Controllers About the VIVE controllers Use the controllers to interact with objects in the VR world. The button labels on the controllers that you received with your developer kit may vary. Please check the hardware for the matching label. Front view 1. Joystick 2. System/Menu button 3. B/Y button 4. A/X button 5. B button 6. A button For certification only Back view 1. Right bumper 2. Battery cover Inserting the batteries into the controller Make sure that the included batteries have been inserted before turning on the controllers. 1. Gently push down on the icon near the top of the battery cover, then slide and lift to remove it. 2. Insert 2 alkaline AA batteries into the compartment. Make sure that the positive and negative ends are facing the correct direction, and that the batteries are put over the thin film in the battery compartment. 3. Replace the battery cover. For certification only Removing the batteries from the controller 1. Gently push down on the icon near the top of the battery cover, then slide and lift to remove it. 2. Pull up the thin film in the battery compartment to remove the batteries. 3. Replace the battery cover. For certification only Attaching the lanyards to the controllers Using the lanyards may help prevent the controllers from accidentally being dropped; however, please do not fling or violently throw the controller as the lanyard may break. 1. Gently push down on the top of the battery cover, then slide and lift to remove it. 2. 3. Insert the lanyard loop on the corresponding hole at the bottom of the controller. Make sure that the loop is hooked around the post. After replacing the battery cover, slide the lanyard over your wrist, and then slide the lock to tighten the lanyard comfortably around your wrist. Failure to do so may c ause bodily injury , electric shock, fire, or other personal injury , property damage or ev en death. If y ou allow others to use the product, you are responsible for ensuring each user is aware of and follows all product safety and operating instructions. Ensure Y ou Are Able to Safely Use the Product Consult your doctor before using the product if y ou hav e pre-ex isting serious medic al c onditions (suc h as a heart ailment), conditions that affect your ability to safely perform phy sic al activ ities, psyc hiatric conditions (suc h as anx iety disorders or post-traumatic stress disorder), or if y ou are pregnant or elderly . Do not use the product if you are sic k, fatigued, under the influenc e of intox ic ants/drugs, or are not feeling generally well, as it may ex ac erbate your condition. Ensure the Area Around You is Safe for Use of the Product While wearing the products headset you are blind to the world around you. The image displayed in the headset will not match the real world. Always use the product in a clear and safe area. Do not rely on the products chaperone system for protection. Do not use near stairways, large windows, balconies, heat sources, or outdoors. Clear the play area of people, furniture, and other things that may be obstacles, tripping hazards, or that block you from freely moving around. For example, if a pet comes into the room while you are using the product, you likely will not be aware of the pets presence and you could trip over your pet while moving in the virtual reality environment. Do not move outside the set play area. Use outdoors is not recommended. Injuries may occur from losing balance on uneven surfaces or from tripping over or running into objects. Do not handle sharp objects, hot liquids, or other potentially hazardous items while wearing the products headset. Do not use while driving or engaging in activities that require the ability to view your surroundings. It is recommended that the product be used only while under the supervision of another person who is ready to warn of hazards that may arise while the product is being used. Examples of hazards that could arise include, but are not limited to, tangling of a cable in a manner that presents a tripping hazard, pets entering the area where the product is being used, and the user walking too close to a wall or another hazard. Be Aware of the Cable and Connections Keep in mind the loc ation of the c able and c onnections running from the headset so that you are not like ly to trip over or pull on them while mov ing around or wa lking around the play area. Move y our feet slowly and c arefully to avoid tripping, inc luding on the c able. Make sure to maintain good footing. Tripping over the c able or contacting obstac les c ould c ause injury or damage. Take Care of t he Controllers W hile using the hand c ontrollers, alway s c hec k that you hav e suffic ient ov erhead and surrounding c learanc e to allow you to fully extend y our arms outward and upwards. Hitting persons or objects may c ause injury or damage. Hold the controllers firmly and alway s use the wrist straps. If released wh ile using, the controller may c ause injury or damage to surrounding persons, pets, or objec ts. Photosensitive Seizures Like other products that produc e v isual effec ts (inc luding light flashes), the produc t may trigger epileptic seizures, seizures, fainting, or sev ere dizziness ev en in people who hav e no history of these conditions. If y ou hav e a prev ious history of epilepsy or seizures, loss of awareness, or other sy mptoms linked to an epileptic c ondition, c onsult your doctor before using the product. To reduc e the likelihood of a seizure do not use the product if you are tired or need sleep. Repetitive Stress Injuries Operate the product in a comfortable posture. Do not grip the product too tightly . Press the buttons lightly . If y ou hav e