This guide provides information about using the tablet and accessories. NOTE: Screens and windows pictured in this guide are samples and can differ from actual screens. L10ax used in this guide refers to all configurations, except where noted.There are two form factors in the L10ax platform. Each is different from the other two. XPAD is distinguished by its integrated hard handle. The handle has space for an integrated barcode reader option, two programmable buttons and a front facing speaker. XSLATE has no handle but is otherwise like the XPAD. Zebra products that are Energy Star qualified help you save money while improving the quality of the environment. 1. Touch the Start icon. 2. Select Settings > System > About. Device Specifications - Displays the device model number followed by the software release date and serial number. Most of these features are on the XPAD tablet in the same place, except for the handle of the XPAD tablet. The battery powers the tablet when it is not plugged in or docked. Preparing the Tablet for First Use To start using the tablet for the first time, insert the battery and charge the tablet.If your tablet is enabled with Wireless Wide Area Networking (WWAN), insert an activated SIM card in the SIM card holder or use an eSIM to access the cellular data network. Inserting a SIM Card A WWAN-enabled L10ax tablet supports a SIM card and an eSIM. Switching between SIMs is done within Windows. Most people need only one SIM. Before you can connect to a mobile broadband network, you must have an active account with a cellular network provider. You can use a SIM card and enable an eSIM on your tablet for mobile broadband access. The SIM card holder accommodates a Nano SIM (4FF) card, for use with the mobile broadband option.This SIM card works like the SIM card in your cell phone that connects you to a network provider. Contact your cellular network provider toadd a mobile data planto an eSIM. 1. Turn off the tablet. 2. Remove the battery if it is in the tablet. 18 Draft 3 Getting Started 3. Gently slidea SIM cardinto the SIM card slot (1).Make sure that the SIM contact (gold) is facing down and the notched corner is on the left side as shown in the graphic inside the battery bay of the tablet. 4. Install the battery. Powering On the Tablet After installing the battery, connect the tablet to external power and power up the tablet. If you have not yet inserted the battery, remove it from the packaging. 19 Draft 3 Getting Started 1. On the back of the tablet, make sure thebattery latch is slid to left and shows the red circle. Insert the bottom of the battery into the bay. Tilt the tray and press it down until it clicks securely into place. 2. The external power has two parts: the part that plugs into the power source and the adapter with a cord that plugs into your tablet. Join the two parts by plugging the power cord into the adapter to form one long cord. 3. To connect external power to the tablet, open the port door to expose the Power Adapter Port (1). Plug the AC adapter into this port on your tablet. 4. Plug the power cord into an outlet. The battery charging indicatorindicates the charge status. State Indication Blinking green The battery is charging. Solid green The batterycharging is complete. Red The charging temperature is too high. 20 Draft 3 Getting Started 5. Press and release Power (1) in the center of the right side of the tablet to turn it on. 6. Keep the tablet on AC power until the battery is fully charged. However, you dont have to wait until the tablet is fully charged to turn it on. The L10ax charges while you use it. Pens for the Tablets All L10ax tablets support touch input with your finger. In addition, a pen or stylus is provided with your tablet, and is compatible with the screen configuration that you order. Many people use a pen for more convenience or precision. The pen is particularly effective for precise data entry and navigation The XSLATE tablet comes with short pens that fit into the pen holder on these devices. The XPAD tablet includes a longer, thicker pen. If you want a longer pen for the tablet, a handle accessory can be ordered with the longer pen. Capacitive Pens Capacitive pens work with the tablets touchscreen and are sometimes called passive pens. The short capacitive pen does not need a battery. The long capacitive pen uses a AAAA battery. These two pens do not require a pen digitizer in the tablet. Figure 1Short Capacitive Pen Active Digitizer Pens If the tablet is ordered with an active Wacom digitizer built in to the screen, you will receive one of the two pens pictured below. These Wacom-compatible pens allow for a large range of pressure sensitivity, tilt detection, and hover capability. Hover lets you see where the pen is pointing before the tip touches the display. These pens are frequently called active pens. These active pens use all three modes of the touch screen:

