.. Introduction Thank you for purchasing the Belkin Wireless A+G USB Network Adapter (the Adapter). Now you can take advantage of this great new technology and gain the freedom you need around the home or office without using cables. The Wireless USB Network Adapter works like a conventional network adapter, but without the wires. The easy installation and setup will have you networking wirelessly in minutes. Please be sure to read through this User Manual completely, and pay special attention to the section entitled Placement of your Wireless Networking Hardware for Optimal Performance on page 2. By following our simple setup instructions your Belkin Home Network will allow you to:

Typical indoor operating range for your wireless devices is between 100 and 200 feet. In the same way, your wireless connection and performance will degrade somewhat as the distance between your Wireless Router (or Access Point) and connected devices increases. This may or may not be noticeable to you. As you move further from your Wireless Router or Access Point, connection speed may decrease. Factors that can weaken signals simply by getting in the way of your networks radio waves are metal appliances or obstructions, and walls. If you have concerns about your networks performance that might be related to range or obstruction factors, try moving the computer to a position between five and ten feet from the Wireless Router, in order to see if distance is the problem. If difficulties persist even at close range, please contact Belkin Technical Support. IMPORTANT FACTORS FOR PLACEMENT AND SETUP Note: While some of the items listed below can affect network performance, they will not prohibit your wireless network from functioning; if you are concerned that your network is not operating at its maximum effectiveness, this checklist may help. 1. Placement of your Wireless Networking Hardware Place your Wireless Router (or Access Point), the central connection point of your network, as close as possible to the center of your wireless network devices. To achieve the best wireless network coverage for your wireless clients (i.e., computers enabled by Belkin Wireless Notebook Network Cards, Wireless Desktop Network Cards, and Wireless USB Adapters):
Ensure that your Wireless Router (or Access Point) networking antennas are parallel to each other, and are positioned vertically (toward the ceiling). If your Wireless Router (or Access Point) itself is positioned vertically, point the antennas as much as possible in an upward direction. Introduction In multistory homes, place the Wireless Router (or Access Point) on a floor that is as close to the center of the home as possible. This may mean placing the Router on an upper floor. Try not to place the Wireless Router (or Access Point) near a cordless 2.4GHz phone. 2. Avoid Obstacles and Interference Avoid placing your Wireless Router or Access Point near devices that may emit radio noise, such as microwave ovens. Dense objects that can inhibit Wireless communication can include:
Refrigerators Washers and/or dryers Metal cabinets Large aquariums Metallic-based UV tinted windows If your wireless signal seems weak in some spots, make sure that objects such as these are not blocking the signal s path (between your computers and Wireless Router or Access Point) 3. Cordless Phone Placement If the performance of your wireless network is impaired after attending to the above issues, and you have a cordless phone:
Try moving cordless phones away from Wireless Routers (or Access Points) and your wireless-enabled computers Unplug and remove the battery from any cordless phone that operates on the 2.4GHz band (check manufacturers information). If this fixes the problem, your phone may be interfering. If your phone supports channel selection, change the channel on the phone to the furthest channel from your wireless network, as possible. For example, change the phone to channel 1 and move your Wireless Router to channel 11. See your phones user manual for detailed instructions. If necessary, consider switching to a 900MHz cordless phone. Introduction 4. Choose the quietest channel for your wireless network In locations where homes or offices are close together, such as apartment buildings or office complexes, there may be wireless networks nearby that can conflict with yours. Use the Site Survey capabilities of your Wireless LAN Utility to locate any other wireless networks (see page 16 of this manual), and move your Wireless Router
(or Access Point) and computers to a channel as far away from other networks as possible. Experiment with more than one of the available channels, in order to find the clearest connection and avoid interference from neighboring cordless phones or other wireless devices. 5. Secure connections, VPNs, and AOL Secure connections are connections that typically require a user name and password, and are used where security is important. Secure connections include:
