use this appliance only for its intended use as described in this manual. Do not use corrosive chemicals or vapors in this appliance. This microwave oven is specifically designed to heat, dry or cook food, and is not intended for laboratory or industrial use. 2 I Keep power cord away from heated surfaces. I Do not immerse power cord or plug in water. I Do not let power cord hang over edge of table or counter. I To reduce the risk of fire in the oven cavity:
Do not overcook food. Carefully attend appliance if paper, plastic or other combustible materials are placed inside the oven while cooking. Remove wire twist-ties and metal handles from paper or plastic containers before placing them in the oven. Do not use the oven for storage purposes. Do not leave paper products, cooking utensils or food in the oven when not in use. If materials inside the oven should ignite, keep the oven door closed, turn the oven off and disconnect the power cord, or shut off power at the fuse or circuit breaker panel. If the door is opened, the fire may spread. I See door surface cleaning instructions in the Care and cleaning of the microwave oven section of this manual. I This appliance should be serviced only by qualified service personnel. Contact nearest authorized service facility for examination, repair or adjustment. I As with any appliance, close supervision is necessary when used by children. SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS WARNING!
ARCING If you see arcing, press the CLEAR/OFF pad and correct the problem. Arcing is the microwave term for sparks in the oven. Arcing is caused by:
I Metal or foil touching the side of the oven. I Foil not molded to food (upturned edges act like antennas). I Metal, such as twist-ties, poultry pins or gold-
rimmed dishes, in the microwave. I Recycled paper towels containing small metal pieces being used in the microwave. FOODS I Do not pop popcorn in your microwave oven unless in a special microwave popcorn accessory or unless you use popcorn labeled for use in microwave ovens. I Some products such as whole eggs and sealed containersfor example, closed jarswill explode and should not be heated in this microwave oven. Such use of the microwave oven could result in injury. I Do not boil eggs in a microwave oven. Pressure will build up inside egg yolk and will cause it to burst, possibly resulting in injury. I Operating the microwave with no food inside for more than a minute or two may cause damage to the oven and could start a fire. It increases the heat around the magnetron and can shorten the life of the oven. I Foods with unbroken outer skin such as potatoes, hot dogs, sausages, tomatoes, apples, chicken livers and other giblets, and egg yolks should be pierced to allow steam to escape during cooking. I SUPERHEATED WATER Microwaved water and other liquids do not always bubble when they reach the boiling point. They can actually get superheated and not bubble at all. Superheated liquid will bubble up out of the cup when it is moved or when something like a spoon or tea bag is put into it. To prevent this from happening and causing injury, do not heat any liquid for more than 2 minutes per cup. After heating, let the cup stand in the microwave for 30 seconds before moving it or putting anything into it. I Avoid heating baby food in glass jars, even with the lid off. Make sure all infant food is thoroughly cooked. Stir food to distribute the heat evenly. Be careful to prevent scalding when warming formula. The container may feel cooler than the formula really is. Always test the formula before feeding the baby. I Dont defrost frozen beverages in narrow-necked bottles (especially carbonated beverages). Even if the container is opened, pressure can build up. This can cause the container to burst, possibly resulting in injury. I Spontaneous boilingUnder certain special circumstances, liquids may start to boil during or shortly after removal from the microwave oven. To prevent burns from splashing liquid, we recommend the following: before removing the container from the oven, allow the container to stand in the oven for 30 to 40 seconds after the oven has shut off. Do not boil liquids in narrow-
necked containers such as soft drink bottles, wine flasks, and especially narrow-necked coffee cups. Even if the container is opened, excessive steam can build up and cause it to burst or overflow. I Hot foods and steam can cause burns. Be careful when opening any containers of hot food, including popcorn bags, cooking pouches and boxes. To prevent possible injury, direct steam away from hands and face. I Do not overcook potatoes. They could dehydrate and catch fire, causing damage to your oven. I Cook meat and poultry thoroughlymeat to at least an INTERNAL temperature of 160F and poultry to at least an INTERNAL temperature of 180F. Cooking to these temperatures usually protects against foodborne illness. 3 S a f e t y I n s t r u c t i o n s O p e r a t i n g I n s t r u c t i o n s T r o u b l e s h o o t i n g T i p s C o n s u m e r S u p p o r t IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION. READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE USING. I Cookware may become hot because of heat transferred from the heated food. Pot holders may be needed to handle the cookware. I Boilable cooking pouches and tightly closed plastic bags should be slit, pierced or vented as directed by package. If they are not, plastic could burst during or immediately after cooking, possibly resulting in injury. Also, plastic storage containers should be at least partially uncovered because they form a tight seal. When cooking with containers tightly covered with plastic wrap, remove covering carefully and direct steam away from hands and face. I Use foil only as directed in this guide. TV dinners may be microwaved in foil trays less than 3/4 high; remove the top foil cover and return the tray to the box. When using foil in the microwave oven, keep the foil at least 1 inch away from the sides of the oven. I Plastic cookwarePlastic cookware designed for microwave cooking is very useful, but should be used carefully. Even microwave-safe plastic may not be as tolerant of overcooking conditions as are glass or ceramic materials, and may soften or char if subjected to short periods of overcooking. In longer exposures to overcooking, the food and cookware could ignite. Follow these guidelines:
1 Use microwave-safe plastics only and use them in strict compliance with the cookware manufacturers recommendations. Do not microwave empty containers. Do not permit children to use plastic cookware without complete supervision. 2 3 WARNING!