The pen comes with a tether so that you can attach it to your tablet to avoid misplacing it. 1. Slip one end of the tether through the hole at the end of the pen, and pull the pen through the loop until 2. Slip the other end of the tether through the attach point on the tablet, then pull the pen through the it is tight. loop until it is tight. Connecting the Tablet to an External Monitor There is no dedicated port for an external monitor on the tablet. The tablet has a USB Type-C connector which includes a Display Port output capability. You need a dongle that supports USB Type-C DisplayPort and converts it to the port necessary to attach the external monitor, which can have one or more of the following ports: HDMI, DVI, DisplayPort, or VGA. For instance, to connect a monitor with an HDMI port to your tablet, you need a USB Type-C DisplayPort to HDMI output dongle. NOTE: Some dongles use USB to Video conversion and these use software to enable the external display over USB interface. Care must be taken to ensure the USB Type-C dongle specifically supports USB Type-C Display Port input. Look for a dongle that states it is plug-n-play and that no software or drivers are required. Back of Battery Charge Indicators You can check the charge of a battery when it is out of the tablet by pressing the battery check button on the rear. IMPORTANT: If you remove the battery while the tablet is running, you only have one minute to replace it to keep the tablet running. If you need to remove it for a longer period, be sure to save your files. Then, shut down or plug into a power source. If you have a battery out of the tablet, you can check the charge by looking at the rear and pressing the button to the left of the lights to view the charge level. 22 Draft 3 Getting Started Figure 5Battery Check Button 1 2 Battery charge indicators Battery check button The five lights on the back of the battery indicate the current level of chargefrom one light (20% charged) to five lights (100% charged). Removing and Replacing the Battery Before removing the battery, save your files and power off the tablet, or plug in the AC adapter and continue working while the battery charges. However, if you are hot swapping the battery, you can do so while the tablet is on and running only on battery power. Removing the Battery 1. Save files and shut down the tablet. 2. With the back of the tablet facing you, slide the battery latch (1) to the left until the latch stays open and the battery pops out slightly. A red is displayed instead of a green dot. 23 Draft 3 Getting Started 3. Insert your finger under the pull-out battery tab (2) and pull to remove the battery from the battery compartment. Replacing the Battery Replacea depleted battery witha fully charged batteryif you do not want to charge the tablet. 1. Place the tabbed end of the battery into the battery compartment. 2. Press the battery down until it snaps into place. Hot Swapping the Battery Replacing a battery while the tablet is on is called hot swapping. You can hot swap a battery only if you have a second, charged battery to replace it with. IMPORTANT: You have approximately one minute to hot swap the battery. If you have not replaced the battery within one minute, the tablet goes into Sleep mode. 1. Remove the battery. 2. Insert the new battery. 24 Draft 3 Getting Started While hot swapping the battery, notice the following behaviors:

The tablet display gets dimmer. When the charged battery is in the tablet, the display brightens again. The battery status LED turns blue when the system is on and no main battery is present. When you put a charged battery in the tablet, the LED lights turn green again. The power button is disabled. (The power button is disabled at any time the tablet has no battery and is not running on AC power through the power adapter.) 25 Draft 3 Using the Device Using the Device Start Screen This section explains how to use the device. By default, the Start screen displays in Desktop mode. Touch the on-screen shutter button to take a photo or record a video. Fingerprint Reader You can use the fingerprint reader to log on to the tablet by reading your fingerprint instead of entering a password. This feature provides an additional level of security for the tablet. These instructions assume that you have a password for logging into your tablet. Setting Up a PIN Set a PINto protect access to data on the device. IMPORTANT: To use the fingerprint reader, you need to set up a PIN. If you already have a PIN, then you can skip these steps and go to Setting Up the Fingerprint Reader on page 35 1. Touch the Windows Start icon and touch the Settings icon above it. The Settings window appears. 2. Touch the Accounts icon. 3. In the left pane, touch Sign-in options. 5. Enter your PIN and touch OK. Now you can set up the fingerprint reader. 4. In the right pane of the Sign-in options, under Windows Hello PIN, touch Add. 34 Draft 3 Using the Device Setting Up the Fingerprint Reader Set thefingerprint to protect access to data on the device. After you have a PIN, the Windows Hello section of the Sign-in Options is enabled and you can set up your fingerprint. Touch the Windows Start icon and touch the Settings icon above it. In the right pane of the Sign-in options, under Windows Hello Fingerprint, touch Set up. The Settings window appears. Touch the Accounts icon. In the left pane, touch Sign-in options. A welcome window appears. Touch Get started. Enter your PIN. 7. Decide which finger to use. The setup asks you to place your finger on the fingerprint reader a few times for it to map your finger. It prompts you to touch the sensor multiple times and from different angles. Follow the instructions as you are registering your fingerprint. 10. When successful, touch Close. Next time you log in, you can use your PIN or you can use your finger on the fingerprint reader. NOTE: You can register more than one finger to use with this reader. Keep in mind which fingers you have established with the reader and use only those fingers. Logging In with Your Fingerprint When you start the tablet or wake it up from sleep mode, put your finger on the fingerprint scanner and press it for a brief time. It either recognizes your print and opens up Windows or it asks you to try again. Fingerprint Reader Tips Be sure to press your finger to the scanner in the same way each time. Be consistent. Press the finger to the scanner and hold it there for a moment and scan at the same angle each time. For example, if you register your finger with your hand open, hold your hand the same way each time you scan. Read the prompts carefully and ensure that you wait for the prompt before you swipe. When scanning, press hard enough to fully contact the sensor. Wipe dirt or debris off your finger before scanning it so nothing interferes with the scan. Rub your fingers together to stimulate the natural skin oils so your fingerprint is easier to detect. If you are having trouble registering a specific finger, try to register a different finger. If you are repeatedly having trouble getting a good scan, you might need to clean the sensor. See Cleaning Fingerprint Reader. 35 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 8. 9. Draft 3 Using the Device Windows Hello Face Setting Up Windows Hello Face You can use the front camera to log on to your tablet using Windows Hello Face Authentication instead of entering a passwo Set Windows Hello Face to protect access to data on the device. If your face is not recognized, the Sign-in screen displays. Log in with your PIN or touch Sign-in options for more options. 36 Draft 3 Software Software Initial Windows Setup Factory Reset This chapter provides instructions on initial setup, how to reset the tablet, and how to reinstall Windows. After performing a factory reset or updating the tablet firmware or operating system, the Windows setup process begins. The welcome screen appears and then a series of windows prompt you for information regarding your preferences including Keyboard Layout, Network Setup, Account Name, Security, and Privacy. Next, a short configuration process occurs after which the Windows home screen displays. Any apps that you installed from the Windows Store prior to reset, are automatically reinstalled using your mobile broadband or Wi-Fi internet connection when connected; apps installed from other sources are not. After the process is complete a list of apps removed during reset is created on the desktop. Performing factory resetrestores Windows to original factory settings. 1. Connect the tablet to a power source. 2. Touch Settings > Update and security > Recovery 3. Under Reset this PC, touch Get started. 4. In the Reset this PC window, choose an option. Touch Keep my files to remove all apps and settings but keep all personal files. Touch Remove everything to remove all personal files, apps, and settings. CAUTION: Removing everything erases all data, including your account configuration, applications, music, pictures and files. Make sure that you back up all the required data before you proceed. 5. Touch Next until the reset process begins. The process can take an hour or longer. 6. When the reset is complete the Windows setup process begins. 37 Draft 3 Software Windows Reinstallation You can installWindows operating system on the tablet using a USB flash drive with installation files. Creating an Installation USB Flash Drive Create an installation USB flash drivebefore starting the installation of a new system on the tablet. Before you begin, request software for your tablet by visiting Zebra Support and Downloads at zebra.com/

