Health and Safety 8 R150_.book Page 9 Thursday, May 26, 2016 4:37 PM Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) Certification Information Your wireless device is a radio transmitter and receiver. It is designed and manufactured not to exceed the exposure limits for Radio Frequency (RF) energy set by the Federal Communications Commission
(FCC) of the U.S. Government. These FCC RF exposure limits are derived from the recommendations of two expert organizations: the National Council on Radiation 9 R150_.book Page 10 Thursday, May 26, 2016 4:37 PM Protection and Measurement
(NCRP) and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). In both cases, the recommendations were developed by scientific and engineering experts drawn from industry, government, and academia after extensive reviews of the scientific literature related to the biological effects of RF energy. The RF exposure limit set by the FCC for wireless mobile devices employs a unit of measurement known as the Specific Absorption Rate (SAR). The SAR is a measure of the Health and Safety 10 R150_.book Page 11 Thursday, May 26, 2016 4:37 PM rate of absorption of RF energy by the human body expressed in units of watts per kilogram
(W/kg). For this device, the FCC safety limit for extremity SAR is 4.0 W/kg
(10g) and head SAR is 1.6 W/
kg (1g). 11 R150_.book Page 12 Thursday, May 26, 2016 4:37 PM The FCC SAR limit incorporates a substantial margin of safety to give additional protection to the public and to account for any variations in measurements. SAR tests are conducted using standard operating positions accepted by the FCC with the device transmitting at its highest certified power level in all tested frequency bands. Health and Safety 12 R150_.book Page 13 Thursday, May 26, 2016 4:37 PM In general, the closer you are to a wireless base station antenna, the lower the power output of the device. Before a new model device is available for sale to the public, it must be tested and certified 13 R150_.book Page 14 Thursday, May 26, 2016 4:37 PM to the FCC that it does not exceed the SAR limit established by the FCC. Tests for each model device are performed in positions and locations (e.g. at the ear and worn on the body) as required by the FCC. Use of other accessories may not ensure compliance with FCC RF exposure guidelines. The FCC has granted an Equipment Authorization for this mobile device with all reported SAR levels evaluated as in compliance with the FCC RF exposure guidelines. This device has the following Health and Safety 14 R150_.book Page 15 Thursday, May 26, 2016 4:37 PM FCC ID numbers: A3LSMR140R
(for the Right ear) and A3LSMR140L (for the Left ear)
[Model Number: SM-R140] and the specific SAR levels for this device can be found at the following FCC website:
www.fcc.gov/oet/ea/. The SAR information for this device can also be found on Samsungs website:

Some devices, especially those that are not tested or approved by the Bluetooth SIG, may not be compatible with your device. Responsible Listening Caution! Avoid potential hearing loss. Damage to hearing occurs when a person is exposed to loud sounds over time. The risk of hearing loss increases as sound is played louder and for longer durations. 47 R150_.book Page 48 Thursday, May 26, 2016 4:37 PM Prolonged exposure to loud sounds (including music) is the most common cause of preventable hearing loss. Some scientific research suggests that using portable audio devices, such as portable music players and cell phones, at high volume settings for long durations may lead to permanent noise-induced hearing loss. This includes the use of headphones (including headsets, earbuds, and Bluetooth or other wireless devices). Health and Safety 48 R150_.book Page 49 Thursday, May 26, 2016 4:37 PM Exposure to very loud sound has also been associated in some studies with tinnitus (a ringing in the ear), hypersensitivity to sound, and distorted hearing. Individual susceptibility to noise-induced hearing loss and potential hearing problem varies. Additionally, the amount of sound produced by a portable audio device varies depending on the nature of the sound, the device settings, and the headphones that are used. As a result, there is no single volume setting that is 49 R150_.book Page 50 Thursday, May 26, 2016 4:37 PM appropriate for everyone or for every combination of sound, settings, and equipment. You should follow some common sense recommendations when using any portable audio device:
Always turn the volume down before connecting to an audio source.
Set the volume in a quiet environment and select the lowest volume at which you can hear adequately. Health and Safety 50 R150_.book Page 51 Thursday, May 26, 2016 4:37 PM
Be aware that you can adapt to higher volume settings over time, not realizing that the higher volume may be harmful to your hearing.