MICROWAVE-SAFE COOKWARE Make sure all cookware used in your microwave oven is suitable for microwaving. Most glass casseroles, cooking dishes, measuring cups, custard cups, pottery or china dinnerware which does not have metallic trim or glaze with a metallic sheen can be used. Some cookware is labeled suitable for microwaving. I If you are not sure if a dish is microwave-safe, use this test: Place in the oven both the dish you are testing and a glass measuring cup filled with 1 cup of waterset the measuring cup either in or next to the dish. Microwave 3045 seconds at high. If the dish heats, it should not be used for microwaving. If the dish remains cool and only the water in the cup heats, then the dish is microwave-safe. I If you use a meat thermometer while cooking, make sure it is safe for use in microwave ovens. I Do not use recycled paper products. Recycled paper towels, napkins and waxed paper can contain metal flecks which may cause arcing or ignite. Paper products containing nylon or nylon filaments should be avoided, as they may also ignite. I Some styrofoam trays (like those that meat is packaged on) have a thin strip of metal embedded in the bottom. When microwaved, the metal can burn the floor of the oven or ignite a paper towel. I Do not use the microwave to dry newspapers. I Not all plastic wrap is suitable for use in microwave ovens. Check the package for proper use. I Paper towels, waxed paper and plastic wrap can be used to cover dishes in order to retain moisture and prevent spattering. Be sure to vent plastic wrap so steam can escape. s n o i t c u r t s n I y t e f a S s n o i t c u r t s n I g n i t a r e p O s p i T g n i t o o h s e l b u o r T t r o p p u S r e m u s n o C 4 GROUNDING INSTRUCTIONS WARNINGImproper use of the grounding plug can result in a risk of electric shock. This appliance must be grounded. In the event of an electrical short circuit, grounding reduces the risk of electric shock by providing an escape wire for the electric current. This appliance is equipped with a power cord having a grounding wire with a grounding plug. The plug must be plugged into an outlet that is properly installed and grounded. Consult a qualified electrician or service technician if the grounding instructions are not completely understood, or if doubt exists as to whether the appliance is properly grounded. If the outlet is a standard 2-prong wall outlet, it is your personal responsibility and obligation to have it replaced with a properly grounded 3-prong wall outlet. Do not under any circumstances cut or remove the third (ground) prong from the power cord. We do not recommend using an extension cord with this appliance. If the power cord is too short, have a qualified electrician or service technician install an outlet near the appliance. (See EXTENSION CORDS section.) For best operation, plug this appliance into its own electrical outlet to prevent flickering of lights, blowing of fuse or tripping of circuit breaker. Align large prongs/slots
(Adapter plugs not permitted in Canada) ADAPTER PLUGS Usage situations where appliances power cord will be disconnected infrequently. Because of potential safety hazards under certain conditions, we strongly recommend against the use of an adapter plug. However, if you still elect to use an adapter, where local codes permit, a TEMPORARY CONNECTION may be made to a properly grounded two-prong wall receptacle by the use of a UL listed adapter which is available at most local hardware stores. The larger slot in the adapter must be aligned with the larger slot in the wall receptacle to provide proper polarity in the connection of the power cord. CAUTION: Attaching the adapter ground terminal to the wall receptacle cover screw does not ground the appliance unless the cover screw is metal, and not insulated, and the wall receptacle is grounded through the house wiring. You should have the circuit checked by a qualified electrician to make sure the receptacle is properly grounded. When disconnecting the power cord from the adapter, always hold the adapter with one hand. If this is not done, the adapter ground terminal is very likely to break with repeated use. Should this happen, DO NOT USE the appliance until a proper ground has again been established. Usage situations where appliances power cord will be disconnected frequently. Do not use an adapter plug in these situations because frequent disconnection of the power cord places undue strain on the adapter and leads to eventual failure of the adapter ground terminal. You should have the two-prong wall receptacle replaced with a three-prong (grounding) receptacle by a qualified electrician before using the appliance. Ensure proper ground and firm connection before use. READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE USING. EXTENSION CORDS A short power supply cord is provided to reduce the risks resulting from becoming entangled in or tripping over a longer cord. Extension cords may be used if you are careful in using them. If an extension cord is used 1 2 3 If you use an extension cord, the interior light may flicker and the blower sound may vary when the microwave oven is on. Cooking times may be longer, too. The marked electrical rating of the extension cord should be at least as great as the electrical rating of the appliance;
The extension cord must be a grounding-type 3-wire cord and it must be plugged into a 3-slot outlet;