Virtual Private Network (VPN) connections, often used to connect remotely to an office network The Bring Your Own Access program from America Online (AOL), which lets you use AOL through broadband provided by another cable or DSL service Most on-line banking websites Many commercial websites which require a user name and password to access your account Secure connections can be interrupted by a computers power management setting, which causes it to go to sleep. The simplest solution to avoid this is to simply reconnect by re-running the VPN or AOL software, or by re-logging into the secure web site. A second alternative is to change your computers power management settings so it does not go to sleep; however, this may not be appropriate for portable computers. To change your power management setting under Windows, see the Power Options item in the Control Panel. Introduction If you continue to have difficulty with Secure Connection, VPNs and AOL please review steps 1-4 above to be sure you have addressed these issues. These guidelines should allow you to cover the maximum possible area with your Wireless Router. If it does not appear within 1520 seconds, then select your CD-ROM drive and double-click on the folder named Files. Next double-click on the icon named setup.exe. 1.3 In the menu window, drag your mouse over the Install button then select Click here to start the software installation program. 1.4 The installer will start. Click Next to continue. 1.5 Choose an installation location then click Next to accept the default location or click Browse to select a different location before clicking Next. Installing and setting up the USB Network Adapter 1.5 You will see a message twice similar to the one below during the installation process. This DOES NOT mean there is a problem. Click Continue Anyway each time the warning message is encountered.. Installing and setting up the USB Network Adapter Step 2 Connect the USB Adapter to your PC2.1 After the software installation is finished, the message You can plug in your WLAN adapter now will appear. Plug the Adapter into an available USB port on your desktop or notebook computer. Product Placement The best location for your adapter is on top of your computers monitor. Placing the Adapter on your desktop is acceptable, however, avoid placing the Adapter near metal objects such as a computer case or speakers. Any object that is metal has the ability to block the radio signals from the Adapter
. Installing and setting up the USB Network Adapter Step 3 Let Windows Finish the Installation 3.1 After connecting your Adapter, Windows will detect that new hardware has been installed. Depending on your version of Windows, a window similar to the one pictured here will appear. Select the option Install the software automatically (Recommended) and click Next. 3.2 You will see a warning message twice similar to this one. This DOES NOT mean there is a problem. Click Continue Anyway each time the warning message is encountered.. 3.3 You will see a window similar to this one. Click Finish. 3.4 Double-click on the Signal Indicator icon located in the lower right corner of your screen (in the system tray) to bring up the Wireless Network Utility Uninstalling the Software and Drivers If you need to remove the software and drivers for any reason, you can easily accomplish this in one of two ways. You can insert the software CD and click on the Uninstall option in the menu, or you can go to the Windows Control Panel and select the Add/Remove Programs option. The Belkin Wizard will walk you through the removal process. Using the Belkin Wireless LAN Monitor Utility When you launch the Wireless LAN Monitor Utility (the Utility), you will be presented with the screen below. The following small icon will also be present in your system tray. Double-clicking on the icon in the system tray will open the Wireless Monitor window. USING THE BELKIN WIRELESS MONITOR UTILITY Status Tab When the utility is on your desktop, you can control your USB adapter through the utility. The first tab you will see is the Status tab. From this tab you can see your current connection status on the screen. The example below shows that there is a connection between the computer and the Wireless Router (or Access Point) by displaying 1s and 0s between the two. The diagram below also shows there is a connection between your computer, the Wireless Router (or Access Point), and the Internet by displaying 1s and 0s between the Wireless Router (or Access Point) and the Internet. If there is no connection between the computer and Wireless Router (or Access Point), an X will be displayed. This is the same for the Internet connection. Using the Belkin Wireless LAN Monitor Utility
(a) Signal Strength Displays the signal strength of the related router (or access point).
(b) Connect to Network Displays the current network SSID, the network name of the router (or access point) you are connected to.
(c) Network Type Displays either Infrastructure if connected to a router (or access point) or Ad-Hoc when connected to another computer.
(d) Channel Displays the channel the network is on.
(e) Encryption Displays Off when encryption is disabled, WEP when either 64-bit or 128-bit is enabled, or WPA when WPA is enabled.
(f) Link Speed Displays the data rate of the current connection.
(g) More Clicking the More button lets you see detailed specifics about the network you are connected to such as DHCP Status, Current IP, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway and DNS Server IP information. Using the Belkin Wireless LAN Monitor Utility Network Available Tab Click on the Available Networks tab to display a list of all available wireless routers (and/or access points) in your area. To connect to an available network, click on the network you would like to connect to from the Available Networks list, and then click on the Connect button.
(a) Network Name The SSID of the router or access point.
(b) Signal The signal strength of the related router (or access point).
(c) Security Will display Off when encryption is disabled, WEP when either 64-bit or 128-bit is enabled, or WPA when WPA is enabled.
(d) Type Will display the network type of either Infrastructure if connected to a router (or access point) or Ad-Hoc when connected to another computer. Using the Belkin Wireless LAN Monitor Utility
(e) Band The wireless band the network is on.
(f) Channel The wireless channel the network is using.
(g) Mac Address The Mac address of the router or access point.
(h) Connect Connects to the selected network.
