If any of the above items are missing, please contact your reseller.
System Requirements for Configuration:
A laptop or notebook computer with an available 32-bit
Cardbus slot Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows Me, or Windows 98SE At least 32 MB of memory and a 300 MHz processor An 802.11g Access Point (for optimal performance), or an 802.11b Access Point (e.g., DWL-900AP) for Infrastructure mode, or another 802.11g wireless adapter (DWL-G650) for laptops or an 802.11b wireless adapter (e.g., DWL-520 for desktops) for Ad-Hoc mode.
3 Introduction The D-Link AirPlusXtremeG DWL-G650 Wireless Cardbus Adapter is an enhanced 802.11g high-performance, wireless adapter that supports high-speed wireless networking at home, at work or in public places. TM Unlike most network cards, the DWL-G650 provides speeds of up to 54 Mbps (compared to the standard 11 Mbps) when used with other D-Link AirXtremeG products. The 802.11g standard is backwards compatible with 802.11b products. This means that you do not need to change your entire network to maintain connectivity. You may sacrifice some of 802.11gs speed when you mix 802.11b and 802.11g devices, but you will not lose the ability to communicate when you incorporate the 802.11g standard into your 802.11b network. You may choose to slowly change your network by replacing the 802.11b devices with 802.11g devices gradually. In addition to offering faster data transfer speeds when used with other 802.11g products, the DWL-G650 has the newest, strongest, most advanced security features available today. When used with other 802.11g WPA (WiFi Protected Access) and 802.1x compatible products in a network with a radius server, the security features include:
WPA: A new security feature, Wi-Fi Protected Access authorizes and identifies users based on a secret key that changes automatically at a regular interval. (By contrast, the older WEP encryption required the keys to be changed manually.) 802.1x: Authentication is a first line of defense against intrusion. In the Authentication process the server verifies the identity of the client attempting to connect to the network. Unfamiliar clients would be denied access. TKIP: Temporal Key Integrity Protocol changes the temporal key every 10,000 packets ( a packet is a kind of message transmitted over a network.) This insures much greater security than the standard WEP security. AES: Advanced Encryption Standard offers much larger key sizes. At 128, 192, or 256 bits, the AES keys are much stronger than the old WEP standard of 56 bits. It could take 149 trillion years to crack the code of an AES key, as opposed to 1 second to crack an old WEP key. For home users that will not incorporate a radius server in their network, the security for the DWL-G650, used in conjunction with other 802.11g products, will be much stronger than ever before. Utilizing the Pre Shared Key mode the DWL-G650 will obtain a new security key every time it connects to the 802.11g network. You only need to input your encryption information once in the configuration menu. No longer will you have to manually input a new WEP key frequently to ensure security, with the DWL-G650, you will automatically receive a new key every time you connect, vastly increasing the safety of your communications. 4 The DWL-G650 is compatible with existing 802.11b devices such as the D-Link Air, AirPlus and AirPro family of products including the DWL-520, DWL-520+ and the DWL-AB520 Wireless PCI Adapter, the DI-714 Wireless Router/Access Point and the DWL-120 Wireless USB Adapter. (When used with 802.11b devices, the DWL-G650 will reach speeds at up to 11Mbps.) It is an ideal way to connect one laptop computer to a Wireless Local Area Network
(WLAN.) After completing the steps outlined in the Quick Installation Guide
(included in the package) you will have the ability to share information and resources, such as files and printers, and take full advantage of a connected environment for work or play!
The DWL-G650 includes software drivers for the most popular Microsoft Windows operating systems (Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows Me, Windows 98) and can be integrated into a larger network, running, in either Ad Hoc mode (without an Access Point) or Infrastructure mode (with an Access Point.) Please take a look at our Getting Started section in this manual to see examples of typical network setups using the DWL-G650 in both Infrastructure and Ad-Hoc modes. This manual provides a quick introduction to wireless technology and its application as it relates to networking. Take a moment to read through this manual and get acquainted with wireless technology. 5 Features
Fully compatible with the 802.11g standard to provide a wireless data rate of up to 54Mbps
Backwards compatible with the 802.11b standard to provide a wireless data rate of up to 11Mbps WPA (Wi Fi Protected Access) authorizes and identifies users based on a secret key that changes automatically at a regular interval 802.1x Authentication in conjunction with the radius server verifies the identity of would be clients TKIP (Temporal Key Integrity Protocol) changes the temporal key every 10,000 packets, ensuring greater security AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) offers keys in 128, 192 or 256-bit size, which are much larger key sizes than the standard WEP key of 56 bits. Pre Shared Key mode means that the home user, without a server, will obtain a new security key every time they connect to the network, vastly improving the safety of communications on the network. use and compatible high-speed wireless connectivity within your home, business or public access wireless networks. Strictly adhering to the IEEE standard, the D-Link wireless family of products will allow you to securely access the data you want, when and where you want it. You will be able to enjoy the freedom that wireless networking delivers. A wireless local area network (WLAN) is a cellular computer network that transmits and receives data with radio signals instead of wires. Wireless LANs are used increasingly in both home and office environments, and public areas such as airports, coffee shops and universities. Innovative ways to utilize WLAN technology are helping people to work and communicate more efficiently. Increased mobility and the absence of cabling and other fixed infrastructure have proven to be beneficial for many users. Wireless users can use the same applications they use on a wired network. Wireless adapter cards used on laptop and desktop systems support the same protocols as Ethernet adapter cards. Under many circumstances, it may be desirable for mobile network devices to link to a conventional Ethernet LAN in order to use servers, printers or an Internet connection supplied through the wired LAN. A Wireless Router is a device used to provide this link. 7 Wireless Basics (continued) People use wireless LAN technology for many different purposes:
Mobility - Productivity increases when people have access to data in any location within the operating range of the WLAN. Management decisions based on real-time information can significantly improve worker efficiency. Low Implementation Costs WLANs (Wireless Local Area Networks) are easy to set up, manage, change and relocate. Networks that frequently change, both physically and logically, can benefit from WLANs ease of implementation. WLANs can operate in locations where installation of wiring may be impractical. Installation Speed and Simplicity - Installing a wireless LAN system can be fast and easy and can eliminate the need to pull cable through walls and ceilings. Network Expansion - Wireless technology allows the network to go where wires cannot. Scalability Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) can be configured in a variety of topologies to meet the needs of specific applications or existing infrastructures. Configurations are easily changed and range from peer-to-
peer networks suitable for a small number of users to larger infrastructure networks to accommodate hundreds or thousands of users, depending on the number of wireless devices deployed. The DWL-G650 is also compatible with 802.11b wireless products, which include:
2.4GHz Wireless Cardbus Adapters used with laptop computers
(D-Link Air DWL-650, D-Link AirPlus DWL-650+) 2.4GHz Wireless PCI cards used with desktop computers
(D-Link Air DWL-520, D-Link AirPlus DWL-520+) Enhanced 2.4GHz Wireless Access Point
(D-Link AirPlus DWL-900AP+) Enhanced 2.4GHz Wireless Broadband Router
(D-Link AirPlus DI-614+) 8 Wireless Basics (continued) Standards-Based Technology The DWL-G650 Wireless Cardbus Adapter utilizes the new 802.11g standard. The IEEE 802.11g standard is an extension of the 802.11b standard. It increases the data rate up to 54 Mbps within the 2.4GHz band, utilizing OFDM technology. This means that in most environments, within the specified range of this device, you will be able to transfer large files quickly or even watch a movie in MPEG format over your network without noticeable delays. This technology works by transmitting high-speed digital data over a radio wave utilizing OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) technology. OFDM works by splitting the radio signal into multiple smaller sub-signals that are then transmitted simultaneously at different frequencies to the receiver. OFDM reduces the amount of crosstalk
(interference) in signal transmissions. The D-Link DWL-G650 will automatically sense the best possible connection speed to ensure the greatest speed and range possible. 802.11g offers the most advanced network security features available today, including: WPA, 802.1x, TKIP, AES and Pre-Shared Key mode. These security features are explained in more detail in the Introduction and the Features section of this manual. The DWL-G650 is backwards compatible with 802.11b devices. This means that if you have an existing 802.11b network, the devices in that network will be compatible with 802.11g devices at speeds up to 11Mbps in the 2.4GHz range. Also based on the IEEE 802.11b standard, the DWL-G650 is interoperable with existing compatible 2.4GHz wireless technology with data transfer speeds of up to 11Mbps. 9 Wireless Basics (continued) Installation Considerations The D-Link AirExtreme DWL-G650 lets you access your network, using a wireless connection, from virtually anywhere. Keep in mind, however, that the number, thickness and location of walls, ceilings, or other objects that the wireless signals must pass through, may limit the range. Typical ranges vary depending on the types of materials and background RF (radio frequency) noise in your home or business. The key to maximizing wireless range is to follow these basic guidelines:
1. Keep the number of walls and ceilings between the DWL-G650 and other network devices to a minimum - each wall or ceiling can reduce your D-Link AirExtreme Wireless products range from 3-90 feet (1-30 meters.) Position your devices so that the number of walls or ceilings is minimized. 2. Be aware of the direct line between network devices. A wall that is 1.5 feet thick (.5 meters), at a 45-degree angle appears to be almost 3 feet (1 meter) thick. At a 2-degree angle it looks over 42 feet (14 meters) thick! Try to make sure that devices are positioned so that the signal will travel straight through a wall or ceiling for better reception. 3. Building Materials make a difference - a solid metal door or aluminum studs may have a negative effect on range. Try to position wireless devices and computers with wireless adapters so that the signal passes through drywall or open doorways and not other materials. 4. Keep your product away (at least 3-6 feet or 1-2 meters) from electrical devices or appliances that generate RF noise. 10 Getting Started There are basically two modes of networking:
Infrastructure using an Access Point, such as the DWL-900AP. Ad-Hoc directly connecting to another computer, for peer-to-
peer communication, using wireless network adapters on each computer, such as two or more DWL-G650 wireless network Cardbus adapters. On the following pages we will show you an example of an Infrastructure Network and an Ad-Hoc Network. An Infrastructure network contains an Access Point or Router. To utilize the full features of the DWL-G650 you will need to include a radius server in your network. The Infrastructure Network example shown on the following page contains the following D-Link network devices (your existing network may be comprised of other devices):
A wireless Access Point - D-Link Air 900AP A laptop computer with a wireless adapter -
D-Link AirPro DWL-G650 A desktop computer with a wireless adapter -

The computer with the DWL-G650 installed is unable to connect to the wireless network and/or the Internet.