The extension cord should be arranged so that it will not drape over the countertop or tabletop where it can be pulled on by children or tripped over unintentionally. 8 Press AUTO DEFROST Enter Food weight About changing the power level. Rest periods (when the microwave energy cycles off) give time for the food to equalize or transfer heat to the inside of the food. An example of this is shown with power level 3the defrost cycle. If microwave energy did not cycle off, the outside of the food would cook before the inside was defrosted. Here are some examples of uses for various power levels:
High10: Fish, bacon, vegetables, boiling liquids. Med-High 7: Gentle cooking of meat and poultry; baking casseroles and reheating. Medium 5: Slow cooking and tenderizing for stews and less tender cuts of meat. Low 2 or 3: Defrosting; simmering; delicate sauces. Warm 1: Keeping food warm; softening butter. Press TIME COOK. Enter cooking time. Press POWER LEVEL. Select desired power level 110. Press START. The power level may be entered or changed immediately after entering the time for Time Cook. 1 2 3 4 5 Variable power levels add flexibility to microwave cooking. The power levels on the microwave oven can be compared to the surface units on a range. Each power level gives you microwave energy a certain percent of the time. Power level 7 is microwave energy 70% of the time. Power level 3 is energy 30% of the time. Most cooking will be done on High which gives you 100% power. power level10 will cook faster but food may need more frequent stirring, rotating or turning over. A lower setting will cook more evenly and need less stirring or rotating of the food. Some foods may have better flavor, texture or appearance if one of the lower settings is used. Use a lower power level when cooking foods that have a tendency to boil over, such as scalloped potatoes. About the time features. Arcing is caused by:
I metal or foil touching the side of the oven. I foil that is not molded to food (upturned edges act like antennas). I metal such as twist-ties, poultry pins, gold-rimmed dishes. I recycled paper towels containing small metal pieces. Covering Shielding Covers hold in moisture, allow for more even heating and reduce cooking time. Venting plastic wrap or covering with wax paper allows excess steam to escape. In a regular oven, you shield chicken breasts or baked foods to prevent over-browning. When microwaving, you use small strips of foil to shield thin parts, such as the tips of wings and legs on poultry, which would cook before larger parts. Standing Time When you cook with regular ovens, foods such as roasts or cakes are allowed to stand to finish cooking or to set. Standing time is especially important in microwave cooking. Note that a microwaved cake is not placed on a cooling rack. After covering a dish with plastic wrap, you vent the plastic wrap by turning back one corner so excess steam can escape. Venting 18 Care and cleaning of the microwave oven. Helpful Hints An occasional thorough wiping with a solution of baking soda and water keeps the inside fresh. Unplug the cord before cleaning any part of this oven. How to Clean the Inside Walls, Floor, Inside Window, Metal and Plastic Parts on the Door Some spatters can be removed with a paper towel; others may require a damp cloth. Remove greasy spatters with a sudsy cloth, then rinse with a damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or sharp utensils on oven walls. To clean the surface of the door and the surface of the oven that come together upon closing, use only mild, nonabrasive soaps or detergents using a sponge or soft cloth. Rinse with a damp cloth and dry. Never use a commercial oven cleaner on any part of your microwave oven. Removable Turntable and Turntable Support To prevent breakage, do not place the turntable into water just after cooking. Wash it carefully in warm, sudsy water or in the dishwasher. The turntable and support can be broken if dropped. Remember, do not operate the oven without the turntable and support in place. How to Clean the Outside Do not use cleaners containing ammonia or alcohol on the microwave oven. Ammonia or alcohol can damage the appearance of the microwave oven. Case Clean the outside of the microwave oven with a sudsy cloth. Rinse with a damp cloth and then dry. Wipe the window clean with a damp cloth. Control Panel and Door Wipe with a damp cloth. MEASUREMENT OF THE MICROWAVE POWER OUTPUT Microwave output power can be checked by indirectly measuring the temperature rise of a certain amount of water exposed to the microwave as directed below. PROCEDURE 1, Microwave power output measurement is made with the microwave oven supplied at rated voltage and operated at its maximum microwave power setting with a load of 1000 + Scc of potable water. 2. The water is contained in a cytindrical borosilicate glass vessel having a maximum material thickness of 3 mm and an outside diameter of approximately 190 mm. 3. The oven and the empty vessel are at ambient temperature prior to the start of the test. The initial temperature of the water is 10 + 2 C (50+ 3.6 F). It is measured immediately before the water is added to the vessel. After addition of the water to the vessel, the load is immediately placed on the center of the shelf, which is in the lowest normal position. 4, Microwave power is switched on. 5. Heating time should be exactly A seconds.