(i) Refresh Refreshes the status of the networks in the area. Using the Belkin Wireless LAN Monitor Utility Profile Tab: Creating a Profile Using Profiles allows you to save configurations for different wireless networks, for instance at home or at work without having to reconfigure your connection each time you connect. This allows you to quickly change from one profile to another profile without having to remember the particular settings of a certain network. Step 1. To create a new wireless network profile, click on the Profiles tab. Click Add to open the new profile screen. Type in a name for the profile. You should pick something easy to remember like Work for your work network or Home for your home network. Click Next to continue. Step 2. The next screen you will see allows you to type in the name of the network you will be connecting to, the type of network it is, and optionally, you can set the data rate for that network. After making the selections, click Next to continue.
(a) Network Name The exact name of the network you will be connecting to. The Network Name is the same as the network SSID.
(b) Network Type Select either Access Point, if it is a network with a wireless router or access point, or Peer-to-Peer if this is a direct connection to another computer.
(c) Transfer Rate Automatic is the suggested Transfer Rate unless there is a specific need to change this setting. Step 3. The next screen allows you to input security encryption settings for the network. If the network you are connecting to is not encrypted, leave the Authentication Mode in Off and click the Complete button to save the profile. If your network is encrypted, please see page __ to continue.
(3010-u10.jpg) Step 4. To begin using your new profile, highlight the profile name by clicking on the name one time, then click Connect. Using the Belkin Wireless LAN Monitor Utility Securing your Wi-Fi Network Here are a few different ways to maximize the security of your wireless network and protect your data from unwanted intrusion. This section is intended for the home, home office, and small office user. At the time of publication, three encryption methods are available. Encryption Methods:
Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) WEP is a common protocol that adds security to all Wi-Fi-compliant wireless products. WEP gives wireless networks the equivalent level of privacy protection as a comparable wired network. 64-Bit WEP 64-bit WEP was first introduced with 64-bit encryption, which includes a key length of 40 bits plus 24 additional bits of system generated data (64 bits total). Some hardware manufacturers refer to 64-bit as 40-bit encryption. Shortly after the technology was introduced, researchers found that 64-bit encryption was too easy to decode. 128-Bit Encryption As a result of 64-bit WEPs potential security weaknesses, a more secure method of 128-bit encryption was developed. 128-bit encryption includes a key length of 104 bits plus 24 additional bits of system-generated data (128 bits total). Some hardware manufacturers refer to 128-bit as 104-bit encryption. Most of the new wireless equipment in the market today supports both 64-bit WEP and 128-bit WEP encryption, but you might have older equipment that only supports 64-bit WEP. All Belkin wireless products will support both 64-bit WEP and 128-bit encryption. Using the Belkin Wireless LAN Monitor Utility Encryption Keys After selecting either the 64-bit WEP or 128-bit encryption mode, it is critical that you generate an encryption key. If the encryption key is not consistent throughout the entire wireless network, your wireless networking devices will be unable to communicate with one another. You can enter your key by typing in the hex key. A hex (hexadecimal) key is a mixture of numbers and letters from AF and 09. For 64-bit WEP, you need to enter 10 hex characters. For 128-bit WEP, you need to enter 26 hex characters. For instance:
AF 0F 4B C3 D4 = 64-bit WEP key C3 03 0F AF 0F 4B B2 C3 D4 4B C3 D4 E7 = 128-bit key Write down the hex WEP key from your wireless router or access point and enter it manually into the hex WEP key table in your adapters configuration screen. Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) WPA is a new Wi-Fi standard that improves upon the security features of WEP. To use WPA security, the drivers and software of your wireless equipment must be upgraded to support it. These updates will be found on your wireless vendors website. There are two types of WPA security: Wi-Fi Protected Access-Pre-Shared Key (WPA-PSK), typically for use in home-network configurations when not operating on a radius server; and WPA (with radius server), typically for office-network configurations. WPA-PSK (no server) uses what is known as a pre-shared key as the network key. A network key is a password that is between eight and 63 characters long. It can be a combination of letters, numbers, or characters. Each client uses the same network key to access the network. Typically, this is the mode that will be used in a home environment. WPA (with radius server) is a system in which a radius server distributes the network key to the clients automatically. This is typically found in a business environment. For a list of Belkin wireless products that support WPA, please visit our website at www.belkin.com/networking. Most wireless products ship with security turned off. So once you have your network working, you may need to activate WEP or WPA and make sure all your wireless devices are sharing the same network key. The following diagram shows the effect of not having the correct network key throughout your network. Using the Belkin Wireless LAN Monitor Utility Setting Up your Belkin Wireless Router (or Access Point) to Use Security To start using security, you need to first enable WEP or WPA for your wireless router or access point. For the Belkin Wireless Router (or Access Point) these security features can