Check that the LED indicators for the broadband modem are indicating normal activity. If not, there may be a problem with the broadband connection. Check that the LED indicators on the wireless router are functioning properly. If not, check that the AC power and Ethernet cables are firmly connected. Check that the IP Address, subnet mask, gateway, and DNS settings are correctly entered for the network In Infrastructure mode, make sure the same Service Set Identifier (SSID) is specified on the settings for the wireless clients and access points. The SSID factory default setting for the D-Link Air, AirPlus and AirPro products is default. (Double-click on the WLAN icon in the taskbar. The Link Info screen will display the SSID setting.) In Ad-Hoc mode, both wireless clients will need to have the same SSID. Please note that it might be necessary to set up one client to establish a BSS (Basic Service Set) and wait briefly before setting up other clients. This prevents several clients from trying to establish a BSS at the same time, which can result in multiple singular BSSs being established, rather than a single BSS with multiple clients associated to it. 37 Troubleshooting
Check that the Network Connection for the wireless client is configured properly. Select AP (Infrastructure) when connecting to an access point and select Ad-Hoc mode when connecting without an access point. Double-click on the WLAN icon in the taskbar > click on Configuration to change the settings for the wireless adapter. If Security is enabled, make sure that the correct encryption keys are entered on both the DWL-G650 and the access point. Double-

Read the following descriptions if you are having problems.
(The examples below are illustrated in Windows XP. If you have a different operating system, the screenshots on your computer will look similar to the following examples.) 1. Check that the drivers for the DWL-G650 are installed properly.
Go to Start >
My Computer >
Properties
Select the Hardware Tab
Click Device Manager 34 Troubleshooting
Double-click on Network Adapters Right-click on D-Link DWL-G650 Wireless Cardbus Adapter Select Properties to check that the drivers are in-
stalled properly D-Link AirPlus XtremeG DWL-G650 D-Link AirPro DWL-AB650 Wireless Cardbus Adapter
Look under Device Status to check that the device is working properly D-Link AirPlus XtremeG DWL-G650 D-Link AirPlus XtremeG DWL-G650 High-Speed 2.4GHz Wireless Cardbus Adapter TM
Click OK 35 Troubleshooting 2. I cannot connect to the access point or the wireless router.
Make sure that the SSID on the DWL-G650 Cardbus adapter is exactly the same as the SSID on the Access Point or wireless router. Move the DWL-G650 and Access Point or Wireless router into the same room and then test the wireless connection. Disable all security settings. (WEP, MAC Address Control, AES) Make sure that the Radio is not locked down to a different frequency Turn off your Access Point and the computer with the DWL-
G650. Turn on the Access Point, and then turn on the computer with the DWL-G650. Refresh the DWL-G650 Utility 3. The DWL-G650 Power and Link lights are not on.
Check to see if the DWL-G650 Cardbus adapter is firmly inserted into the Cardbus slot of your laptop computer. 4. I forgot my Encryption key.
Reset the Access Point to its factory default settings and restore the DWL-G650 Wireless Cardbus Adapter to the factory default settings.
(The default settings are listed in the Using the Configuration Utility section in this manual.)
5. The computer does not recognize the DWL-G650 Wireless Adapter. Make sure that the DWL-G650 Wireless Adapter is properly seated in the computers Cardbus slot. If Windows does not detect the hardware upon insertion of the adapter, make sure to completely remove drivers that were previously loaded. To remove the drivers, do the following:
36 Troubleshooting A. Under Tools> select Folder Options> select View
> under Hidden files and folders > select Show hidden files and folders B. Uncheck Hide extension for known file types > click on Apply C. Search for previously loaded driver files. Remove these files from the INF and SYSTEM32 (DRIVERS) folders in the Windows directory. Note: Windows XP and Windows 2000 will rename .inf files that have not received WHQL certification into oem.inf files (e.g., oem1.inf.) 6.
Double-
click on the WLAN icon in the taskbar > click Encryption. Check to see that the key selected is set to the same key as other devices on the network. 7. How can I troubleshoot distance issues using the DWL-G650.
Move the DWL-G650 and Access Point or Wireless router into the same room and then test the wireless connection. Change the channel of the Access Point. Move devices within the line of sight 38 Technical Specifications Standards
