Your ActiMates Interactive Teletubby from Microsoft does what any good learning partner would domakes learning fun! Interactive Teletubbies were created especially for very young children. They promote learning and stimulate thinking by using music, animations, and open-ended and creative games that have no right or wrong answers. Interactive Teletubbies encour-
age children to explore, experiment, and discover patterns on their own. 2 Ways to Use Interactive Teletubbies Your Interactive Teletubby is brought to life with Microsoft's Realmation animation technology. With Realmation, children can play with the Interactive Teletubby in two different ways:
Asastand-alone character. Your Interactive Teletubby has lots of games and tunes in store for your child, Just squeeze a hand or foot or press the tummy and watch what happens on the Teletubby screen!
With Teletubbies videos and the Teletubbies television series. The ActiMates TV Pack is an accessory for ActiMates interactive characters. With the TV Pack, your Interactive Teletubby can interact with specially encoded Teletubbies videotapes and daily PBS broadcasts of the Teletubbies television series. if you have more than one Interactive Teleiubby, they can all interact with the Teletubbies video or TV show at the same time!
The TV Pack works with all Microsoft ActiMates characters. It includes a videotape, a transmitter that plugs into your VCR, and a radio cartridge that inserts into your ActiMates character. Simply connect the transmitter, insert the radio cartridge, and you're ready to go!
Note If you already have the ActiMates TV Pack, it will work with your Interactive Teletubby. See page 4 for more information. Warning Possible entanglement or strangulation injury if strung across a crib or playpen. Do not attach across a crib or playpen.

Document No. X03-90954 Turning Your Interactive Teletubby On and Turn your Teletubby on | HAND, FOOT, or TUMMY ) To turn your interactive Teletubby on, squeeze one of the hands or feet or press the tummy. Turning your Teletubby on with a tummy press starts baby play mode, as described below. Turn your Teletubby off ( FOOT + TUMMY |
To turn your Interactive Teletubby off, squeeze one of the feet and press the tummy at the same time. Note Your Teletubby will tum off automatically after approximately thirty seconds if nobody is playing with it. Playing with Your interactive Teletubby Your Interactive Teletubby has sensors in its hands, feet, and tummy that let children choose the games and tunes the character plays. Even the youngest children can participate in the Teletubby activities. If there are no sensor squeezes offer a few seconds, new games or tunes start automatically. There are three ways children can use this Interactive Teletubby:
Play a game { HAND or FOOT) No matter which hand or foot children squeeze, the Teletubby will play games, display pictures, or play silly sounds. By squeezing the hands and feet in different orders, children can discover new patterns, create unique images, and even compose their own songs. To start a new game, squeeze one of the hands and one of the feet
(HAND + FOOT) at the same time. Hear a tune ( TUMMY }
Once the Teletubby has been turned on using a hand or foot squeeze, children can press the tummy to hear thirteen different tunes, each with a unique animation. Each tune is played with three different musical instru-
ments: the piano, clarinet, and tuba. The rhythms and patterns of the differ-
ent songs and animations stimulate young eyes and ears, and the use of different instruments teaches about similarities and differences in music. Play mode for babies Very young babies are just learning to grasp and squeeze, but they can easily press the tummy sensor. To make play fun for babies, the tummy can be used in o special play mode that runs through a set of songs and simple games by repeatedly pressing the tummy. To start this special play mode, just turn on your Teletubby with a tummy press rather than a hand or foot squeeze. A hand or foot squeeze turns off baby play mode and allows children to play games and hear tunes as described above. Installing the Batteries Your Interactive Teletubby includes four AA-size alkaline batteries. For best performance, we suggest that you change the batteries right away, using alkaline batteries. Other types of batteries will work, but they won't last as long. To insert the batteries 1 Turn your Teletubby face down and open the Velcro-secured flap to reveal the door to the battery compartment, which is the larger of the two doors. 2 Use asmall Phillips screwdriver to remove the screw that secures the door to the battery compartment. 3 Open the battery compartment door and insert the batteries. Make sure you orient the batteries with the negative (-] ends against the springs inside the battery compartment. 4 Close the battery compartment door and secure if by tightening the screw. radio-cartridge compartment battery compartment if your Teletubby doesnt turn on when you squeeze its hand or foot or press its tummy, check that all the batteries are fresh, and that all the batteries are oriented properly in the battery compartment. It may help to take the batter-
ies out and insert them again to make sure all batteries are oriented cor-
rectly. If the batteries are not inserted properly, your Teletubby will not work!