be configured by using the web-based interface. See your Wireless Router (or Access Point) User Manual for directions on how to access the management interface. Changing the Wireless Security Settings The Belkin Wireless G Router and Belkin G Range Extender/Access Point are equipped with the latest WPA security feature. They also support the legacy WEP security standard. By default, wireless security is disabled. To enable security, you will need to determine which standard you want to use. To access the security settings, click Security on the wireless section using the web-based interface. (Please see your wireless router or access point manual for directions on how to access the security settings.) Using the Belkin Wireless LAN Monitor Utility WEP Setup 64-Bit WEP Encryption 1. Select 64-bit WEP from the drop-down menu. 2. After selecting your WEP encryption mode, you can enter your key by typing in the hex key manually, or you can type in a passphrase in the Passphrase field and click Generate to create a key. A hex (hexadecimal) key is a mixture of numbers and letters from AF and 09. For 64-bit WEP, you need to enter 10 hex characters. For instance:

WARNING: If you are using a wireless client to turn on the security settings in your wireless router or access point, you will temporarily lose your wireless connection until you activate security on your wireless client. Please record the key prior to applying changes in the wireless router or access point. If you dont remember the hex key, your client will be locked out of the wireless router or access point. 128-Bit WEP Encryption 1. Select 128-bit WEP from the drop-down menu. 2. After selecting your WEP encryption mode, you can enter your key manually by typing in the hex key manually, or you can type in a passphrase in the Passphrase field and click Generate to create a key. A hex (hexadecimal) key is a mixture of numbers and letters from AF and 09. For 128-bit WEP, you need to enter 26 hex characters. For instance:

Each of the computers on your wireless network will now need to be configured with the same security settings. WARNING: If you are using a wireless client to turn on the security settings in your wireless router or access point, you will temporarily lose your wireless connection until you activate security on your wireless client. Please record the key prior to applying changes in the wireless router or access point. If you dont remember the hex key, your client will be locked out of the wireless router or access point. Using the Belkin Wireless LAN Monitor Utility WPA-PSK (no server) Choose this setting if your network does not use a radius server. WPA-PSK (no server) is typically used in home and small office networking. 1. From the Security Mode drop-down menu, select WPA-PSK (no server). 2. Enter your network key. This can be from eight to 63 characters and can be letters, numbers, or symbols. This same key must be used on all of the clients (network adapters) that you want to include in your wireless network. 3. Click Apply Changes to finish. You must now set all clients (network adapters) to match these settings. WPA (with server) Settings Choose this setting if your network uses a radius server to distribute keys to the clients (network adapters). WPA (with server) is typically used in business networks. 1. From the Security Mode drop-down menu, select WPA (with Radius Server). 2. Enter the IP address of the radius server into the Radius Server fields. 3. Enter the radius key into the Radius Key field. 4. Enter the key interval. The key interval is how often the keys are distributed (in packets). 5. Click Apply Changes to finish. IMPORTANT: You must now set all wireless network adapters/adapters to match these settings. Using the Belkin Wireless LAN Monitor Utility Configuring your Belkin Wireless Adapter to Use Security At this point, you should already have your wireless router or access point set to use WPA or WEP (see Securing your Wi-Fi Network section of this manual). In order for you to gain wireless connection, you will need to set your adapter to use the same security settings. Connecting to a Wireless Network using 64-Bit or 128-Bit WEP:
To enable the security settings for the adapter, you must select a network from the Available Networks tab or a profile from the Profiles tab and follow steps 1-4 in Profile tabs section before continuing.. Step 1. Select either Open System or Shared Key from the Authentication Mode drop-down box. Most networks with WEP use Open System key type. Using the Belkin Wireless LAN Monitor Utility Step 2. Next, depending on the WEP security settings the router (or access point) you are connecting to may be using, select 64 bits or 128 bits from the Encryption drop-down box and click Next to continue. Step 3. The next screen allows you to select the encryption key Input Method using alphanumeric, hexadecimal, or passphrase. There are several features and advantages of using the Belkin Wireless Network Utility over the Windows XP Wireless Zero Configuration Utility. We offer link status, detailed link information plus an available networks site survey, to name a few. Its essential to know which utility is managing your adapter. We recommend using the Belkin Wireless Network Utility. To use the Belkin Wireless Network Utility follow the steps below:
Step 1 Right-click on the network status icon in the system tray and select the Status tab. Step 2 From the Status tab, uncheck the Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings check box. Once the box is unchecked, click the Close button to close the window. You are now using the Belkin Wireless Network Utility to configure the adapter. Adapter does not perform or connection is unstable when computer has a second built-in wireless network adapter (such as a mini PCI or Intel Centrino) This condition occurs if your computer has a built-in wireless adapter while your Belkin Wireless adapter is also active.