tingling, numbness, stiffness, throbbing, or other discomfort, immediately stop using the produc t and consult your doctor. Physical and Psychological Effects Content v iew ed using the produc t c an be intense, immersiv e, and appear v ery life-like and may c ause y our brain and body to react acc ordingly . C ertain types of content (e.g. v iolent, sc ary , emotional, or adrenaline-based content) could trigger increased heart rate, spikes in blood pressure, panic attac ks, anx iety, PTSD, fa inting, and other adv erse effects. If you hav e a history of negativ e phy sic al or psyc hologic al reactions to c ertain real life c ircumstanc es, avoid using the product to v iew similar c ontent. Similarly, it is important to remember that simulated objects, suc h as furniture, that may be encountered while using the product do not ex ist in the real world, and injuries may result when interacting w ith those simulated objec ts as if they were real, for ex ample, by attempting to sit down on a v irtual c hair. Radio Frequency Interference The product c an emit radio waves that c an interfere with the operation of nearby electronic dev ic es. If you hav e a c ardiac pac emaker or other implanted medic al dev ic e, do not use the product until you hav e consulted with your doc tor or the manufacturer of y our medic al dev ic e. To minimize radio frequency interferenc e, use only original manufacturer-approv ed ac c essories, or acc essories that do not c ontain any metal. Use of non-original m anufacturer-approv ed acc essories may violate your loc al radio frequency exposure guidelines and should be avoided. Avoid Overuse Prolonged, uninterrupted use of the product should be av oided. It may negativ ely impact hand-ey e coordination, balanc e, and/or c ause other negativ e effects. W hile using the product frequently and for prolonged periods of time, you may ex perienc e tiredness or soreness in your musc les, joints, or other body parts. Take regular breaks from using the product. The length and frequency of nec essary breaks may vary from person to person. Stop Using If You Experience Any Discomfort Stop using the product and consult your doctor if y ou ex perienc e any of the follow ing sy mptoms. Seizures, loss of awareness, c onv ulsions, inv oluntary mov ements, dizziness, disorientation, impaired balance, nausea, lightheadedness, drowsiness, or fatigue. Eye pain or disc omfort, ey estrain, eye twitching, or v ision abnormalities (such as altered, blurred, or double v ision). Exc essiv e sweating inc reased saliv ation, impaired sense of balanc e, impaired hand-ey e c oordination, or other sy mptoms similar to motion sickness. Use in a moving vehicle such as a car or bus may exacerbate any adverse symptoms and is not recommended. Until fully rec ov ered from these sy mptoms, do not driv e, operate mac hinery, or take part in activ ities that may hav e potentia lly serious c onsequenc es. Before resuming use of the product, make sure that it is properly c onfigured. The ty pe of content y ou were using may c ause your sy mptoms. Continuing to use suc h content may make you prone to ex perienc ing the same sy mptoms. Use by Children The product was not designed to be used by c hildren. Do not leav e the produc t w ithin the reach of young children or allow them to use or play with it. They c ould hurt themselv es or others, or could ac c identally damage the product The product may c ontain small parts with sharp edges that may c ause an injury or which could become detached and create a choking hazard for young c hildren. Consult your doc tor immediately if any parts of the product or ac c essories are swallowed. If older c hildren are permitted to use the product, then adults should monitor them c losely for any negativ e effec ts during and after their use of the product. D o not allow older c hildren to use the product if negativ e effects are observ ed. Adults should also ensure that older c hildren avoid prolonged use of the product. Not Intended for Fail-Safe Performance The product was not designed for fail-safe performanc e. You should not use the product or software in any situation in whic h a malfunc tion c ould result in foreseeable risk of injury or death to any person, or damage to property. Any suc h use is at y our own risk. Electrical safet y This produc t is intended for use when supplied w ith power from the designated batteries or power supply unit. Other usage may be dangerous and will inv alidate any approval giv en to this produc t. Safet y precautions for proper grounding installation CAUTION: Connecting to improperly grounded equipment can result in electrical damage to the product. This produc t is equipped w ith c ables for c onnecting with a desktop or laptop computer. Be sure y our c omputer is properly grounded (earthed) before c onnecting the product to the c omputer. The power supply cord of a c omputer has an equipment-grounding conduc tor and a grounding plug. The plug must be plugged into an appropriate outlet whic h is properly installed and grounded in acc ordanc e with all loc al c odes and ordinanc es. Safet y precautions for power supply unit/Batteries Use the correct external power source. A produc t should be operated only from the type of power sourc e indic ated on the electric al ratings label. If y ou are not sure of the type of power sourc e required, c onsult y our authorized serv ic e prov ider or loc al power company. For a product that operates from battery power or other sourc es, refer to the operating instructions that are inc luded with the produc t. Do not expose to liquid. This product should be operated only with the following designated power supply unit(s). Headset / Link