(Refer to table as following) Heating time is measured while the microwave generator is operating at full power. The filament heat-up time for magnetron is not included, 6. The initial and final temperature of water is selected so that the maximum difference between the ambient and final water temperature is 5K. 7. The microwave power output P in watts is calculated from the following formula:
P=4187 x T T is difference between initial and ending temperature. tis the heating time. The power measured should be B (Refer to SPECIFICATIONS) W + 10.0 %.
* Heating time for power output:

MICROWAVE RADIATION TEST PROCEDURE 1, Prepare Microwave Energy Survey Meter, 600cc glass beaker, and glass thermometer 100C (212F ). 2. Pour 275cc +15Scc of tap water initially at 20+ 5 C
(68 + 9F) in the 600 cc glass beaker with an inside diameter of approx. 95mm(3.5 in.). 3. Place it at the center of the tray and set it in a cavity. 4. Close the door and operate the oven. 5. Measure the leakage by using Microwave Energy Survey Meter with dual ranges, set to 2450MHz. 1) Measured radiation leakage must not exceed the value prescribed below. Leakage for a fully assembled oven with door normally closed must be less than 4m W/cm? . 2) When measuring the leakage, always use the Sem (2 in.) space cone with probe. Hold the probe perpendicular to the cabinet and door. Place the space cone of the probe on the door, cabinet, door seem, door viewing screen, the exhaust air vents and the suction air vents. 3) Measuring should be in a counter-clockwise direction at a rate of | in./sec. If the leakage of the cabinet door seem is unknown, move the probe more slowly. 4) When measuring near a comer of the door, keep the probe perpendicular to the areas making sure the probe end at the base of the cone does not get closer than 2 in. from any metal. If it does not, erroneous reading may result. 3. COMPONENT TEST PROCEDURE High voltage is present at the high voltage terminal of the high voltage transformer during any cooking cycle. It is neither necessary nor advisable to attempt measurement of the high voltage. Before touching any oven components or wiring, always unplug the oven from its power source and discharge the capacitor. 1. High voltage transformer 1) Remove connections from the transformer terminals and check continuity. 2) Normal readings should be as follows :
Secondary winding ... Approx. 110 2 +10%
Filament winding ... Approx. 0 2 Primary winding ... Approx. 1 2 2. High voltage capacitor 1) Check continuity of capacitor with meter on the highest OHM scale. 2) A normal capacitor will show continuity for a short time, and then indicate 10M22 once the capacitor charged. 3) A shorted capacitor will show continuous continuity. 4) An open capacitor will show constant 10MQ . 5) Resistance between each terminal and chassis should be infinite. 3. High voltage diode 1) Isolate the diode from the circuit by disconnecting the leads. 2) With the ohmmeter set on the highest resistance scale measure the resistance across the diode terminals. Reverse the meter leads and again observe the resistance reading. Meter with 6V, 9V or higher voltage batteries should be used to check the front-back resistance of the diode, otherwise an infinite resistance may be read in both directions. A normal diode's resistance will be infinite in one direction and several hundred k in the other direction. 4, Magnetron For complete magnetron diagnosis, refer to Measurement of the Microwave Power Output. " Continuity checks can only indicate and open filament or a shorted magnetron. To diagnose for an open filament or a shorted magnetron, 1) Isolate magnetron from the circuit by disconnecting the leads. 2) A continuity check across magnetron filament terminals should indicate 0.1 2 or less. 3) A continuity check between each filament terminal and magnetron case should read open. 5. Fuse If the fuse in the primary and monitor switch circuit is blown when the door is opened, check the primary and monitor switch before replacing the blown fuse. In case the fuse is blown by an improper switch operation, replace the defective switch and fuse at the same time. Replace just the fuse if the switches operate normally.