Notes About Batteries e Keep batteries out of reach of children. Don't allow your child to play with the Teletubby until the battery compartment door has been closed and secured. Dont mix old and new batteries, or batteries of different types (for example, carbon and alkaline batteries.) Always remove old, weak, or worn-out batteries promptly and dispose of them in accordance with your local ordinances. e |fabattery leaks, remove all batteries and dispose of them in accordance with your local ordinances. Before inserting new batteries, thoroughly clean the battery compartment with a damp paper towel, or follow the battery manufacturer's recommendations for cleanup. If fluid from the battery comes into contact with skin or clothes, flush with water immediately. Remove the batteries if your Teletubby is to be stored for longer than a month without being used. installing the Radio Cartridge for Use with the TV Pack Accessory Important You do not need a radio cartridge to play with your Interactive Teletubby as a stand-alone toy. The cartridge is only required if you want to use your Interactive Teletubby in combination with the ActiMates TV Pack accessory, ActiMates-compatible Teletubbies videos, and the Teletubbies television series. The ActiMates TV Pack accessory works with all Microsoft ActiMates interac-
tive characters. To use your Interactive Teletubby with the ActiMates TV Pack, you must insert a radio cartridge into your Interactive Teletubby. The radio cartridge is included with the Microsoft ActiMates TV Pack, which is sold separately. If your TV Pack did not include a radio cartridge, or if you need additional radio cartridges for other ActiMates characters, use the ActiMates Radio Cartridge order form at the back of this manual to order additional cartridges. Note The radio cartridge only needs to be installed once. After you've installed the radio cartridge into your Interactive Teletubby, you won't need to remove or replace the cartridge. To insert the radio cartridge 1 Turn your Teletubby face down and open the Velcro-secured flap to reveal the yellow door to the radio-cartridge compartment, which is the smaller of the two doors. 2 Use asmall Phillips screwdriver to remove the screw that secures the door to the radio-cartridge compartment. 3 Open the compartment door, and slide the radio cartridge into the compartment as shown in the figure below. Placement and Range Transmitter. The Transmitter communicates with the ActiMates character by means of a radio link, As with most AM/FM radios, the Transmitter is influenced by its placement and proximity to metal. The Transmitter is designed to operate at a maximum of 15 feet (4.6 meters) from the ActiMates character, but this distance can vary depending on where the Transmitter is placed. For best results, do not place the Transmitter directly on top of the VCR or TV, or in close proximity to a large metat object. If the Trans-
mitter is ptaced in such a location, the operating distance to the ActiMates character may be greatly reduced. in addition, make sure the Transmitters cables are not coiled up. The Transmitter is not getting power Make sure the AC adapter is plugged into a wail outlet and connected securety to the Transmitter. Hf the video fs playing but the tight on the Transmitter is not blinking:
e Make sure the Transmitter is property connected to the TV and VCR, and make sure the video is playing at normal speed. Make sure the video is ActiMates-compatibte. Check the video's package for the Microsoft ActiMates-compatible symbol. Hf the video is playing but the light on the Transmitter is not blinking at a steady rate:
Adjust the tracking on your VCR. If the video is playing but the ActiMates character isnt interacting with the video:
Squeeze the ActiMates characters hand to make sure its turned on. if the character says an appropriate TV phrase such as Lets watch TV together, the character is property receiving the radio signal from the Transmitter. However, if the character offers to play a game or asks you to squeeze one of its sensors, there may be an interference problem with another radio operated-device, such as a cordiess phone or baby monitor Try moving the charac-
ter closer to the Transmitter or turning off the other device while watching TV with the character. Make sure the ActiMates character nas fresh batteries installed. If the characters movements slow down, its speech becomes sturred or stuttered, or it has trouble interacting with the video, the characters batteries need to be replaced. Make sure you've installed the radio cartridge, if required. (See pages 3 and 4.) If the video is playing but you cant see the picture on the TV:
e Make sure the TV and VCR are both turned on, the TV/VCR switch is set to VCR, and the TV is tuned to the correct channet for use with your VCR. Check that the Transmitter cabte connections are secure and connected according to the instructions on pages 5 and 6. Adjust the tracking on your VCR. if the video is playing but the picture is distorted:
Adjust the tracking on your VCR. e =f the picture quatity is poor or snowy but you can hear the audio Clearty, the heads on your VCR may be dirty. Try cleaning the VCRs heads. e if the previous suggestions dont work, then either the videotape or the heads on your VCR may be worn out. If the ActiMates character stops and starts in mid-sentence while the video is playing:
* Move the character closer to the Transmitter so its in the Transmitters range. The character shoutd be within 15 feet (4.6 meters) of the Transmitter. w This is a progre checklist of tps. Check the status of the Transmitters. green light before. suggestions. Adjust the tracking on your VCR. If the tracking controt is very sensitive, then the VCR probably needs to be serviced by a qualified technician. If the characters speech is broken up or missing words:
Move the character closer to the Transmitter or a few feet to the Tight or left. Ideally, the character shoutd be less than 15 feet
{4.6 meters) from the Transmitter, and the Transmitter should be at least 1 foot (0.3 meters} from the TV and VCR. Try moving the Transmitter to a different location. For best resuits, do not place the Transmitter directly on top of the TV or VCR, or in direct proximity to a large metat object. Make sure the Transmitters cables are futly extended. If you're using a 44 MHz Cordless phone while the tape is playing, there may be interference between the phone and the Transmit-
ter. Try changing the frequency (channet} of your cordless phone. You may need to hold the phone close to its base station to change the frequency. Turn off other radio-operated devices while playing with the ActiMates character. There may be interference between the Transmitter and another radio-operated electronic device. (For example, baby monitors, garage door openers, burgtar alarms, radio-controtled toys, etc.) Certain types of apptiances with elec-
tric motors may also cause interference. if the ActiMates character isnt interacting with the PBS TV program:
Make sure your locat PBS station is ActiMates-compatible. For a list of compatible stations, see pages 7 and 8. Note that interactive Barney works only with ActiMates-compat-
ibte broadcasts of the Barney & Friends TV show, interactive Arthur and 0.W. work onty with ActiMates-compatible broadcasts of the arthur TV show, and interactive Teletubbies work only with ActiMates-compatible broadcasts of the Teletubbies TV show. Verify that the character works with the videotape inciuded in the TV Pack. For example, see if ActiMates Barney interacts with the Barney video ctip on tne TV Packs introductory videotape. Turn on your VCR while watching the PBS show with your ActiMates character. Make sure your TV/VCR switch is set to VCR and make sure your VCR is tuned to tne local PBS channet. Adjust your TV tuner and/or antenna for the best picture. if your picture is snowy, ghosted, or smeared, the ActiMates character probably won't work with the program. Verify that your VCR is set up to record TV programs, so that your VCR can act as a tuner during the PBS broadcast. To test your VCR setup, try recording the PBS show to see if your ActiMates charac-
ter works with the recording. For best results, use the SP or 2-hour recording mode on your VCR. If you cannot record the show, your VCR setup may not be correct. Refer to your VCR manual for instructions on how to set up your VCR to record pro-
grams. tf you can record the show, does the ActiMates character work when playing the show back? If so, your setup is correct and the character should also work during an actual PBS broadcast just be sure to turn on your VCR while watching the PBS show with your ActiMates character. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection against harmfut RF interference in a residential instattation. To determine if the ActiMates Character (with the Radio Cartridge installed) or the Transmitter is causing interference to other radio-operated devices

; probably caused by the Transmitter if the ActiMates Character or the Transmitter causes interference to other radio-operated devices in your home, try the fottowing measures to correct the situation:
Move the other radio-operated device to another part of the room, away from the ActiMates Character and the Transmitter, or move the ActiMates Character to a different part of the room. Move the Transmitter to a different location. For example, put the TV Pack Transmitter on the floor or on a stereo cabinet. For maximum range, the Transmitter should be at least one foot (0.3 meters) away from your television, VCR, or any targe metat object. Plug the TV Pack Transmitter into a different power outlet so that the Transmitter is on a different circuit than the radio-operated device with which it is interfering.