box (Converter) AC adapter: HTC, Model TC NE30W -US, TC NE30W -EU, TC NE30W -UK, TC NE30W -AU, TC NE30W -KR, TC NE30W -IN, and TC NE30W -CN. Controllers require AA Alkaline batteries for use. Do not disassemble, pierce, crush, or attempt to modify batteries. Do not mix old and new batteries or mix different types of batteries. Do not expose to extreme temperatures or dispose of in fire or water. Keep new and used batteries out of the reach of children. If the battery compartment does not close securely, stop using the product and keep it away from children. DO NOT INGEST BATTERY. CHEMICAL BURN HAZARD. If a battery is swallowed, it can cause severe internal burns and potential perforation of esophagus and can lead to death. If you think batteries might have been swallowed or placed inside any part of the body, seek immediate medical attention. Battery in the controller is user-replaceable. CAUTION RISK OF EXPLOSION IF BATTERY IS REPLACED BY AN INCORRECT TYPE. RECYCLE OR DISPOSE OF USED BATTERIES ACCORDING TO LOCAL REGULATIONS OR AS INSTRUCTED IN THE REFERENCE GUIDE. Discontinue use if you observe any abnormal increase in temperature on the device and/or around the battery compartment. If the battery leaks:
Do not allow the leaking fluid to come in contact with skin or clothing. If already in contact, flush the affected area immediately with clean water and seek medical advice. Do not allow the leaking fluid to come in contact with eyes. If already in contact, DO NOT rub; rinse with clean water immediately and seek medical advice. Take extra prec autions to keep a leaking battery away from fire as there is a danger of ignition or ex plosion. Safety precautions for environmental conditions Keep the product away from exc essiv e moisture and extreme temperatures. Do not leav e the product in plac es such as on a w indow sill, or behind glass that is exposed to direct sunlight or strong ultrav iolet light for extended periods of time. This may damage or ov erheat the battery , or otherwise pose a risk of damage to the produc t or surrounding persons or property . The headset contains lenses whic h may foc us and intensify bright light sourc es, c ausing damage to the hardware. Do not allow the produc t to be exposed to rain or other sourc es of moisture. The produc t should be kept away from heat sourc es suc h as radiators, heat registers, stov es, or other products (inc luding amplifiers) that produc e heat. Av oid using the product after a dramatic change in temperature. W hen you mov e the product between env ironments with v ery different temperature and/or humidity ranges, condensation may form on or within the product. To av oid damaging the product, allow suffic ient time for the moisture to ev aporate before using the product. Notic e: W hen taking the product from low-temperature conditions into a warmer env ironment or from high-
temperature conditions into a c ooler env ironment, allow the product to acc limate to room temperature before turning on power. General precautions Use only accessories approved for use with the product. Do not connect with incompatible products or accessories. Protect the product. Always treat the product and its accessories with care. Do not use near a heater, fireplace, direct sunlight, air conditioning unit or other source of direct energy. Do not expose product to liquid. Do not use the product in any potentially explosive atmosphere or where flammable materials exist. Do not attempt to open, take apart or otherwise disassemble this product or its accessories. Keep product in a clean and dust-free place. Do not expose the product or its accessories to open flames or lit smoking products. Do not drop, throw or bend the product or its accessories. Do not paint or apply any coating to the product or its accessories. Store the product and its accessories at temperatures between 0C to 40C Avoid dropping the produc t headset or c ontrollers. If dropped, espec ia lly on a hard surfac e, and the user suspects damage, take it to a serv ic e c enter for inspection. Please check local regulations for disposal of electronic products Never push objects of any kind into slots or other openings in the product. Slots and openings may be provided for ventilation. These openings must not be blocked or covered. If the product becomes uncomfortably warm during use, stop and allow it to cool down before continued use to avoid discomfort, redness, or low temperature burns. If there is any itching, ec zema, swe lling, irritation of the skin, or y ou experienc e any disc omfort, please discontinue use and c onsult your phy sic ian. Faulty and damaged products/Service If user suspects damage or identifies signs of overheating, stop use and return product to a service center for inspection. If the product is exposed to liquid or excessive heat or does not operate normally when you follow the operating instruction, stop use and return product to a service center for inspection. Do not attempt to disassemble or service the product or its accessories. Only qualified personnel must service or repair the product or its accessories. Do not use a damaged product as personal injury or further damage may result. Cleaning the product Unplug the product from its power source before cleaning. Use a soft damp cloth for cleaning, but NEVER immerse the product in water or cleaning solutions. Do not use harsh chemicals, cleaning solvents, liquid cleansers or aerosols to clean the product or its accessories. Prevention of hearing loss C AUTION: Permanent hearing loss may occur if headset earphones are used at high v olume for prolonged periods of time. Turn down the volume before using headphones or other audio devices.