When using headphones, turn the volume down if you cannot hear the people speaking near you or if the person sitting next to you can hear what you are listening to. 51 R150_.book Page 52 Thursday, May 26, 2016 4:37 PM
Do not turn the volume up to block out noisy surroundings. If you choose to listen to your portable device in a noisy environment, use noise-cancelling headphones to block out background environmental noise. By blocking background environment noise, noise cancelling headphones should allow you to hear the music at lower volumes than when using earbuds. Health and Safety 52 R150_.book Page 53 Thursday, May 26, 2016 4:37 PM
Limit the amount of time you listen. As the volume increases, less time is required before you hearing could be affected.
Avoid using headphones after exposure to extremely loud noises, such as rock concerts, that might cause temporary hearing loss. Temporary hearing loss might cause unsafe volumes to sound normal. 53 R150_.book Page 54 Thursday, May 26, 2016 4:37 PM
Do not listen at any volume that causes you discomfort. If you experience ringing in your ears, hear muffled speech, or experience any temporary hearing difficulty after listening to your portable audio device, discontinue use and consult your doctor. Do not put the earbuds in your ears without wingtips. Doing so may hurt your ears. Do not pull the wingtip excessively. The wingtip may tear. Do not put the wingtips on the earbuds in the wrong direction. The earbuds will not fit in your ears properly. 4 Follow the same procedure for the opposite earbud. 9 Basics Battery Charging the battery Fully charge the battery before using the earbuds for the first time or when they have been unused for extended periods. The earbuds will power on while charging. When the battery is completely discharged, it needs at least 10 minutes to turn on. The charging case, which has a built-in battery, is charged along with the earbuds. You can charge the earbuds by placing them into the charging case without connecting it to an electric socket. Use only Samsung-approved chargers, batteries, and cables. Unapproved chargers or cables can cause the battery to explode or damage the earbuds. Chargers are sold separately. You cannot use your earbuds wireless features while charging the battery. When there is sweat or liquid on the charging terminal or earbuds, clean them before charging the battery. 1 Push the cover open button to open the charging case cover. 2 Check the direction of each earbud and insert them into the corresponding slots. L R 10 Basics 3 Close the charging case. 4 Connect the USB cable to the USB power adaptor, and then plug the USB cable into the multipurpose jack of the charging case. Connecting the charger improperly may cause serious damage to the charging case. Any damage caused by misuse is not covered by the warranty. 5 Plug the USB power adaptor into an electric socket. The batteries of the earbuds and the charging case are charged simultaneously. 6 After fully charging, disconnect the charging case from the charger. First unplug the charger from the charging case, and then unplug it from the electric socket. If you do not use the earbuds for an extended period, turn off the earbuds. Refer to Turning off and restarting the earbuds for more information. To save energy, unplug the charger when not in use. The charger does not have a power switch, so you must unplug the charger from the electric socket when not in use to avoid wasting power. The charger should remain close to the electric socket and be easily accessible while charging. 11 Basics Reducing the battery consumption Your earbuds provide two options that help you conserve battery power. When you are not using the earbuds, store them in the charging case. The touch-sensitive sensor will continue to work while wearing the earbuds and reduce the usage time. After connecting the earbuds to your mobile device, launch the Samsung Gear app and tap SETTINGS Notifications, and then tap the ON switch to deactivate it. You can reduce the battery consumption by disabling voice notifications. Battery charging tips and precautions If there is sweat or liquid on the charging contacts, corrosion may occur on the contacts. When there is sweat or liquid on the charging terminal or earbuds, clean them before charging the battery. Using a power source other than the charger, such as a computer, may result in a slower charging speed due to a lower electric current. While charging, the earbuds and the charging case may heat up. This is normal and should not affect the earbuds lifespan or performance. If the battery gets hotter than usual, the charger may stop charging. If the earbuds and charging case are not charging properly, take them with the charger to a Samsung Service Centre. Avoid bending the charger. Doing so may damage or reduce the lifespan of the charger. Never use a damaged charger. For more information about the battery, such as the usage time, refer to the Samsung website (www.samsung.com). 12 Basics Checking the battery level Checking via voice guide When the battery level drops below 10 %, a voice guide will inform you of the battery level.