support and download the software to a host computer. NOTE: Make sure the entire file downloads completely. Partial downloads may corrupt the device. 1. Insert a 16 GB or larger USB flash drive into a host computer. 38 Draft 3 Software 2. From Windows Explorer right-click on the USB flash drive and select Format. CAUTION: Only FAT32 format is recognized by the system BIOS. 3. In the File system drop down menu, select FAT32. 4. In the Volume label text box, enter BOOTME 5. Click Start. A warning appears; click OK to proceed. 6. Click OK when the format is complete and confirmation dialogs appear. 7. Using Windows Explorer, extract the software file you downloaded into a folder. 39 Draft 3 Software 8. Copy the entire contents of the folder to the formatted flash drive. 9. Ensure that all the files are copied successfully and then safely unmount the USB drive. Reinstalling Windows Use a USB flash drivewith the Windows OS installation files to begin the installation. Before you begin, connect a standard USB keyboard to the tablet. A physical keyboard is required to complete the setup. 1. Connect the tablet to a power source. 2. Plug the bootable USB flash drive into the tablet USB port. 3. Plug the bootable USB flash drive into the tablet USB port. 4. Re-boot the device. 6. Select USB. 5. When the Zebra loading screen appears, select BBS from the top right corner. The tablet boots to WinPE and installs the operating system and BIOS updates. Installation takes approximately 9 minutes. 7. When complete, press Alt + F4 on the keyboard. The device reboots and the Windows setup process initiates. See Initial Windows Setup on page 37. 8. After Windows setup is complete, in the taskbar, touch More settings, then touch More settings icon in the taskbar, then touch Eject (drive name). After the Safe To Remove Hardware message appears, remove the flash drive from the tablet. Check Versions You may check the versions for BIOS and operating system. Checking BIOS Version To check the current version of the BIOS:

1. In the search field, type cmd, then touch Command Prompt Desktop App to open. 2. In the Command window, type msinfo32. 3. Press Enter key. The System Information window appears. The BIOS version displays in the BIOS Version/Date field. Checking Operating System Version To check the current operating system version, see Determining Software Versions on page 10. 40 Draft 3 Software Enter the BIOS Enter the BIOS to make system changes such as managing your hardware and changing the boot sequence. The solution uses the advanced camera technology to take a digital picture of a barcode, and executes state-of-the-art software decoding algorithms to extract the data from the image. 43 Draft 3 Data Capture Scanning Considerations Typically, scanning is a simple matter of aim, scan, and decode, with a few quick trial efforts to master it. However, consider the following to optimize scanning performance:

Range Scanners decode best over a particular working range minimum and maximum distances from the barcode. This range varies according to barcode density and scanning device optics. Scan within range for quick and constant decodes; scanning too close or too far away prevents decodes. Move the scanner closer and further away to find the right working range for the barcodes being scanned. AngleScanning angle is important for quick decodes. When the illumination/flash reflects directly back into the imager, the specular reflection can blind/saturate the imager. To avoid this, scan the barcode so that the beam does not bounce directly back. Do not scan at too sharp an angle; the scanner needs to collect scattered reflections from the scan to make a successful decode. Practice quickly shows what tolerances to work within. Hold the device farther away for larger symbols. Move the device closer for symbols with bars that are close together. NOTE: Scanning procedures depend on the app and device configuration. An app may use different scanning procedures from the one listed above. Scanning with the Integrated Barcode Scanner (XPAD Only) Use theBarcode Scanner to capture barcode data. The optional XPAD L10ax scanner is a factory-installed device consisting of a barcode optical image reader and hardware decoder. TheSE4107scanner is built in to the handle of theXPAD L10axtablet. A micro SIM card is required to connect to a mobile network. NOTE: WWAN is available for select configuration only. Connecting to a Cellular Data Network Use WWANs to access data over a cellular network. Ensure that an activated SIM card is installed. 1. In the taskbar, touch the Network icon. 2. Touch the Cellular option to turn on the WAN radio if required. 3. Touch the Cellular network in the list. 4. Touch Connect automatically to automatically connect to the cellular data network when it is available. Clear the check box to manually connect each time you want to use the cellular data connection. 5. Touch Allow roaming to allow the cellular data connection to stay on when outside of the mobile operators network. Leaving the check box cleared can help prevent data roaming charges. 6. Touch Connect. The name of the mobile operator appears next to the Cellular network icon. 7. If prompted, type your user name and password and the access point name (APN). NOTE: If the Cellular quick action is turned off, select it to turn it on. Usually, the Internet APN is set automatically. If your cellular data connection is not working, try entering a new Internet APN based on the mobile operator. (ISM) band (802.15.1). Bluetooth wireless technology is specifically designed for short-range (100 meters

(328 feet)) communication and low power consumption. Devices with Bluetooth capabilities can exchange information (such as files, appointments, and tasks) with other Bluetooth enabled devices such as printers, access points, and other mobile devices. Adaptive Frequency Hopping Adaptive Frequency Hopping (AFH) is a method of avoiding fixed frequency interferers, and can be used with Bluetooth voice. All devices in the Bluetooth network (piconet) must be AFH-capable in order for AFH to work. There is no AFH when connecting and discovering devices. Avoid making Bluetooth connections and discoveries during critical 802.11b and other 2.4G WLAN communications. 63 Draft 3 Wireless AFH for Bluetooth consists of four main sections:

Channel Classification - A method of detecting an interference on a channel-by-channel basis, or pre-

defined channel mask. Link Management - Coordinates and distributes the AFH information to the rest of the Bluetooth network. Hop Sequence Modification - Avoids interference by selectively reducing the number of hopping channels. Channel Maintenance - A method for periodically re-evaluating the channels. When AFH is enabled, the Bluetooth radio hops around (instead of through) the 802.11b and other 2.4G WLAN high-rate channels. AFH coexistence allows Enterprise devices to operate in any infrastructure. The Bluetooth radio in this device operates as a Class 1 device power class. The maximum output power is 9mW and the expected range is 100 meters (328 feet). A definition of ranges based on power class is difficult to obtain due to power and device differences, and whether one measures open space or closed office space. NOTE: Use of Bluetooth wireless technology is not recommended when high rate 802.11b operation using 2.4G channel is required. The current Bluetooth specification defines security at the link level. Application-level security is not specified. This allows application developers to define security mechanisms tailored to their specific need. Link-level security occurs between devices, not users, while application-level security can be implemented on a per-user basis. The Bluetooth specification defines security algorithms and procedures required to authenticate devices, and if needed, encrypt the data flowing on the link between the devices. Device authentication is a mandatory feature of Bluetooth while link encryption is optional. Pairing of Bluetooth devices is accomplished by creating an initialization key used to authenticate the devices and create a link key for them. Entering a common personal identification number (PIN) in the devices being paired generates the initialization key. The PIN is never sent over the air. By default, the Bluetooth stack responds with no key when a key is requested (it is up to user to respond to the key request event). Authentication of Bluetooth devices is based-upon a challenge-response transaction. Bluetooth allows for a PIN or passkey used to create other 128-bit keys used for security and encryption. The encryption key is derived from the link key used to authenticate the pairing devices. Also worthy of note is the limited range and fast frequency hopping of the Bluetooth radios that makes long-distance eavesdropping difficult. Recommendations are:
